Personally I think if Jesus’s teachings didn’t exist humanity wouldn’t have experienced the, the crusades, the dark ages, Jones town, Waco, Mormans, and women would have complete reproductive control of their bodies in the USA. Jesus was a dude who got martyred but he was just a guy. Probably along the lines of David Koresh except probably schizophrenic or with type one bi polar you know any illness that produces symptoms of delusions.

Little piece of Trivia here. Defoe filmed the movie Platoon before making this movie. IN Platoon one of the soldiers O'niel makes a statement about Defoe's character in Platoon " who does he think he is...Jesus Christ??" I found this ironic.

This has to be made up or wrong..In an interview with LMU titled “the Hollywood masters” Willem said that he passed up on Platoon and worked on the last temptation first. You can Google this too, production started in 1983 for the last temptation and platoon in February 1986.

This is one of the best analysis of this remarkable movie I've come across. For me, as a Christian, this is one of my favorite movies precisely because it shows Jesus struggling with his humanity and all the issues related to being human, touching on the important issues that make the story of Jesus so universal. (Not to mention the amazing soundtrack by Peter Gabriel, but I digress). The movie does not answer all the questions it raises, but at least it raises the questions, and there is a lot to be said for not giving answers that one might not have. Sometimes it's ok not to have the answers.

Probably my favorite part in this film is when you see John the Baptist at the Jordan River performing not baptism, but mikvah, or Jewish ritual cleansing in which the feet are immersed and water poured on the head as the benediction (May the Lord bless you and keep you...) spoken. This is performed after becoming ritually defiled by handling dead bodies or unkosher food or after sex or performing a circumcision, similar to wudu in Islam or footwashing in some Calvinist churches. On top of that, pagans cutting themselves for Baal and castrating themselves for Cybele, plus lesbian sex for Astarte, Ishtar, and Aphrodite occurs right beside the holy event, plus multiple "false" messiahs preaching nearby. It's to me one of the most historically accurate versions of a literal Jesus story I've seen. Furthermore, Jesus is naked when flogged and crucified as opposed to a loincloth. Little-known fact, the loincloth is to Jesus what the fig leaf is to Adam and Eve.
@davidrausch7941
@davidrausch7941 2 жыл бұрын
Funny how the addiction of the loincloth for the sake of chastity might completely miss the point- that being that the whole point of crucifixion isn't just violent, agonising death but public humiliation and being made an example of. Of course they wouldn't wouldn't maintained His dignity

I saw this movie when it was released with a couple of friends. There were about 30 people picketing outside chanting scripture. To me, the film was a powerful experience for all the reasons mentioned in the review. - I bought the Criterion Collection DVD and the deep sincerity and thought by the writer Paul Schrader and Scorsese was clearly evident in their discussions on it. But many of the religious did not appreciate that and hated this movie. Scorsese received death threats and there were even a few riots in Europe over the showing of "The Last Temptation of Christ". Under pressure from boycotts, the film was not shown in some theaters and was banned in several countries. I recall that Blockbuster never offered this film for rent in its stores. - "The Last Temptation of Christ" is an exploration of the idea of Jesus, Judas, Satan and Christianity. It's gritty and mystical. Well worth watching imo.

The way I see it, the Bible describing him as a "son of man" essentially implies he would have the same temptations as a man. I don't get why many hardcore Christians get riled up about this movie for depicting his "manly" temptations. I am no theologian, but if Jesus was a son of man then doesn't that mean that he would experience the temptations of all men, including sex and violence? Isn't the point of the Jesus story to show that is it not impossible for men to act as a "child of God?"
@camdavey5073
@camdavey5073 Жыл бұрын
you’re right, He was absolutely exposed to all the same temptations as any other man. The defining difference is that He never gave in to temptation, He never sinned - not once. That means He never had a lustful thought, He never cursed, He never sinned in anger, He never coveted or was greedy. So to include any of these depictions of Jesus is already inaccurate both Biblically and theologically.
@ouwenkaurrany7764
@ouwenkaurrany7764 8 ай бұрын
You’re completely wrong. The title “son of man” completely refers to Daniel 7:13 in which it talks of another being who has an equivalent glory to that of God and if you’re looking for the title to describe a man according to the bible that would be “son of God”. Ya it’s a bit weird but is just backwards. So son of God is man and son of Man is God or Jesus.

