How To Honor Your Dream
Renee O'Connor joined the cast of Xena after years of pursuing her dream as a young girl in Texas. With drive, determination and loving support from her mom, Renee's pursuits were realized on a grand scale when she received that career-changing phone call to pack her bags for New Zealand to play the role of Gabrielle in Xena: Warrior Princess. I loved watching the evolution of Gabrielle on that show and it's lovely that Renee was also on the journey to evolve and expand who she was. I want to go to New Zealand.

I respect Renee so deeply because she's never felt a need to bend to others will and expectations. If she wanted to, she could've gone on to do 'Gabrielle: Warrior Princess" like Rob Tapert wanted. She could've gone on to pursue so many various roles, but her aims have always been for her own spiritual and emotional expansion, as far as it seems. It was never about achieving fame. I remember a quote of hers along the lines of 'the less attention I get, the better'. She's there to deliver messages in their purity and I love and respect her for that. She's certainly an individual. Some people think she's irrelevant because she isn't getting the same conventional work Lucy is, but that was her choice and the converse was Lucy's choice. They're both doing what they want

I would have watched Gabrielle: Warrior Princess, but it prolly would have bombed. Xena's days were numbered when they took her off prime time. Though syndicated, it aired in prime time, beating all the major networks. But they stopped that after season 3 or 4 and you had to search to find it. And it changed constantly. They'd of course have brought in a new cast to support her and it'd have the same spirit, but while Renee could carry a show, u don't know if that one would work. To be honest, it always bothered me that Gabrielle turned into Xena. The way they concluded the story in the final episode bothered me. It was like Xenas work is done. But Gabrielle wasn't about fighting. She'd protect the innocent, but she wasn't like Xena. She was different. I feel like Xena and Gabrielle were always equals with different strengths and the final episode rewrote it and said no... Xena trained Gabrielle, breaking her of who she was because it was lesser.

@@aelius93 I totally agree. Gabrielle said she wanted to become a warrior in the very first episode, and then she was young (16/17 according to Renée OC) and naïve. She didn't know anything about war and warriors, she just wanted to escape from his life and embrace adventure. Then in 6 seasons she never talked again about becoming a warrior. In Season 6 we can see it's not the person she is. Episodes Who's Gurkhan, Legacy, The Abyss and even more To Helicon and Back shows a characher who's still not made for that, that it's not her way and that she's just suffering inside in that role. Then comes A Friend In Need who places her as Xena's successor. It seems inconsistent, and sad. Why becoming a warrior should be an accomplishments in life? She had other qualities to have her own destiny. Xena was killing in cold blood before meeting Gabrielle, and continued afterward, though the motives changed. Gabrielle never did. She was not made to replace Xena, and unless they'd totally change the character Gabrielle would never have flourished in this life. Not to mention that she now lives with the ghost of her soulmate hanging above her head. Is it a life? What could be harder than mourning when the deceased is still present? Doesn't she have the right to rebuild her life, when at the end of the story she is less than 25? Obviously the writers did not think about all that, they gave us spectacular images and easy symbols. The warrior princess is dead, long live the new warrior princess. Look, now she has the chakram on her belt! They left us with a living character who now has much many reasons to embrace death than to embace life. Because she has too many scruples to fight warriors who don't, and because death is now the only way to actually reach Xena. Well, it's just a show.

I miss coming home after work and watching 2 episodes of Xena and an episode of Hercules. They went through the entire 6 seasons twice. I never watched Xena when it was originally on, back in the late 1990's and early 2000's, but I became a big fan when it was shown in syndication in 2015 and 2016. Love Renee!

I believe the best way to describe her is authentic and true to herself, while still retaining a kindness, even toward those she may not be fond of, which suggests a natural warning light internally. Something we all should listen to within ourselves, as well as the green light as others power up to tell you “no”.

She is the one and only. Her and Lucy made Xena and sadly we are told they are too old. There should be, we deserved a Revival having Lucy and Renee to finish what they made. Now with age discrimination we are forced down our throats like a Friend in Need a tacky reboot with a crap writer making Xena a kinder, younger gentler, gayer in a new costume kind of gal. After all Xena was only about who she did or did not sleep with. This made me miss Renee more and dream of the old times wishing for a Revival. Sadly this reboot kills the dream as well as the name.

I've always struggled to understand poetic metaphorical aesthetic language. I see it so much by fans towards their favourite celebrities, characters and people who they don't really know all that well but place . I could say something like, "She has a beautiful, deep, peaceful and inspiring soul. She radiates the pure light and warmth of her generous heart like a shining star in my world etc." But of course, nobody can see any of this. Its why religious texts, preachers, charlatans, psychics, spiritualists, cold readers, artists, poets and homeopathic therapists use such phrases. Barnum statements are great for sounding profound, as they trick people into projecting their own ideas, beliefs and memories onto their words. The truth of any celebrity or person is far more everyday. What I got from this interview was: 1) Renee was strongly motivated as a child to act; 2) Her mum encouraged this and took her to various acting classes and events; 3) After years of getting gigs as a child actor, teenager and young adult, Renee got her big break working in New Zealand on the Xena show; 4) It was hard work and she learned lots from the cast and crew; 5) After the show ended she struggled to adjust. She also had a baby, which was also difficult to adjust to; 6) Raising her children, and the shift of some of her focus from herself to her children has made her appreciate her mum's efforts. 7) She hopes and anticipates that her children will be happy and successful in their lives. Sometimes its difficult to formulate concepts into words. But there's nothing magical or mystical going on. No soul or heart or light or stars. No flowers, waves, sand, sky, planets, plants, animals or supernatural anatomy or processes. Its a professional person giving a publicly acceptable summary potted narrative of their life, with an account of their experiences that is professional, prosocial and in line with their public image persona. When we realise this, a realistic warts-and-all appreciation of a hard-working person can really begin.

This is the difference between creative writing, and writing merely to convey practical knowledge and perspective. Creative writing isn't a form of manipulation, it's a way of using language like one would use colors to paint an abstract painting. What's the point? It gives words to the wordless, it channels a plane of feeling and thought that goes beyond and beneath the surface of what's right in front of us. None of it is a trick. That's the point, to conjure something from within people that they may not ordinarily be aware of but that's indefinitely vital to spiritual and emotional transformation and awareness However, we all think differently. We all have different minds. You see things the way you do for a reason, but there's nothing wrong with others who think in a different manner too. Some people are just more artistic and abstract thinkers. If you aren't one, that's ok too. But don't take it as not having any truth in it. I'll admit, I'm responding because I'm a writer myself and a part of what you wrote bothered me, but I truly understand we all think differently. Some people think more metaphorically and symbolically. A mind like yours is probably good for mathematics or business whereas people like me would fail in those areas Do remember, Renee herself is a highly creative individual and has done some creative writing

I thoroughly enjoyed both the comment and the response. Bieng a logical type personality the original comment appealed to my sensibility. The response was equally refreshing because although I'm not the creative type I appreciate the other side more and more as I grow older. Thank you both for expressing your views so eloquently. I think Renee is great because she is an example of what can be but what alludes so many.

Renne you always followed the directive, but following your heart is paving the way like kevin smith. In a way that role as gabrael shut you down.in order to direct you must understand the spirit of things. Have you ever rebelled against a doctrine? Were you aware of one?? Kevin smith was but he lost his balance and gave up to an adventure instead of been also cutious about it. With you my love its the opposite; trying to be an adventurer without creating risks puts you in a comfortable position isnt it? I can give you the world renne...give me a chance....after all you lost good years as you didnt unlock your conciosness.
