The direct reference to Ed Wood and Bela Lugosi at the beginning can't be more obvious, I mean these are Bela Lugosi scenes played by Nicholas Cage...Our Elvis guy thinks this is a reference to Murnau's Nosferatu...a movie shot 40 years earlier !!!*

Yes! That’s exactly what I like about Nicolas Hoult but wasn’t able to describe. He has such great on screen chemistry with anyone he works with no matter how seemingly ridiculous. I really liked renfield, I found all the old timey vampire rules to be hilarious such as the welcome mat letting Dracula in and such. I also really liked the comic book style violence just being so over the top and comical. The only part that kinda killed it for me was the gang being kind of surface level imo. Nicholas cage as Dracula was a god tier choice and we need more of it. Overall a good movie and I will rewatch it for sure.

This plot has its holes. Every story does... But that scene in which Dracula tries to turn his abuse upon Renfield in his apartment was nothing short of tragic. Seeing that process of someone who's spent years and years beating you down, only to turn around and tell you that it's your fault is terrifyingly accurate. Narcissists and abusers will always either deny or rationalize their abuse. This movie isn't amazing in any traditional sense, but it's incredibly relevant and impactful to a lot of people who have had relationships like this. Whether it be with romantic partners or even parents.

Small funfact: the flashback-sequence isn't only inspired by old vampire-movies, these scenes are literally taken out of the 1931-Dracula movie with Bela Lugosi, just with the two Nic(h)olas'es taking over the spot of him and Dwight Frye. It's pretty sweet and one of the reason I love this movie way more than I should, it really feels like someone appreciates the old universal monster-flicks the same way I do.

I've been patiently waiting for a little over a year to see you talk about this movie. I had the privilege of working on this production and constantly thought, "Man, I can't wait til Elvis sees this!" Renfield was one of the very few productions where I had fun while working. I LOVED working with my camera crew and still work with some of them to this day; I even got to operate the camera for the fight scene between Cage and Awkwafina. Nick Hoult, Nic Cage, and Awkwafina were some of the nicest actors I've ever met on set, especially Hoult. Cage is incredibly down to earth and humble, (not many actors are like that on set, so it was refreshing). I've heard from my coworkers that a lot of content was edited out of the final cut, which is a bummer. I unfortunately haven't had the time to watch the movie for myself just yet cause my life is currently a mess, but I intend on watching it soon. I'm so glad that Renfield is getting so much praise!

There is something you got wrong here Elvis, in the scene where Renfield first gets blamed for the massacre of the therapy group, her assumption that he was responsible actually makes more sense than you give credit for. You forget that before this, she watched him annihilate a group of armed gangsters, while doing stuff like chopping a dude's arms clean off with a dinner plate, and impaling a guy with a table. She's already seen Renfield do seemingly superhuman things before this point, so it makes sense for her to assume that he could massacre the church group with his bare hands.

I couldn't stop laughing during this movie and got teary-eyed during the more emotional parts like the codependent abusive relationship between Dracula and Renfield. There were also a bunch of nods to the novel and the Bela Legosi version. Superimposed scenes foe the flashback, Redfield eating bugs, the Lobo family being the wolves who Dracula had control over and were his "children of the night" (tho I kept thinking they were gonna introduce the family being dormant werewolves or something with all the wolf imagery). Loved this movie!! Haven't had so much fun with a movie in a long time before this one :)

Renfield was great, I found it very amusing and I think all the actors had a lot of fun XD. Also Rebecca doesn't take him back to her place- Renfield brings her to his place. She passes out. It also makes sense that all the bodies would still be in the gym - her partner was supposed to call in the murders, and instead he called the Lobos and they came to get Renfield- not to secure the scene. They were likely all left there, and since all the cops were basically reassigned to deal with Rebecca and Renfield, I doubt any family members were called either. It was 1 or 2 days between the murders and Dracula dying it seems.

Getting recognised in the theater is cool. Roll with it and just say Hi when you go in for that 3rd time 😊 (I've been there, used to work in a movie theater and also go to the movies like 1-2 times a week 😅)

in the original dracula text, renfield in almost every moment we see him is imprisoned and obsessed with dracula and eating bugs especially flys his power is a reference to that yk

i will say as someone who has recently read dracula, renfeild eating bugs canonically makes sense for his character, as that is an actual plot point within the book. it does sound ridiculous if you dont have the context for sure, but having it makes it cool i think.

14:10 I actually got to go to an early screening of the movie where the director did a Q&A, and he said there were only ever two people he considered for Dracula: Nicolas Cage and Daniel Day Lewis

I like Jeremy Jahns' review of this movie, saying that it's like they had two scripts, a vampire movie, and a mobster movie, that were 45 minutes worth each, and wanting to make a whole movie, they just mashed them together. 1 + 1 = Renfield. Your review seemed to validate that. Great video. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

The beginning of the movie when it goes to the flashbacks, they actually recreated scenes from the original Dracula’s movie from 1930s. So technically this is a sequel to the original Dracula lol. Fucking awesome
