Repair holes in Interior ceilings.
FYI, we are located in the Oakland, Berkeley CA, area.
Howdy Folks, all the basic tools we use and recommend on Amazon's website.
www.stuccoplastering.com/tools/
Live long and plaster hats, shirts, and other cool stuff. www.livelongandplaster.com/
Kirk Giordano Plastering Inc.
I’m using what is called sheetrock or drywall compound.
This plastering Video is for those who wish to understand how patching plaster walls or ceilings is accomplished and what gypsum-based drywall compound products are available to work with.
This video shows one of the most popular gypsum-based fast-set compounds available.
FYI, this ceiling was an old cedar wood lath originally.
This wood lath was used from 1890 to about 1940 on millions of homes throughout the country.
Jason systematically pulled the buckling plaster off.
He then painted the wood lath with a bonding agent to give the old wood some necessary adhering abilities while removing dust, dirt, or grime.
He then screwed on some 3.4 metal mesh for extra strength.
We then just mudded it with a drywall compound. I have never seen any drywall compound shrink, personally.
What folks may be referring to when compounds or any types of cement are compromised, like being mixed in dirty buckets or with a filthy paddle or old compounds left in bags for long periods, is that mix can set in seconds or not for hours.
There are many more; if you are at HD or Lowe's, there are two drywall compounds to choose from.
USG Easy Sand Joint Compound VS Westpac’s Fast Set Joint Compound, I have to say there is no difference in spreading them, as I can’t tell either one from the other if I didn’t know which product it was.
Or how about in this video, joint Compounds, Westpac Fast Set, or USG Easy Sand: • Joint compound for dry... At 2:26, I show the two types of gypsums, Westpac and easy sand.
Does anyone want to see some hawk and trowel handling? Click the video below.
• Plaster with Structo-L... interior plastering, the spinning Plaster hawk.
Lastly, we have recorded a couple of videos out of the hundreds if you have a bigger problem.

Always impressive to watch guys doing that. When I was kid around 76’ my dad had me on a job with him and these 3 old Scottish guys were floating walls and ceilings on stilts. I asked them how long they had to wait to sand. They looked at me like I was an idiot followed by the comment, “Son, we’re f$@&ing craftsmen, we don’t sand anything”.

Hey man nice shot! This stuff is super helpful, lots of guys show off the standard methods, but the real craft is in working out all those small problems that you may encounter. Even on a good day! I used to revive wet surfaces with a spongeboard, but that gets messy fast, now I like to use a plant mister, these things are super handy, you pump it up, set the nozzle to fine mist and spray exactly the amount of water you need at exactly the right area, then trowel or darby the surface smooth.

These videos have been incredibly helpful. Im renovating an old house, not my firat time but i have come to appreciate using period materials and techniques to make homogeneous finishes, most evident in plaster vs sheetrock. I have found in previous situations that a sheetrock patch is often not a great match on thickness, it takes paint differently, sounds hollow and even feels different. Having been at it for 3 day straight my shouldnt is happy its the weekend. Have a great day! Btw, i need to get one of those scoops, using a 6" trowel stinks. ;)

I blew out part of a closet wall and a small channel for an electrical wire to go to a new switch and receptacle. The plaster was thick, so I patched part of it with ⅝” fire block drywall, and patched the channel with new lathe. I coated it all with quikcrete bonding agent and covered the whole thing with Structolite. Finished it with Easy Sand 45, made a few small patches with Plus 3. It’s the smoothest part of the bedroom now. All the confidence I have came from watching Kirk’s videos. Thanks, Kirk.

Been plastering full time since graduating Penn State in 1980, and you gotta know, all those summers since I was like 12 years old. Just got home this week after 30 days in the hospital with covid. Looking at 3 to 6 months to get my lungs back right. Too much time with no income to carry expenses, so, gotta close. Hello, my friend. Your question does not bother me in the least to give my opinion. Why would it? Different stucco has different PSI strengths. Traditional stucco has a strength of 1,600 PSI. However, if I were trying to stop a bullet from going through a wall, I would apply Eisenwall, which has a PSI strength of 4,800 PSI.💃

When I used to plaster for NYCHA I used to rebuild walls from scratch first we started with Chanel iron fastening the ceiling runner tried in with wire cross rode's then tyied wire lath and scratch coated the lath using an accelerant so we can Brown coat and float the wall to apply the finished coat with lime and plaster we would make a ring of lime on a piece of plywood put water in the middle and then a little retader so it would give you time to work with it so you would be able to do a 8×14 sized wall but don't forget the base would be set when you did the brown coat i noticed you didn't use a corner flote my guess is it was just a piece of cieiling and not a corner please don't take it personal at all i love watching your videos I think you do awesome work when we toke the test they made us do a 2×2 piece of ceiling and 2×2 piece of walls in the corners so they would be able to see all the angles and would have to use a slick to pull the XS off the walls but curt your work is amazing I would love to do a job with you any day of the week!!!!@

