How To Become an Air Traffic Controller in the Philippines

Lately, I have been receiving emails regarding how to become an ATC (Air Traffic Controller) in the Philippines. Well, let me tell you something about the nature of the job of an air traffic controller. You see, they are the guiding voices of the sky. They instruct pilots when and where to descend, climb, commence a left or right turn, and other specific instructions. They are responsible for handling air traffic in a safe, orderly, and in an expeditious way.
Here in the Philippines, Air Traffic Controllers work under the Philippine government, specifically at the Air Traffic Service of the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines or CAAP.

Woah thanks for this, it's safe to say that I'm not that bad in speaking in english even if I didn't grow up in a rich household that's always speaking in english. Before I watched this video, I really didn't know how I could use that skill, I mean I can rap Eminem's rap god but for me, being a rapper is not practical. But you said that this job requires English proficiency and a lot of memorization which I think my brain has the capacity to handle. Plus, it pays good money even if it means I'm never gonna be able to join my family on Christmas eve and New year's celebration. But the thought of bringing families to their homes is 💗. Thanks again, wish me luck in the future. 🙏

I've been wishing to be one of the future Air Traffic Control Officers. But my concern is that I don't have the resources and savings knowing the training will be for about 10 months. I heard that the previous batches have scholarship before and it saddens me that CAAP didn't do that anymore.

Hi sir, ask ko lang po sana if required po ba ang 20/20 without corretive lenses? Or pwede naman po ang 20/20 with corrective lenses? Its just that the information online is very lacking and conflicting with some of them saying no corrective lenses allowed, and some saying it is allowed

Same in the Traffic Management field of specialization. They think that Traffic Engineer/Manager is the same as Traffic Enforcer/Aides. That is why it's hard to find a decent offer here. But if you look at other countries (e.g. Australia, NZ, USA, Canada), this field of specialization is in demand. You just have to find a way to get to those countries.

Hi Renz, at 04:32 - why is the marital status of an applicant limited to only being single? Is a married applicant (below age 26) suddenly not mentally and psychologically fit to perform the job in the utmost responsible way? There's two things that quite don't make sense, the civil status and age limitation. A 35 year old applicant with 15 years experience has no chance of getting re-hired as an ATC controller when switching airports? Appreciate your feedback into this 😉

I also want to become an ATC. I am currently taking Civil Engineering, and I have a few questions regarding the requirements. Do you need to have job experience with the degree you take in college? One of the requirements said that "I have not been dishonorably separated from government or private service" and that after I graduate and pass the qualifying examination, I can just go straight to the ATC training.

Probably, but regardless of your course, everyone has an equal footing at the beginning of the training. I finished a degree in Biology, and it didn’t have a bearing when I took the ATC training.

Depende po yun sa facility na kakalagyan niyo. Since ang magdedecide ng schedule niyo is yung FIC (Facility in-charge) ng facility na kakalagyan ninyo.

About qualifications. Why is a college degree required? In Canada and the US, only Grade 12 (high school) completion is the education required.

It really depends on the State/country. In Singapore, CAAS also requires the applicants to be at least a college graduate before applying for an ATC work.

@@renzybenzy Hi Renz, I read that in the UK education is not a determining factor in hiring ATCs. Apparently it's a job where either "you can do it or you can't." As I said, in Canada and the US, the minimum educational requirement is a Grade 12 education. And ATCs make good money. I'm sure you guys in the Philippines do too. My son's best buddy is an ATC in Vancouver and according to him, ATCs during their first 4 years make an average annual salary of $97,000 (includes bonuses and overtime pay). But he says it's a high stress job, and you can't even slow down and take it easy, unlike other office jobs. By the way, I know an ATC working with you at NAIA, Che Avengoza. Say hi for me. Thanks.

@@bertquibuyen2500 yeah, I am aware of that. Like I said, it all depends on the country/state where you apply. The only thing that baffles me so much is here, applicants shall have a 20-20 vision. Uuhhhmmm, just because you have a perfect eyesight doesn’t mean you’ll automatically have a good traffic picture and a superb 3D spatial skills.

ATMO is just a generic term, can be a communicator (one who works for non-atc related work), and an air traffic controller (one who actually handles live air traffic).

Everyone undergoes the qualifying exam, even if you work as an OJT in CAAP.

Hello, if I were you, choose a course that suits your interests apart from aviation or ATC for that matter. With that, you'll have a plan B. I finished a degree in Biology before I entered the ATC training 8 yrs ago. So, your college degree doesn't really matter. What matters most is you finished a degree in college.

Really depends. In our batch (CATS 6), we started at 89, but only 52 finished the training.

wouldn't there be less people dropping out or failing the training if they learn it for four years rather than one year or less? not being agressive here, i just don't get it? a quick search in google showed me that other countries do it like that, like a college degree or something. It seems like a pretty good job that needs more people but it's not well known and the training sounds kinda scary.

elio FAA (USA), AirServices Australia, NAVCANADA, NATS (UK), Airways (NZ), and others conduct ATC trainings for at least 12 months. While there are courses available for ATC, it is usually not necessary to get one for you to become an ATC. The one year training is already enough, and with this kind of job, everyone’s expected to be in their A-game. Otherwise, you’re out.

@@bielbascon7348 Tbh, when there are too many arrivals and departures at a given hour, plus when the weather is deteriorating, and when a flight suddenly declares an emergency. it sometimes happens in just one shift! but we're all trained and equipped to deal with this kind of scenario. Also, we're not allowed to take leaves during Christmas and new year.

@@renzybenzyTrue sir. I took my exam last Sunday and I feel lost. Examination is not so hard nor easy. A piece of advice is to review the basics because it looks like a career achievement test in high school.