@@camdavey5073 Inaccurate to YOUR view of the Bible and YOUR ideas of theology. I mean lazy atheists have overused the "much of Christianity picks and chooses what parts of the Bible it wants to adhere too" argument to no end but it bares repeating here too. All the stories of both the Old Testament (Torah) and New Testament were written by a hodgepodge of different authors sometimes centuries apart. For many priests in the Catholic Church, studying who wrote the Bible and when they did is considered a necessary part of theological study. Ultimately, all religions boil down to shared stories that bring together different peoples. The Bible is only the word of God because the dudes who wrote it said it was. There were many authors who wrote many books hoping they would be chosen by the young Church to be a part of their official texts. The Church chose texts that furthered its own goals like differing itself from Judaism and trying to get chummy with the Romans (hence the texts chosen that played up the failure of Jewish leaders) That view of Jesus is based right in the vile currant of reactionary-ism that extremest Islam does.

The thing is, Jesus was tempted yet he never gave in or thought about succumbing to it. (At least as how it is interpreted) Jesus himself said that just by thinking of committing an act you already sinned, so I get that this movie is more of a psychological thriller, but Jesus was probably the strongest-willed person to ever live. The only moment of weakness was in his time of death and the day before his death where he was psychologically and physically tortured. The film also shows him doing some weird stuff like having feelings form Mary, seeing women naked, getting humiliated by Judas, working with the Romans to kill others, apologizing for his sin, breaking his fast, acting like a mad men, showing him covered in dirt & filth, and even showing in many scenes the devil getting to his head. I liked that it is a psychological thriller but it was made with the biggest religious entity in the world so of course it's gonna be controversial. Also sex is Tabu in Christianity. Extremely Tabu, that's the sin and topic I will say American evangelicals and Catholics alike are the most afraid and ashamed to talk about. So this was probably the biggest reason of why this movie wasn't that well received. At least in the US we are ok with movies showing extreme violence but not sex, while in Europe its kinda the opposite. European movies show a lot more sex and nakedness compared to American movies. At least from my own experience seeing both. So it has to be more with the culture. (A reason why everyone loves the passion although its hard to watch) Also Jesus is a paradoxical figure, because if he was really God he didn't struggle with stuff, but if he was really a man then he did, but you cant be the 2, unless you are a demi-god but its not believed he was a demigod but a full god. I have my own interpretations of this in a way that at least make sense to me.

I love The Last Temptation of Christ. It's my favorite biblical movie & in my top 3 Scorsese movies. I also enjoyed this movie, but I have to disagree that it's a "valid interpretation of the gospels". That's a stretch. So many details in the movie are not mentioned in the gospels. There's no evidence that Jesus was ever confused about his destiny as the messiah. Several times he tells his disciples that he's going to die. Also, Jesus never told Judas to betray him. A valid interpretation can't fill in details just because they aren't there. If the movies goal was interpretation (it's not), it did a bad job. But just because it's not an interpretation doesn't mean it's not a useful movie. Instead of directly explaining the gospels, it provides an interesting comparison. Because it changes key details, it forces people to really consider the implications of those details. E.g. why is it important that Judas had evil intentions? Or, what does it show about Jesus that he knew about his death before he even entered Jerusalem? This movie made me consider these questions. It's more like a hypothetical rewrite of the gospels. Again, I really like this movie, but as a Christian I enjoy it only as an interesting hypothetical, not as a true story. That's the great thing about literature, though. Truth can be expressed through fiction.
@MyNameIsJustinKeenan

@@drewwitte8473 "truth can be expressed through fiction" very well put! I would add that this consideration from a different perspective gives opportunity for deeper review, especially for those already familiar with the gospels from a young age. Full of religion hangups and superstitions due to upbringing (mother was Catholic, had a crisis of faith and switched to Protestantism, taking me along for the ride while still a pre-teen), I saw The Last Temptation Of Christ on VHS while in college. Only then, only after seeing this extraordinary movie, did I lose my lifelong fear of the dark. In the process of leaving behind his 80s wilderness years, Scorsese knocked it out of the ballpark with this masterwork. Then there's that Peter Gabriel soundtrack. Oh, that music!

Scorsese did ask De Niro if he was interested in the lead role but he felt he wasn't right for it. Scorsese's initial choice for Jesus has been Aidan Quinn when he originally set out to make the film in 1983. Quinn and De Niro would go on to play brothers in Roland Joffe's The Mission. Sting had been approached to play Pilate but the part would eventually go to David Bowie.