Hey Uncle Kirk Q: why does 20 minute mud change to 10 minute mud when you put the 2 bags into the one bucket.? Australia 🇦🇺👍🏻🧐
@StuccoPlastering
@StuccoPlastering 2 жыл бұрын
Photo Doc, kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b6yegpaazLXPf58.html/ you want the truth? you can't handle the truth. Often mixing separate bags even of the same timed set, can accelerate them. with us to try and mix a full five gallons of any set time compound, it takes longer to spin it, that extra time sometimes either retards it or accelerates it. To mix one at a time then put the next bag in the same bucket now that mixing twice. The fact is I can do one bucket at a time and not worry about it setting but where's the fun in that, I want excitement, of knowing I might have to work my ass off or lose the mud.🍾

Spot on about the larger size knife/trowel I am curious to know what you think about combining different set rates to control dry times I recently tried to use exclusively 5 minute mud to skim stage 5 finish a house but it’s not really efficient to mix that much at once I am thinking of trying two to one 20 to 5 minute to see if that kicks off faster? Thoughts on that?
@StuccoPlastering
@StuccoPlastering 2 жыл бұрын
Howdy Cool breeze, I would not advise doing that, you want a 10 minute mud as five sets to fast and 20 takes to long, sound like the story of the three bears. Mix the 20 minute mud in a dirty buck, it wall set much faster. Or do as we do, relax while it sets and work on other things.🤔

I have a very large (4'x6'?) area of my kitchen ceiling where someone glued up some panels to the plaster and eventually they started to warp and down came my ceiling, plaster and all. I'm so happy to find your channel to help me learn how to repair it. My biggest issue is how to get the patched area level with the rest of the ceiling and avoid any high or low spots. Do you have any videos that show how to do that? I've looked through your playlists and you have so many videos I don't know where to start!

Hi Criste, researches online, as a rule, you will get many conflicting answers, Like mine here. My answer is I can use either and get the job done, whether it's a quarter-inch thick or an inch thick. However, explaining this would take longer, and many folks would become confused, as it's not recommended. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i76Gpaeoyc6XgqM.html/ just explain a basecoat. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Y8tdZpBn3MmUnok.html/ just a finish coat. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gdKUq7J1s9bWgGQ.html/ typical both coats for maximum strength, lime plastering kitchens. Once more, I'll describe it differently at the risk of repeating myself. Do you understand what veneer means? It simply means a thin application. It has nothing to do with either a basecoat or a finish coat. But for the best results for schools and hospitals, for example, You apply a basecoat, this has sand and adheres well to the wall when properly prepared and provides strength as it has sand in it. When any lime basecoat drys, now you can use a finish coat. Most finish coats such as Diamond or Imperial have little to no sand. If it does have sand, it's silica-like or like talcum powder, which is very fine. Diamond and Imperial are both made by USG. I prefer the Imperial lime finishes as it has a bit more lime in it. This means I can bring it back to life when applied if I wet it before it drys entirely and makes it smoother if I choose to.

Hi! Might be an ignorant question, but will this hold as well as a layer of bonding and 1/2 layers of plaster across the whole/half the ceiling? Reason i am asking is that we had a leak, with same situation leaving wooden lath exposed (1.5mx1m) in our living room. We chose to put bonding undercoat on half the wall and then plaster over that. It made me wonder, should we have just put up the metal mesh and put lime mortar instead? This would have been quicker and more cost effective for sure, but would it have been as strong as the method we used? Thanks

@@StuccoPlastering Kirk- Seriously, 20 minute mud put on that thick is not ready to finish in less than an hour. I also question not using any type of reinforcing tape where it meets that older plaster? If it were actual plaster you were using not a problem. No bonding agent of any kind? We all have our ways of doing things but I just have a hard time imagining that there will not be adhesion and cracking issues in a short amount of time. That mesh is flexible and that mud is nowhere near as hard as regular plaster? You are doing some hybrid thing here between plastering and drywall. I would think installing drywall or other board and finishing would be preferable to this very heavy amount of material. I guess it works for you.

Here in Canada, we have Hamilton 20 minute “hot” mud in the bag in powdered form. I mix it up with a clean pail and clean tools, mix it into a slurry with clean water then gradually add more 20 min to the mix. Every time it gets rock hard in about 3-5 minutes no matter what.
@StuccoPlastering

Howdy, D Dude, that means your buckets or drill paddles are filthy; either clean them to stop the acceleration of a 20-minute med or buy 40 minty mud. Dirty buckets and or paddle accelerate any joint compounds. Plus, when mixing, make certain your drill paddles are already wet, that means, don't mix with a dry paddle. Now you know.😉
@ronaldwinkler361
@ronaldwinkler361 Жыл бұрын
Over mixing will heat up mud and set faster. Try this experiment, mix a bag of 40 to your liking, wait 5 minutes and remix it. That mud will be set in 10 minutes or less after second mix. Don't over mix. Fill water to top of paddle, remove paddle from water add one bag of dry mix and that will be close to consistency you want Small amount of water will be needed afterwards.

I could have also smoothed it out faster and smoother too, as the technique with that stick stuff is to wet trowel it. however, I am proving a point to the masses with this video, Type in Structo-lite, I have many videos explaining it too.
