How to Hook Up Plastic Water Line to Refrigerator
In this video, Renos demonstrates how to connect a water line to a refrigerator and to the water supply. He uses polyethylene water line withe compression fittings to make the connection. He also shows you how to cut the pipe using three different tools, and suggests a fourth.

Always hook up at the supply first, then turn on stop to flush anything in supply out in bucket from sitting closed. Then hook to the fridge.

Thank you. I was married for 9 years and could not get my husband to install the hose. My new guy has been around for 8 years, and I cannot get him to install it, so after 17 years of waiting, and thinking about buying a new refridge, I am going to install it. The install kit has been in the closet all these years. If you want to get something done, do it yourself. At least you were kind enough to instruct me. I would say I have a lot of patience, but need a lesson how to choose better friends. Haha. God Bless you.

Just purchased a condo about 2 years ago. Tired of using ice tray's. I was told that the water line is already in the back of the fridge, I just needed to hook it up. I hooked it up today. Thanks so much for a simple DIY video. Nice hands (nails) by the way!

Older American homeowner. NEVER under any circumstances use a plastic line. Use a braided stainless steel hose. They come with 1/4 inch compression fitting already attached.

Sorry , but that copper sleeve is there to keep the line from collapsing. There should have been a small copper compression bead that goes on after the sleeve to compress the supply and inlet to the brass fitting.

You forgot a ferrule (looks like a brass ring) that goes over the hose and under the nut. When the nut is tightened the nut and union squeeze up against the ferrule causing a proper seal at that joint, connection. For some reason not all kits come with a ferrule so it has to be pucrhased separately. If no ferrule is used you have the very big probability there will be a water leak. This is especially true in homes where the incoming water pressure is high. I know of city houses that have 100 ps,i pressure coming from the city water feed. These high pressure homes are typically at the bottom of a hill.

You don't need pipe dope on a compression fitting. The nut compresses that ring around the tubing which then squeezes the tubing and seals between the bevels on the body and the nut. The pipe dope only makes a mess and does nothing to contribute to a seal.

Regarding the hose that you're using, what effect does it have on the taste of the water? I seem to have read that using copper was the better option because it doesn't make the water taste bad. Great video. Thanks.

I have never compared the two. However, after doing some quick searches, it seems that some people complain about a metallic taste when using copper.

Copper is anti microbial. It's better for that reason.

Never use metal ferrel on plastic, it cuts the plasticc. Also he use no ferrel on refrigerator side! This mess will leak for sure!

The kit you brought to this installation had a lengthy run of plastic line. It probably was for an installation where the source of water would be coming from the sink running through cabinets instead of from the box already mounted in the refrigerator cove. Excellent video.

You DO NOT need pipe dope on a compression fitting. It will do absolutely no good if a compression fitting is leaking because it will leak around the hose, not the threads.

Check that the connections are compatible and if so you should be able to attach the braided hose to the fitting on the back of the fridge. Make sure to put it on straight and not o get it cross-threaded.

That ice maker water line will blow off with a bit of pressure. Looks like the same one I purchased from Home Depot. Or if you accidentally pulled tubing a little too hard it will easily slip out.

@@HRC94602 I was having the same issues, the water pressure would blow the line off. So this is how I fixed it .. This guy was the only guy I saw the gold medal sleeve everyone else advised against it and to use the plastic piece so I ended up getting the compression screw with the little metal piece already on the inside theeeen there is a little brass dongle that goes inside the waterline. with the brass dongle and he brass sleeve, it made it tight enough not to pop out I pulled it several times to test cause usually I can pull it out with my hand but this time I couldn't so I connected it and prayed.. It's working so far but i'm keeping an eye on it. Just five mins of that water running would flood my kitchen!

Dude,hottest day of the year and I had the same package of line ,parts etc ,used utility knife oppened pkg up to notice I nicked 5 of the 10ft of hose ,did a dry fit on all the new line pressure tested it and what a butcher job @172 gallon water sprayed all over then called a plumber 90 bucks for 6 minutes .WORTH IT X 2 STOP MAKING VIDEOS PARDNAH,

You should us plastic compression rings (ferrules) on plastic tubing, NOT brass. Brass can damage/cut the plastic tube. I'm not sure why you didn't use a brass tube in the end that connects to the Oatey shut of valve but you should have. Lastly, thread sealant (or "pipe dope") should NOT be used on compression fittings. The water seal is NOT on the threads so the thread sealer will do nothing to seal water leaks. Leak free compression joints rely on appropriate alignment and tightening. Thread sealer may allow the nut to turn easier than without it and should NOT be used (especially in the amount you used).

I had my suspicions that this was not a professional install. Confirmed when you gobbled on enough pipe dope for 10 jobs. Then I seen the pliers; way too big and covered in pipe dope or paint or papermate.

Save yourself the mess this guy is going to end up having and just buy a good quality braided water hose with compression fittings. Also, use an adjustable wrench, not channellock pliers. Those pliers will chew up the fittings and cause more problems.

Skip the first 9 minutes if you know how to cut through a 1/4 in. plastic hose. After that, I don’t know what happened, I couldn’t take it anymore……Sorry.
