@@angelandflare1097 I know, and I remember when I saw people arguing over Joker vs Parasite. Without even KNOWING what Joker really is about. I would say that not just half but at least 10% of the people who watched Joker really understand it. Parasite is a great movie, but comparing it with Joker when you dont even get what the movie is saying its laughable. Ironically Joker in the end saying "you wont get it" turned out to be for the audience.

The director stated that he wanted to show violence with consequence! Iron man kills hundreds of people in a scene but there is no consequence of his actions, no emotional reaction, no blood or police so he doesn't seem violent. Todd Philips stated, that it is the responsibility of the film maker to show the effects of violence, and I totally agree.

Everyone who was mad about the Aurora theater shooting forgot two very important things. First, the shooter was not dressed as Joker, but coincidentally had his hair dyed green. Second, by his own admission, he only chose the Batman film because it was the biggest opening movie premiere at the time.

Probably the thing I love the most is that it still keeps to the uncertainty of Joker's origins and it's got a good sense of an unreliable narrator. Its an origin story but nothing is concrete. There is moments like Arthur's fantasies or inconsistencies where things don't add up or even the movie blatantly saying that Arthur and his neighbor weren't actually together shows that you can't fully take everything you're being told here as truth. Kinda like in the animated series and how he manipulated Harley into feeling sympathy for him.

The things I know about Protagonist and Antagonist, is this: The Protagonist doesn't always have to be good, and the Antagonist doesn't always have to be bad. *Edit:* Example: The main Protagonist in a show called You, is a stalker/killer/and a overall bad person. An example of a non-evil Antagonist that I know personally from watching it, would be in the Musical Hamilton with Alexander and Thomas constantly fighting politically. It's not that Thomas is an evil person overall in the Musical, it's just that he has differing opinions than our Protagonist, Hamilton.

@@sugartoothYT It wasn't that he can't have an origin story it's that he shouldn't, it's become his mystic an essential part of who he is is that we don't know who he is. The movie was ok well good, but I love the character having no name no solid facts as to his true identity. That's why most people like "The Killing Joke as his "definitive origin story" the comic just showed him as a failed stand up who wanted to do 1 crime job for $, his pregnant wife dies, job goes bad all in 1 day and it started his thinking of everyone is just 1 bad day from being me. Bruce had 1 bad day where he lost everything and it made him become Batman eventually. Jokers turned him into the polar opposite, but there was no name no arthur no mother with issues and daddy issues just 1 bad day. And he's so gone that even he doesn't remember his previous life, this Joker is like Two-Face he was this 1 person with a "career" so to speak then goes bad but we still know who he was and what made him. I still prefer not knowing his name and everything that happened and every mental condition he has and one's he possibly inherited from his mother and all society has done. The movie is a great statement on mental issues and how we as society treat those I take nothing away from Todd there, but just in terms of my comic book Joker the less background the better for me.

Arthur runs the way he does because he's gotten use to running in the clown shoes, compare his running in any scene wearing regular shoes with the scene at the beginning of him running with clown shoes, it's the same high stepping gait. He subconsciously always runs as if he's still wearing the clown shoes. Fun Fact: Phoenix dislocated his knee while he was stomping and kicking the garbage in the alley, that's why he dropped down at the end on his ass and started holding it.

Joker by himself isn't really scary, what's scary is him having an army to command, so by the end he has power. I think they are talking about a sequel and Joker and Harley Quinn would be perfect, he meets her there and she helps him escape. I hope so cause Suicide Squad was NOT Harley Quinn.

I believe the word that escaped you through the entire "antagonist" vs "protagonist" argument was "antihero"... of which the contrary would be (and certainly the way audiences feel about Arthur in particular) "antivillain".

What I love about this movie is, like the traditional Joker, nothing is 100% clear. Thomas could be Arther’s father, Penny could be Arther’s real mother, Arther and Bruce might be brothers but there is no answer. It’s kept vague and it’s so Joker

I think that it's interesting that you brought up DC having better villains than Marvel, which to an extent I think it's true, DC has created a villain so iconic that he rivals most of DC's heroes in terms of popularity and he also evolves with audiences, as a kid Joker is a goofy prankster then as you get older you learn about the more mature stories and far more disturbing interpretations of that character. I feel that with Marvel whilst they do have a lot of good villains they all are trapped in a shell of goofiness, and don't get me wrong that works fine in a comic book, but translating that into a film doesn't always work, characters like Thanos or the Vulture were really well received but they're drastically different from their comic counterparts in many ways, heck I'd argue that the only villain that ever came close to being Marvel's Joker would be Doctor Doom, for a long time he was the main reoccurring villain within Marvel comics and has become a very compelling character, but he's still goofy as hell, from his costume to his name or to his origin even, it's honestly not hard to understand why he's never had a good movie adaptation that makes him a character of mass appeal, whereas someone like Joker has done it time and time again in film.

To clarify: a protagonist is the character that the story is about while the antagonist is the character that directly opposes the protagonist. The terms don't make moral judgements of the character. A popular contemporary example would be breaking bad. The story is about walter white and as the story progresses it becomes clearer to the audience that he's not a good guy at all.

Me and my uncle had talked about Arthur being Thomas' son. My uncle didn't think so since they looked so close in age and the documents Arthur had found. As for me, I think Arthur is a Wayne. As TVTropes pointed out, but men have dark hair and a similar nose shape. Plus, if you look at the actors' date of births, Joaquin Pheonix is young enough to be Brett Cullen's kid. There was also that picture of a young Penny Fleck where the back reads "You have a beautiful smile" (or something like that). And because Thomas' family is rich, he really could've set Penny up as an abusive parent and/or forged the adoption papers to give her less credence if she were to out him as fathering her child. Speaking of paternity theories, I can't help but link this film up with "The Crow" (1993 film). There's something about Joaquin Phoenix's portrayal that just reminds me of Brandon Lee. And, whiIe believe Arthur Fleck is the long-lost father of Eric Draven from "The Crow", I still can't help but theorize him being the long-lost father Heath Ledger's Joker as well. Arthur could've unknowingly conceived Eric and Heath's Joker out of wedlock or in a short-lived marriage prior to "The Joker". And when the boy grew old enough to discover his parentage, he decided to take the helm as the Clown Prince of Crime. Eric, meanwhile, would've been more but eventually took the high ground until his and Shelley's gruesome deaths. Like Uncle Batman, he would fight evil. But like Daddy Joker, he would not be afraid to kill.

antagonist - a person who actively opposes or is hostile to someone or something; an adversary. Protagonist - the leading character or one of the major characters in a play, film, novel, etc.. antagonist can be the good guy in the movie but he must be a hostile or negative character, protagonist is simply the leading role in the art in question

The flashback of his mom reminds me a bit of Harley Quinn. I know it’s not in the same universe but man, it would make a lot of sense. He already seems to have a weird thing with his mom when he’s laying in her bed while she’s at the hospital. this would be messed up but would also somewhat explain the abusive relationship between him and Harley. I’m not a comic or dc aficionado. Just my thoughts based on the small bit of info I do have. Mommy issues to the max manifesting in future relationships. Yiiiiikes. Also, the camerawork IS amazing in this movie. I agree. :) I wish I understood everything that went into it.
