A lot of people don’t like to believe that Renji became stronger than some captains but considering how easily he dealt with the same Mask that stomped Kensei and still easily dominated Mask through several more power boosts + Vollstandig, I think that speaks for itself. And while Kensei did have his hollow mask, I imagine the power boost he would gain wouldn’t be enough to have closed the gap between him and Renji to the point where he could dominate Mask at his peak of his power displayed the same way Renji did in his new Bankai.

So, essentially, the way Mask's power works is that 'James' is the basis for everything. When James cries, Mask is healed. When James cheers, Mask gets physically stronger. That's why he went from getting bodied by Lieutenants to bodying them and then getting bodied by Captains to bodying them. Mask and James are both sides of the same existence, meaning while one of them remains, the other can't die, which allows James to perpetually increase Mask's strength. Also, it is implied that Mask's true self is actually James. When Yhwach is reabsorbing Mask's power, he talks about 'James' doing a good job. The theory is that James is really weak on his own and, when granted the power by Ywach, it took on the form of what James looked up to the most: 'Superheroes' or, in this case, WWE style wrestlers circa the era with Ultimate Warrior, Hulk Hogan, and Randy Savage. There were a lot of kids that looked up to characters like that during that time, so James is a reflection of that.

Mask ability, basically as long as he's alive james can't die and vice versa if james alive mask can't die. He lost because james wasn't able to revive in time after the supernova
