Rents rise in Scotland's biggest cities as around half of Scots struggle with housing costs

Most of us take having a roof over our heads for granted but tonight there's more evidence paying for it is getting harder. The charity Shelter Scotland has found around half of us struggle with our housing costs. In some areas rent can be more than a thousand pounds a month.
The solutions aren't as clear cut as they might seem. Some say controls on rents would help, but that could also see landlords sell up. More social housing is also seen as a solution but campaigners say not enough are being built. Here's our senior reporter Gordon Chree.

I lived in Glasgow years ago ( over 30 years) and housing was expensive then. I ended up renting a room in a large flat sharing with 4 other people.

It was crazy cheap to buy then. I lived in Glasgow in 1991 and friends of mine at uni banded together and bought a huge flat in the west end for 40K. It was a stunning place.

Here in germany we have kind of a rent control. Meaning in 3 yrs rent can only increase by 15 % if you get a new tenannt. But of course there are ways how to solve that problem. To rent out only for a certain time or to rent out furnished flats (its not common over here, theres usually only a kitchen included) and the smartest way is to modernise/renovate the building and/or the flat, cause then its excluded from rent control. And how the modernisation has to be is on another paper, it just has to be more energy sufficient (in a Environmental way or whatever you call that)

most importantly scotland needs more social housing to be built. Rent control does not work

If you can’t afford the rent in Scotland what currently has the lowest rent in the U.K. on average use need to to take a step back and ask yourself why? Why is your life so bad

The Scots economy hasn't been doing well but rents are now high. It just doesn't make sense. I feel for the people who live in these high-rent areas.

I hope the rents come down soon. Or the wages triple!

Why don’t you go to university to get a better job? Instead of just hoping 🤞 for your wages to be put up lol

Ok. The SNP are not going to plan to build more social housing. They could not organise the building of two ferries. The money is just not there. I am a small time landlord, and my fellow landlords are leaving the market in droves. As a landlord, you are faced with a 6% stamp duty for buying a second property, you are then charged more to fund the BTL mortgage, you are taxed at turnover , and then get taxed virtually on any profit you make when you sell. The intro of rent control will almost be the end.

rent controls will make things worse!!! just raise interest rates and bingo the problem solves itself! politicians wreck everything when they think they can control markets

I think it’s still possible to buy a house it’s just been made harder and this man in this video is a perfect example that people don’t understand how hard you’ll have to try

People think it should be possible to still ‘buy a house when you work a regular job’ or just because they went to university (that’s my favourite one😂) but no

At what point do they realise that rent controls will decrease supply (less landlords) and so make the whole thing even worse??
