I grind stumps professionally. I find that the biggest problem with rented units is that the teeth are dull which wastes a lot of time and effort. In general, dull teeth produce small wood chips and sharp teeth produce big wood chips (except on really hard wood). That 13 HP grinder would be good for bushes or small stumps (say 12 inches or smaller). I had one of that size back when I just started stump grinding. I could do bigger stumps with it but I dreaded anything over 24 inches in diameter. With sharp teeth, I usually expected a 24 inch stump to take about1 hour to grind. I might suggest a different grinding technique please. The usual grinding technique would be to start grinding in the dirt first, until we reached the desired depth of cut, and then inch forward in progressive passes till you've reached the other side of the stump. Regarding depth, we usually grind between 6 and 10 inches deep. Regarding pricing, I'd say that the first stump might be $100 but I'd expect to see a discount on other stumps done at the same time. You get an A for effort. God bless.

You are supposed to lock the left wheel with the lever and work it from side to side. Unlock move forward, lock it and rock it left and right.

And I've been intimidated by the number of stumps every time I call a rental company and ask what they think. This has definitely motivated me to get it done. I'll cut them down low with a box saw and pull the trigger on one of these bad boys. Thank you again

I thinking on the larger - taller stumps, you would need to use a chain saw & cut them lower to the ground. I thought you were to run the blade horizontal, as shaving of layers, till you got to the desired deepth. Like these kind of videos, more often, Taco!! Do take care. (Fl.)

had an Uncle who always dumped his charcoal embers in the center of the stumps took a while but eventually it did the job

I only used such machines a few times & was quite amazed how stumps literally melted away like butter every time. So my main conclusion here would be, so long as your blades aren't dull, the amount of time/effort involved on ANY given machine TOTALLY just depends on the hardness of the wood. I never seen walnut in my area but, I'm guessing its pretty damn hard, or at least that particular species. Or in other words, I must have just been lucky. 🤣

Enjoying the video. Something different from Taco Stacks! I had a professional come in to take out some small and large stumps last year. His large machine on tracks just cut and chopped through like butter. Done in 45 minutes. $400 plus tax. He advised that sawdust is not great for growing grass. I dug out the sawdust and replaced with topsoil. Looks like the rental machine had dull blades. Also, a fresh cut trunk may have been easier to get through. I had a live apple tree to take down this spring. Advertised the applewood for free (for people with smokers), but conditions were all branches to be hauled away and trunk taken out. Got an industrious young fellow with 4 x 4 truck and chainsaw. Hooked up a chain to tree stump and with lots of digging and chopping got it done. Saved $$$ by not having to call stump grinder again.😊

What you need to do to the big ones is drill a few holes in each one then put some root rott in them a couple months before you do the stump grinding it'll be much easier

The correct way to use a stump grinder like that is to come up to the edge of stump, put the brake on and then move it in a swinging motion until you aren't cutting. Then move it forward a small amount and repeat the process

It's obvious they didn't show you how to use it properly. First you start at the edge towards you and do a side to side motion. The blade will dull out fast once you start hitting dirt or rocks grown into the stump. Cut until flush with the ground and move to the next one. Then come back and do the below grade and I do about 4 inches down. Plus you are cutting very hard wood so of course its going to take time. And it's just plain hard work Taco.

Husband did some stump grinding earlier in the spring, we rented the smaller one from True Value but it was broken when they came to deliver and we got the heavy duty one for the same price! We had one stump about the size of your large one and it worked well. Look into your local True Value...I am in Harrisburg PA and we have them all over.

Sometimes it pays in the long term to let professionals do it. They have the proper equipment and the expertise. You are a master at your trade, stick to it and you will go far. Enjoyed the adventure, as they say variety is the spice of life. 🙋‍♀️

I dug around the two large stumps in my yard, then used a combination of $40 harbor freight electric chainsaw, and $20 HF Reciprocating Saw. It took around a week of just an hour here and there, mostly due to rain and clearing mud. But I wanted the root ball gone so I didn't run into other problems later since I was making that location into a flower bed. Even if you don't want that much, consider just digging around the trunk about 6" down, far enough out to get clearance, and then just cutting it horizontally with a standard chainsaw at that depth. Then just fill the dirt back in. Might take you a bit longer, but you don't really have to have a grinder just to get it below dirt level.

Neighbors had a oak tree fall. 4ft the stump went down in the ground. Saws, Bobcat and burning still have not removed it.

My grandfather woukd build an enclosure around the stump of scrap metal and fill it with kindling and light it. Then boost it with an old vacuum blowing out. Very effective and fun.

Interesting stuff. We just got someone to come out and split 4 trees worth of logs for us. It took him 7 hours with a log splitter!

You really want to run an arc into the stump cutting with the front of the grinder wheel/blade not the bottom, although grinders do vary somewhat. I rented and with zero experience was able to grind out two large stumps to 8-10 inches below ground level in a couple of hours including pickup and return. By renting and doing it myself, I saved over half the cost of hiring it done. Later I found out a service will cut maybe to 3-4 inches below ground level, which is not always enough to plant over,. Grinders shake a lot and it will be a workout. It helps to dig out around the stump prior renting the grinder, especially if cutting well below ground level. The stump should be cut as low to the ground as possible to minimize grinding time. I was able to skip grinding several other stumps because I had them cut low enough they could be mowed over until the stump rots and can be removed. To make a stump rot out faster, cut into it with a saw and/or drill holes in the top and sides to allow moisture and bugs to get at the wood faster (you can chisel or chip the bark off down to ground level also). I will definitely rent a stump grinder again when I have a need.

