Those opening notes are so in touch with the essence of 3 Billboards and its themes of grief, depression and redemption. It's so rare that a director can match a song with their film so perfectly.

January 2, 2001 this version by Renee was playing on my car radio as I drove home minutes after hearing my mother had just passed away. I cried like a baby and each time I hear it brings a tear to my eye.

Tis the last rose of summer, Left blooming alone; All her lovely companions Are faded and gone; No flower of her kindred, No rosebud is nigh, To reflect back her blushes, Or give sigh for sigh. I'll not leave thee, thou lone one! To pine on the stem; Since the lovely are sleeping, Go, sleep thou with them. Thus kindly I scatter, Thy leaves o'er the bed, Where thy mates of the garden Lie scentless and dead. So soon may I follow, When friendships decay, And from Love's shining circle The gems drop away. When true hearts lie withered, And fond ones are flown, Oh! who would inhabit This bleak world alone?

One of the most beautiful songs in the world. I played it on violin when I was 13 and still sing this in public several times. Thomas Moore had such a tragic life--his wife and children pre-deceased him. In his old age, he could not perform due to failing health.

The song was also used in the classic film Gaslight, where it is said to be the signature song of the Ingrid Bergman character's dead aunt, an opera/concert star. It comes back several times: a passing organ grinder, the sinister husband's piano playing, variations in the orchestral score, etc.

The tune and lyrics originally Irish but best known to opera lovers through its incorporation into the Italian language opera "Martha" by von Flotow who was German but wrote operas in Italian. An equally beautiful aria in that opera is "M'appari" - "As in a dream" a favorite of tenors like Gigli and many others. The "Last rose of summer" melody is taken up by the chorus and constitutes a kind of musical motif throughout the opera.

This is from the poem written by Thomas Moore (1779-1852). 'TIS THE LAST ROSE OF SUMMER 'TIS the last rose of summer, Left blooming alone ; All her lovely companions Are faded and gone ; No flower of her kindred, No rose-bud is nigh, To reflect back her blushes, Or give sigh for sigh. I'll not leave thee, thou lone one ! To pine on the stem ; Since the lovely are sleeping, Go sleep thou with them. Thus kindly I scatter Thy leaves o'er the bed, Where thy mates of the garden Lie scentless and dead. So soon may I follow, When friendships decay, And from Love's shining circle The gems drop away. Renee has Incredible control and power, and yes, the tempo is slow, but the voice is very beautiful and evenly held through every long and slow phrase, yes, it does bring a tear to the eye to hear something as beautiful as this, so masterfully done. Thank you for your comment. I agree about the difference in presentation. If you saw the version where Deanna sings seated in a chair, it's a scene from a movie. The older man in the scene is her father. He has surprised his daughter by asking her to sing for him. When she finishes he's going to tell her her voice is "no good," that he's taking her out of music school. His reason: to keep her away from a young man who attends that school. That's why he looks so miserable. He loves her voice.

Martha Anne Durbin's is very good; this is great. There's a huge span between the two plateaus. Neither are the voices comparable. This is a great voice, not "really good," not "fine," but GREAT. She has by far, to me, the best voice of all the female classical singers I've heard singing today.

I think I much prefer Deanna's version, though I admit to being somewhat biased with it comes to Deanna. I just prefer the simplicity and as the poster above said, purity of tone she brings. To me she presents this beautiful melody perfectly, I don't think it requires embellishment... I think we must also remember the huge advances in recording technology between now and when Deanna was performing. The older recordings don't capture the fullness of the voice so well. I think there's little doubt how highly those who heard Deanna live rated her.
