We're rendering the house using a product called Licata, instead of K-Rend - be sure to check out the rest of the series to see how it comes out.

@0:35 "Whey do they pre-mix this and then the bags of base coat come as dry powder" Silicone top coat comes pre-mixed because the key ingredient is a water-based paint. It works the same way as PVA wood glue - it stays liquid as long as it's got enough water mixed into it, and only when the water evaporates out of it, it forms a plastic (the ingredients chemically react from identical small molecules called monomers into giant long chain molecules of flexible polymers) - in silicon (and acrylic) stop coats the water STOPS the polymerisation happening so as long as there's enough water in it, it'll never harden. Silicone top coat is a thick water based emulsion masonry paint, with sand mixed into it. Apply it on a really damp foggy day, and it won't harden. The powder base-coat works on a completely different reaction - some of the powder is "Ordinary Portland Cement" (OPC) it works the same as concrete and cement mortars work - some of the water that you mix into it chemically reacts with cement in the mix, and as it says on wikipedia: "Cement sets when mixed with water by way of a complex series of chemical reactions still only partly understood.[citation needed] The different constituents slowly crystallise, and the interlocking of their crystals gives cement its strength." - just like concrete it turns into artificial limestone. That's why you've got to keep the base coat powder dry, and you only have a few hours once you've mixed it with water before it starts to harden. Once it's on the wall, you should keep it damp for as long as possible (a few days at least) to get it to maximum hardness - if it dries to quickly then too much of the water evaporates before it chemically reacts and it can end up weak and powdery. In hot weather keep it shaded, or carefully put a damp dust sheet on top of it. Top coat is completely the other way around, you keep it wet to stop it "going off". Both can get knackered by freezing before they've dried out - the ice crystals are bigger than the water they form from, and they'll destroy either coat by pushing it apart from inside, making them really weak.

Hi OBB. I’ve recommended you videos to so many people I think they are great. Just a few questions on the rendering series I hope you don’t mind and perhaps others will chip in. Giving you put insulation over the render carrier board could you have used ply then you could put some mechanical fixings in the insulation? You’ve been open on the past with cost but please ignore if I’m over stepping. What do you think the difference in cost and benefits is between this method and rendered block work as a second skin? Looks mint btw.

Hi there, great content btw. My builder has gone for Licata silicon top coat rather than the k-rend brand. I'm confused now as I always thought k-rend is one of the best brands out there. Btw it's a black colour and I'm a bit sceptical in terms of the quality of Licata. Just wanted to see If you have had any experience the Licata and whether you would recommended it ? thanks

We're delighted with it, it's really flat and solid looking (not blinding brilliant white), and it's incredibly consistent in colour. There are occasionally bits of aggregate in it which have iron orr deposits, so sometimes little bits present rust, but they're easy to pick out and scrub off, and you get that with all brands of render. K-Rend seem to be excellent and marketing and getting their product out there, but most plasterers and renderers I've spoken to prefer to use other products 🤷

We went for white - they do a brilliant white which is much brighter, but we didn't want it to be blinding.

For a job of this size and scale, it was 3-4 weeks work (weather allowing) for 2-3 guys. The work was around £12-13K for materials and labour, and then an additional £1K for the scaffolding. Our house was around 180m2 surface area to render!

Thanks for doing this video fella. Looks a lovely job. From the video its seemed like you was on day 3 at the point of the recording being lost. I take that it wasn’t day 3 if it took 3/4 week. Or have i missed something.
@OfficeBoyBuilder
@OfficeBoyBuilder 2 жыл бұрын
I had 3-4 days of footage lost (including other jobs) but the rendering was spread out over 3-4 weeks, so I managed to keep the vast majority of that work, just the last few days, which included a small section of the top coat.