Wonder if you just dig ground away from stump , cut it below the surface and cover it back over would work?

Hey Taco - that was interesting. Have you thought about burning the stumps out - obviously not the ones by the buildings, but the ones out in the open. We used to build a fire round them and let them burn right down - worked a treat - just a thought. :-) Keep living the dream.

Not sure I would go this route but was interesting... My son just uses the chainsaw and makes several cuts down in the stump .. then uses a pick axe n knocks the pieces off....As long as the mower can go over it I'm happy :)

I've seen videos that the blade is applied to the stump side to side, slowly moving across the stump, not with straight cuts across the width of the wood.

I think that one is for smaller trees...even at that they should have told you that. Did they say they had a larger than that? I had 40 stumps ground up several yrs ago and the one they used was a lot larger.

This may help on your stumps. Find someone that buys wood or cuts wood ask them if they own a stumpgrinder, if they do they probably would charge you a lot less than home depot or Lowes. You would get a better deal. I had a huge tree in my backyard and it had electrical lines around it, and cable line. He took the tree down cut up the branches took the tree away and only charged me $500.00 when everyone else was going to charge me $900.00 and they did a good job. Then I just used the stump as a plant stand until it fell apart after a few years.

I have watched a bunch of stump grinding and never seen anyone do it the way you're doing it.

WOW! You can rent a ground tamper from HD also...tamp the ground down where you ground the stump, it compacts the ground. It's like 10 bucks a day. Or check Fb market place, that's where I found mine....they also sell them new for around 40 bucks at HD....makes it easier when you run the mower over the ground...Had to do that when I took out palm trees.

I have had professionals grind stumps for me before. They use much more powerful, much more heavy duty equipment than you rented. And the ground out the whole stump (so much more deeply than you achieved). The Home Depot equipment seems to only be useful for smaller stumps and soft wood stumps

I bought one like that, used it a lot as did my son and son in law at their places. Still like new and has paid for itself. Teeth are still sharp and it came with a spare set. The teeth can be sharpened and yours was really dull by the way it sounded and cut. Got 10 acres and love that machine. Cost me about $1500. several years ago.

I have this baby stumper In my stump grinder fleet its good for small bush stumps or when you can’t get anything else In and my big stump grinders like rg100x have 21 inches of grinding depth below grade the stump is usually totally gone by the time we are done

I rented a new stump grinder several years back, it was much larger than the one you rented. No way two people could pick it up! It walked up onto a trailer that they provided. The stumps I had, some 15 of them were all aged several years, and it only took me about 6 hours to do all of them. The grinder I used produced 1 inch and larger chips, not dust like yours, so I suspect the teeth were a bit dull, the unit a bit light weight, and the wood not succinctly aged to grind easily. I did not rent from Home Depot but from an industrial machinery company!

Hi, like other people have said make sure that the teeth are sharp. But if you use the front bottom of the cutting wheel to cut the stump. Between 3 o'clock and 5 o'clock the machine will work more effectively.

We just had five stumps ground about that size and he threw in two smaller ones for 125.00 total. Find an actual stump grinder guy...that's all ours does. He goes eight or more inches down,...lots of wonderful sawdust!! He was here under 90 min.

Something didn't seem quite right about that grinder. It seems as though you could put it down further, maybe the blade. The back and forth motion would work better then just going forward and back. That stump that is high could be cut with a chainsaw and lowered to a better level to grind, at least that's what I did to one I had in the yard. I'd forget about it for now, and put some Root Rot on them and basically, after time, you can pull them apart and if you want, rent that thing again and it will take minutes per stump.

They have stuff you can pour on it. Called stump killer. You can also dig around it. Then take a chain saw below the ground level and chop up that way

I rented one from Taylor Rental, it had to be towed with our SUV we live in the country. It did a nice job. I think the one you have might be for city dwellers not county dwellers. Get the one you tow behind a vehicle.

always a good idea to have some 2x4 for ramps, with you when you are transporting mowers or in this case a stump grinder. Save your back some. But you kids do it for now, but keep it in mind.

Methinks you had a pretty dull blade on that stump "grinder"....

No help now but we cut 2 to 3 foot above ground and dig the stump out when we take the tree out. Do the soft woods and small first. Walnut is very hard and will blunt the blades.

Renting a mini excavator with a ripper tooth would be the way to go, especially with the stumps so close to the house. I knocked out 9 stumps today with a similar stump grinder man what a workout lol, also took out 12 last year by hand with a shovel and pick axe. It’s a little more time consuming because you have to dig all the way around and about 2 feet down to get under each stump so you can chop the roots off but it’s definitely the cheapest option.

Stump grinding is a skill that is not easily learned in one day. I would say you met the challenge pretty well. *Now with a leaf blower and/or rake remove 100% of the sawdust which will not help grass.

You may have to use a hatchet on the ones that are below the level on your yard. Stumps are a pain and the guy could not do the ones in my backyard because the gate is not wide enough for the grinder to fit through.