This movie was my introduction to mature topics in filmmaking, to World Music, to the underpinnings of what used to be something I didn't so much have faith in as I mechanically observed - and to Willem Dafoe. Ironically, my second-favorite role of his after Jesus is Max Schreck, in "Shadow of the Vampire". Nowadays, though, I can't go back to Scorcese's classic without noticing how much of an accent Dafoe has. It's like Jesus was born in Brooklyn sometime in the sixties, got isekai'd over to late-Roman Judea once he turned thirty and just rolled with it.
@eldiran2
@eldiran2 2 жыл бұрын
And THAT is probably more of a valid criticism of the film--the 'New Yark' accents. It's why most other film depictions which use British actors made more sense--it is an older accent, and we can imagine that it may have sort of existed way back then. But New York, American? I also saw it in Italy also, with Italian dubbing, and in those voices it was far more believable.

The conversation in the movie between Judas and Jesus discussing the need for him to die on the cross for the salvation of mankind boils down to one heavy key point between best friends. Judas is torn that he must betray Christ, and weeps in protest. Jesus comforts him by saying that it’s the will of God. Judas asks, “Oh Rabbi, if the roles were reversed, could you betray me in this way?” Jesus responds, “For the Lord God has seen to assign me the easier task of being slain.” He is counting on Judas to betray him. Beliefs or faith aside, that conviction is eternally gangster AF.

has anyone here read the apocryphal gospels? One is that of Judas. In it, it says Judas didn't want to kill Jesus at all, but in the end he had to, and yes, he takes the silver blood money. But it was Jesus who ordered him to "betray" him to the Romans (in my belief, without creating a martyr, Christianity would never have had such an impact on the beliefs of so many, throughout the centuries, so Judas *had* to be the one to do it). I've read plenty of apocryphal gospels (and Mary Magdelene had hers, too, Peter jealous of her because of the special attention and relationship she had with Jesus, and in it, she is basically Jesus' right-hand woman). And so many of these gospels, not admitted by any church, are especially interesting. Who knows who Jesus really was? I used to be a Catholic, but have been a pagan for over 20 years, and yet, historically, (from what we know about him - practically nothing), I find his story fascinating. But I believe that if he existed, he was just a man inspired by god. Trying to change Judeism, not create a new religion, hence the Passover, celebrated during the Jewish Passover or Pessach, and the last supper being celebrated on the eve of the Sabbath.

The "God of the Old and New Testament are different beings" idea appeared before the Book of Revelations was widely accepted canon (and before such a ting as a Christian canon was even being defined). The New Testament of Marcion, the most important figure that supported this view, included only a version of Luke and some of the Pauline letters. It is even possible (although unlikely) that Revelations had not even been written at this point. Relations have also have a troubled relation to canon through history. Many of the church father listed it as dubious in their canon-lists or didn't include it at all. Even Martin Luther wanted to remove it from his edition of the bible and only included it under the assumption that people would take it as a metaphor for a personal struggle of faith rather than an accurate depiction of the end times. Also, when people like Marcion say that the God of the Old Testament is not merciful they generally refer to his actions rather than his, or his prophet's, words. One of their criticisms is also that they view him as a hypocrite and a liar; saying that he is merciful, yet acting vengeful and petty, saying that he omniscient, yet being shown to be ignorant of certain things, etc.
@Painocus
@Painocus 8 жыл бұрын
TheRezro: I don't give the early "heretics" any less clam on authenticity than their contemporary Orthodox/Catholics. And saying that the God of the Old and New testament are different is inherently heretical in their eyes anyways, so that was kinda a given from the get-go. Oh, and Marcion and his followers wasn't Gnostic (at-least not by most definitions of the word) Before the Cathars, Gnostics tended to either ignore the OT or radically reinterpret it in detail. Calling them antisemitic is absurd. The only possible argument is that they rejected the Old Testament. So by that logic anyone who is not Jewish would be antisemitic. They simply rejected the view of God presented by the then-traditional Judaism. (And even then not entirely, as most of them considered it a legit God, just not the same God as theirs.) There are far worse things in the OT than "an eye for an eye". Look up Deuteronomy 13:6-10 for example. The things you said about the Apocalypse is essentially what I said, but Leon's argument hinges on that it is interpreted literally.

sadly a lot of us christians seem to also forget christ's last moment of doubt on the cross, asking why his father, god, abandoned him. this to me as a kid always stood out as a powerful moment where even son of god doubts him, because he's also the son of man. before correcting himself.

