14-My ex's father had a massive heart attack. On the way to the hospital in the ambulance, the guys kept going on about how 'he wouldn't live'. Same at the hospital. After TWO DAYS they were telling his family to switch the machines off. When he told me this I was outraged "he's just had an major interruption in his bodies electrical system, TWO DAYS is not nearly long enough for his body to get back to it's normal rhythm'. So they didn't turn them off. His father is now fine, just has a limp and he even wrote a paper used in the same hospital about his experience. Apparently he heard every word they said in the ambulance and hospital, even when they were telling his family to switch them off and was terrified. He couldn't do or say anything to tell them he was there and could hear them. Can you imagine hearing all that and not being able to tell them you're there and awake!

I was there at the '89 World Series, I was three years old and with my dad and uncle when the quake hit. All I really remember from that was people screaming and the long wait to go home (we were forced to stay in the city for about a day and a half while infrastructure was brought back up.) I do have vague memories of seeing a crack in a stadium wall near where we were sitting, but that may just be a fabrication from my young mind. All in all it was a pretty scary experience for a young child, but made for a cool story.

I would feel so much more comfortable in a small plane with a parachute, then I do in a large commercial airliner. While thats statistically probably not accurate on which is more safe, just personally I like the idea of if things go wrong with the plane having the freedom to just jump. Rather then having to risk an emergency landing or crash.
