Reno Unlimited Gold Race 2015 with Voodoo mayday landing.

The final Gold race of the 2015 National Championship Air Races is in the books, Robert 'Hoot' Gibson slowly pulled away from the group as Rare Bear clawed her way passed Voodoo due to engine trouble for the second place spot.
I left the whole mayday sequence to show how skillfully Steve controlled a potential deadly situation. Voodoo will be back and stronger than ever!!

Listen to it! I'd been to a bunch of airshows and heard the beautiful sound of a Merilin a few times before but when I went to Reno years ago and heard the sound of a Merlin being pushed hard it was a little frightening. I love seeing'hearing them at the airshows and i really hope we'll all be seeing/hearing them 50 years from now! Wow what music!

That's very sad to hear. Bob Hoover was an absolute gentleman and the perfect pilot. I don't think he ever called them "planes" or "airplanes", ... it was always "aircraft." In the early 1970s I was a radio announcer for a local FM station that broadcast the races, live, in stereo (!!). The listeners loved it.

Beautiful landing under what looked like engine-out conditions. Great sideslip/crabbing to lose altitude and get to the right glideslope, and perfect crab kick at the end to get it down and level. Even coasted it off the runway and out of the way. Awesome piloting, far more so than what's required to win a race - getting a crippled racer down like that is a serious feat. Attaboy!

Makes me wonder why so many small aircraft crash simply because of engine failure.
@spannaspinna
@spannaspinna Жыл бұрын
It’s not hard you get hammered with engine out landings when you’re learning to fly , you’ll never be able to solo unless you can do a tidy engine out landing and execute a decent side slip to lose altitude in a hurry it’s not difficult
@ArchTeryx00
@ArchTeryx00 Жыл бұрын
@@spannaspinna Way too many pilots take these drills for granted and sudden loss of engine power when you're flying a racing plane is a bit of a different beast than when your C172 engine quits - deceleration forces are stronger and you're far lower altitude. That's a more difficult recovery to execute, and this pilot ran a clinic on dealing with a low-altitude engine-out situation.
@spannaspinna
@spannaspinna Жыл бұрын
@@ArchTeryx00 yes but you also have a lot of airspeed which can be readily converted to altitude , altitude buys time and options
@ArchTeryx00
@ArchTeryx00 Жыл бұрын
@@spannaspinna Yep and that's exactly what he did. Plus, the one advantage of being in a race is that you're right next to the airfield. If you can get altitude enough to glide, you have plenty of time to get lined up and take it in. Plus (IIRC) the race is yellow-flagged if someone loses an engine and resumed when they are clear of the course.

We live on the other side of the mountains from the Reno air races location. We drive over the hills in my Jeep and watch the show every year. I picked an area were the jets make their turnouts. They get pretty low in that spot. I've taken some really great photos over the years. Even got many pilots to wave back. Best one was we got buzzed by two F22's just skimming the tops of the little trees out there, the roar was so loud thought they'd crack the windows in my Jeep. Great video.

What always blows my mind almost as much as the speed these planes are achieving with piston engines, is the speeds they are achieving at Reno Stead's altitude. It would also be interesting to get an actual reading of residual thrust from the exhaust.

Radial engines are dry sump. At low rpm the oil pump cannot keep the oil from building up in the engine.The last run up is to scavenge the oil from the sump. At least that is what it was for in the T-28 I flew in Navy flight school in the early '70s.

Amazing show of power and skill all rapped up in a short video. Question: I don't know anything about air racing engines, why do they power up after they come to a stop. Have my guesses but I'd like to hear it from someone who knows. My guess is that they're cleaning out any carbon and any engine contaminates from the idle in and to ensure oil pressure was up to fill the oil passages before shut down. Thanks for the post, Best Wishes n Blessings Keith

I would think that's what they're doing that for. I'm basing what I know on what they do for steam engines, which are radically different than these engines, but from what I know, if an engine is hard at work, regardless of what they run on, they'll do a relatively good job at keeping themselves clean.

get in a week early and go to the airfield, it's pretty much open to anyone to walk in and check everything out as they get the planes ready. They close the place up to ticket holders a day or two before the races is all, so worth the trip out to just look planes over and talk to crew.

Hats off to Steve Hinton for bringing this one back deadstick. I understand it is way more difficult to do than the PC pilots make out!! Awesome of Dad to ride herd too. I would like to see a longer course for them to fly so they can get wings level and really pour on the coals for a nice long straight away. But I can see why they have it like this for the fans. They're in a banking turn the whole race! Like Bristol vs Talladega Superspeedway.

SixStringLove Guy Actually they used to race on a larger course (9+ miles) but with all the encroachment of homes and businesses they had to slowly shorten the course. Plus with the crash in 2011 which took spectators lives, the FAA shortened it even more (thinking it would slow them down). But yes, it was awesome back in the day when they would drop down in the ‘valley of speed’ on the back side of the course with wings level and hall ass!!!

Have you ever wondered why the Sea Furies aren't the dominant planes in the unlimited class? They were faster stock than both the Mustang and the Bearcat, and yet these are the two planes that dominate their class.

Man, these people can fly a little bit. Watch Strega come in, at about 14:00. If that's not the most perfect smooth textbook landing you've ever seen... That, kiddies, is what it should look like, but almost never does.

Hoot has landed the Space Shuttle a few times, too. He's definitely a hell of a pilot.

Take planes that light and slick and with such low drag in what is pretty dry dense air at a reasonably high elevation and its pretty hard not to "nail" landings.

How many mustangs are there still running? Seems a shame to rebuild them into something besides the original fighter configuration.

Probably a couple hundred worldwide. They are the most common warbird remaining. At the end of WWII you could get a surplus bird for about 600$ with a full tank.. guns were removed of course..