Look, I basically believe all religions are the devil that their fears created long ago when everything was a scary mystery. BUT, wouldn't saying that Jesus was all god negate all meaning of his "sacrifice"? It would be as meaningful as an actor "dying" on stage, right? Most theologians make for very poor thinkers I find.

I am an atheist and went into the film as just another moviegoing experience, as well as a fan of Martin Scorsese. I found the film both moving and beautiful. I've seen a couple films about Jesus previously but none struck me so deeply as the Last Temptation of Christ. Both Willem Defoe and Harvey Keitel give bravura performances and bring a humanity to both characters that I hadn't seen in any other of those films. Judas' betrayal was simply an act of greed, whereas here Judas is tasked with an mission which he struggles to carry out. I loaned a VHS copy I had to a co-worker to get her opinion. She was a believer and I was interested in her reaction. She thought that Jesus was "too human". It was curious remark, but I don't think I pushed the issue because I knew what a prickly subject religion could be and I'm not a bully about to browbeat anyone's beliefs. That's one of the aspects of the film the touched me was the duality between the human and the holy---at least within the reality of the film. It can be taken metaphorically as we all have to contend with those impulses within us, one pulls toward the good and the other for bad. This is how I approach the story of Jesus, not as a literal figure but more symbolic of those conflicting emotions which continue to burden us down and keep us from moving forward. I read the novel not long afterwards. They did a remarkable job adapting this very dense story without sacrificing the bigger questions being asked. I've read it several times now and highly recommend reading it for fans of the film. My favourite scene is at the end when his apostles come to visit and Judas is angered that Jesus failed to carry out his side of their bargain. "You broke my heart, " he says. However there are a few fleeting moments towards the end where Defoe looks like Charles Manson.

The irony of the reaction to this movie is in how much hatred "Christians" were able to show and justify. That sadly continues even more and is more virulent only 5 years later.

This film is awesome. It explores topics about Jesus life which are controversial at best. For example, the Judas factor. Did Judas betray Christ for silver or was it preordained. The film takes the slant that Jesus asks Judas to betray him to fulfill the prophecy that the messiah would be the sacrificial lamb. Scripture supports this theory in the Last Supper when Jesus makes it clear that Judas would betray him. That being said, Judas betrayed Jesus out of free will. He could have decided that he would not. Confusing isn't it. I guess the thing I like most about this film is that it explores Jesus as a man who had his moments of doubt as we all do. Paul's conversation with the human Jesus, who has lost his messianic mission, was interesting when he pointed out that the idea of salvation of man through the resurrection is what is important. It is man's destiny to receive salvation because it gives man hope and a destiny beyond mortality. When Jesus was suffering on the cross, scripture tells that Jesus called out to God and said, "why hast thou forsaken me". Psalm 22:2 and is referenced several times throughout scripture. That being said, the visit by the little girl who shows Jesus what life could have been like without following the messianic mission, was not in the realm of fiction. So much is open to interpretation here. I think I will add this to my private collection.

Very true words from the narrator, and his point often missed, about the false narrative of the Old Testament portraying God as Mr. Wrathful, and the New Testament showing a new and different God, of Love. The consistency is there, but you have to not fall for simplistic concepts - ah well, I have. But as things come around and around, you learn to think for yourself.

Such a good film. It's obviously well-known, but unfortunately not enough people have actually watched it. I'm guessing it's caught between two worlds: religious backlash prevented many Christians from watching it, while people like me, too young to have experienced the backlash, yet too irreligious to have more than the passing awareness required to think of it as another great Scorsese character-piece rather than retelling of the Passion a la Mel Gibson. The scene when he begs God for another way to accomplish his task than crucifixion or when Jesus tells Judas that _he_ has the truly difficult task, betraying his saviour, while he only has to be crucified were heartbreaking. Another great one is where Paul is trying to convert a crowd like he's selling a used car and the exchange he and Jesus have afterward.

If Judas betrayed Jesus and Jesus was condemned to be crucified, then how was Jesus making a sacrifice? What choice did he have? Jesus asking Judas to betray him is something that only adds another level of compassion to Christ. Why this would be blasphemous is beyond me. Then not only did he actually make the decision to be crucified but he did it with the temptations of man on his mind. If that isn’t painting Jesus in a positive light then I don’t know what is, maybe showing him get whipped for 2 hours.
