I always liked this style. I'm all for minimalism in your gear, especially if you have to wear it all day. Two ounces at 6:00 AM is about three pounds by 6:00 PM. Nice work on the refurbish. Best of Days.

Excellent info from Olin. The nice thing about them is the belt loop usually gives some room for adjustment, so you can tilt it forward or back depending on your preference.

Those Slim Jim holsters are nice! That red russet leather is pretty! You would get along great with Tom Czechansky, he is curator now of the Natural WW2 museum in N.O., but used to be curator of the Confederate museum and he owned a leather works making repro leather gear. Known him since I was a kid, probably misspelled his name though... Yeah you did good! 👍😊 Man I could make a meal out of those jerky sticks and Cheezits!

Hi, Santee. I am a leather worker these past 40 years. I have a military-style half-flap holster for my SAA, purchased from El Paso many years ago along with a garrison belt and Dyer box. I decided I wanted a bucket-style slim jim for my 1875 Remington, tooled in early fashion. That type of tooling is beyond my skill despite experience. I could only find two makers who did such work as done by Winchester & Main in S.F. after the Gold Rush. The most expert work was done by an artisan outside the U.S. I told him I wanted left-handed cross-draw, but he thought the terms were synonymous--- when I wanted left-handed cross-draw 45-degree angle. I should have been more clear because when the holster arrived it was straight-drop. The holster is an artistic masterpiece, but for me, a straight-drop is problematic--- unless I never sit down. Additionally, since the holster is a historic reproduction, it is stitched with linen. It appears the ones you worked were too: a thread that lacks durability. I use artificial sinew for everything, and absolute historical accuracy as to thread is inconsequential to me compared to durability. I entertained replacing the thread, but held off as I am reluctant to interfere with a work of art. After watching this video, I may give modifying my beautiful period holster a try after all. I'll have to take a close look at it. Maybe I could replace the belt loop and stitching at the same time. Or not--- as the belt loop contains a rivet. It would be bad to mess it up. And how about that video on Dyer boxes I requested a while ago? The garrison belt plus Dyer box are the lightest, fastest, and best way to go for Old West single-action carry. As far superior to those beastly cartridge-loop belts as slim jims are to heavy loop-style holsters.

Thanks again Santee & Co. When I was in the navy I usually carried a 1911a1 in a flap holster issued by the Gunner's Mates . When I was an MP I spent most of the time as a patrolman armed with a shotgun . But I served as a dispatcher for a while , and carried a 1911a1in an under the armpit tanker style holster . My officers would have changed me with destruction of government property if I had cut off the flaps of my issue holster . By the way , nice work on the restitching , adding the fringe , and the recoloring .

Another excellent video Santee! No sure this relates here, but not all slim jim holsters were worn as shown, not sure if it was just a rarity or more functional, of the holder was right handed than it was located on the left side at acute angle, but was more practical to wear it this way? But what ancestor research told me, you can tell who has conference in using the navy by looking at the holster, whether it has a top cover to protect the user and other people from those who are using it as showing rather than experience, which was more to liking of the rich northern state enlisted officers.

Very awesome and informative interesting video, I definitely learned a lot about the slim jim holster from the old west. I also got inspiration for my old West/wilderness inspired novel series I’m writing.

an OLD friend of ours years ago owned a 'jock-strap' holster made in San Francisco, it was MADE of very thick hide (buffalo??) and was lined with white calfskin, that showed thru a crazy pattern of piercings thru the thick outer hide... quite the show piece, would SO love to have known the history on it.....

Great job and well done on the video , I’m definitely going to to be adding old West holsters to my old West inspired novel today. In my books world the inhabitants will wear both old west frontier clothing as well as retro era clothing. There is one scene in my story where the inhabitants wear special velvet and silk outfits in honor of their holiday known as National Alpa Centennials day.

Your holster turned out real nice, Santee. I had one that I made by cutting off the flap. I have seen others that they left the flap on but cut a slit. They then passed the holster back through creating a Mexican loop holster. I carry my holsters for with butt forward. Slid to the front for cross draw or slid further back for a reverse draw or even a road agent spin draw. Check out American Outlaws for the road agent spin draw by my distant cousin, Frank James.

Here’s a small paragraph from my old West inspired novel: As Mercia Hawkins and Ayzria Elodie were thinking about what exactly the key of truth was, a disembodied telepathic voice rang out” the dwelling place of the key of truth lies deep within your subconscious, the two of you must confront the subconscious of your minds”. Then the voice told them”However please hurry, The olden ones are coming “. Soon after hearing that Ayzria asked” just who are you “. The voice answered “ I’m the angel of knowledge and guidance Emennadiel, I’m here to guide the two of you onto the right and true path known as the path of truth “. Upon knowing that Mercia and Ayzria looked at each other with confused looks on their faces. They shrugged their shoulders. Even though they didn’t quite understand the meaning of the angels words, the two of them agreed with the angel and accepted the beings guidance. Here’s a character paragraph: Emennadiel is the father of Àràgiel Numinàs, he looks after both his son and his sons friend from childhood Mercia Hawkins. Who lost his father Thomason during the Dheneb Rangers mission Operation Treasure back on July 20th 5950. Emennadiel acts as a father to Mercia. I hope you all really like these paragraphs from my book

At some point. If you are in the market, check out civil war sutlers. They have them. Those would have been sold as surplus and used in the Old West.
