• Stucco walls with lime... How we plastered this wall with Kemset plaster:
I had to use restraint to keep butchers out of the title, which would have been negative.
Jason and I do prefer to stay positive if possible.
However, Jason and I have recently seen many windows installed or “butchered” in the last 6 months.
I’m wondering why? Are so many in such a hurry that they are unable or unwilling to install flashings and break out correctly?
Things that make you go, hmmm...
The best window installation company I have yet to witness in 2021 is “Cal Coast Window and Doors,” located in Pleasanton.”
Their number is 925-398-8184.

Back to reality, this video repair went better than expected, as we found no wood rot.
I will include a couple of videos that show how to install windows properly and another of why it’s best to use skill rather than muscle when breaking out the edges to allow, if possible, at least 3 inches of existing paper and stucco netting. And a third as to saw cutting the stucco to install. The window.
By the way, you or any window installer leave three inches of paper for proper waterproofing.
Leaving an inch to three of existing stucco netting is to ovoid stucco cracking from the new to existing stucco.
I will also include a simple saw-cut window as it was easier to install. However, it was done by a homeowner, not a professional.
A homeowner might do this, as they don’t know. Still, when a professional window installer does it, most stucco contractors will double their price if they fix another man’s inability to install correctly.
If they are unable or unwilling, the homeowner pays the price for them saw-cutting the stucco, installing a window, and running to their truck to beat the traffic home.
However, if they informed you they plan to saw-cut the stucco and install new windows, you know ahead of time.
• Waterproofing new wind... Install and waterproof new Marvin windows.
• Lath or waterproofing ... Correct break-out for Windows.
• Stucco around a new wi... Saw-cutting stucco to install window.

Kirk when I first started caulking and waterproofing when I was a teenager ( over 40 tears ago) I was working with my dad and he told the window installer he was installing the window wrong. The installer said “ I’ve been installing windows for 10 years” My dad replied “ and I’ve been fixing them for 20” keep making the videos. There is far too many videos on how to do it wrong. It is refreshing seeing someone that actually understands construction.

@@StuccoPlastering I just watched a video where the person was showing how to fix a leaky window by tearing out the Sheetrock and caulking the window to the backside of the sheathing from the inside.🤣🤣🤣. The problem is for every video like yours that is done right there are 100 of guys like that with zero understanding of construction and the building envelope..again keep making the videos maybe you can keep a homeowner from making a very expensive mistake.

This is my concern with paying someone, seems like the work is half done where "I was told this way" but conceptually they don't understand WHY it's done a certain way. I think that's a large reason for homeowners spending hours on youtube. Like fixing your car, no one fixes your car better than you. Similar principle when it's so hard to find reliable quality work. We can't all clone a Giordano for good work near us.

Kirk, this video is so timely for me. Trying to find someone to replace a leaking window can be so difficult. I asked a window replacement company in Stockton that's been around for 68 years who could do this job and they replied they did not know anyone. Sixty-eight years in business and they knew no one! Maybe I need to find a stucco guy instead of a window guy. Appreciate all the knowledge you share.

There are few places that really train installers now days. Contractors just throw unqualified workers on a job usually with bad results. With the ease of transitioning to other work, there just aren't a lot of people interested in doing the heavy, dangerous work of a window installer. IF there was training, better pay and benefits that might turn around but contracting is the wild west.

I'm shocked that this is happening. I've installed hundreds of windows around the bay area, mostly Oakland and Berkeley and the flashing is not that complicated. You essentially want to sandwich the flange in straight sticky flashing. Bottom both sticky and non, so you can have building paper tuck under. Silicone and install window and use sticky flash over nail strip on the sides and top. Only thing that I would consider is whether or not to cover the bottom nail strip. Some window manufacturers don't like that and want the nail strip exposed.

I've been in the window business over twenty years in texas.. Most times we walk away from stucco jobs with window installs. The proper way to install windows in stucco Is not to cut apart all the stucco on the outside. The glass should be removed sashes.Meeting real but the frame should be left in the wall.. You then install a new window inside the old window frame with a stucco fin.. This way the stucco is not damaged.. The way you're doing it can be done but it's very very costly and more expensive..

Great video, thanks for posting. Also, funny you should mention how cold it is during the summer in San Francisco. I was working in the area one summer, got a weekend off and told a friend I was going down the next morning to take pictures of the sea lions at pier 39. He told me to bring a warm coat because it was going to be cold. Like an idiot I didn't bring one and it was freaking cold like my friend had warned me. Discovered one of the shops down at the pier doing a brisk business selling $35 coats for $100. Yeah, I bought one at that price and was happy about it too. Lesson learned.

"...Put in improperly by professionals". In my experience, there is always a professional who knows what to do at a given company - there is not always one managing or on the crew performing the work for any given job. Hi Kirk - your videos are very informative. I do feel the pain and anguish of those homeowners that are unable to find the right individual to install their windows. I just bought a 1988 built home in southern California. The house is in good condition but nothing was ever done. I want to give it a shot at fixing many things in the home. I consider myself handy, however, there are things that are more complicated than others and may require an actual "expert". Finding an actual "expert" for a reasonable cost in CA is the biggest challenge of them all! Anyhow, my windows are original to the home and therefore need some strong TLC (replacement is the best word here). The cost of window replacement is upwards to the 15K. My home is stucco and there aren't many videos of people changing windows of stucco homes. I want to try doing it one window at a time to see if it is possible. Do you have any suggestions on how to go about? I did not see any videos of you actually changing a window on stucco. The couple of videos I saw, they made it look quite simple and the videos are over 10 year old. Any thoughts, it'll be greatly appreciated. Thanks

One thing about houses in America is the flimsy quality of even the most expensive ones. Houses are built literally like a house of cards. Weak beams, plywood, flimsy insulation, flimsy siding and roofing that either blows off in high winds or just rots away after a few years. It's really no wonder that come tornado or hurricane season, houses are literally ripped off of their foundations and tossed into the air. why aren’t they built with brick like here in the uk.

Morning Steve, I have seen the home of the above quality and below. We get earthquakes here, but no hurricanes or tornados. If we did get a hurricane, no doubt this house would stay intact. I have applied for 30, and 50-year roofs before. Clay and concrete roof tiles can sustain winds in excess of 125 miles per hour that would strip off most other roofing materials. Me, I'm just a stucco dude. Not a builder of homes.

My house that I recently stuccoed had old windows where the frame was essentially just one by’s. I couldn’t find any info on how to properly flash them, as most windows have those flanges on the edges that sit flush with the wall. I basically just put the flashing tape in the center of the wood of the window frames. Hope I did that correctly.

Morning Happy Dude, there are many ways to skin a cat. Anyone who did not install a window correctly, hopefully, will find out with the first notable rainfall. If it takes ten years to see water intrusion, you can bet there will be plenty of costs to remove all the rotted wood and new windows. The interior damage may be sheetrock, carpets, insulation, and such. This is just materials. The mold inhaled from the moister or water damage is much worse than the cost to replace. This is why we sometimes, we have to decline some jobs as they are too far gone and need a general contractor and not a stucco contractor.🤔

And for the most part we only use moist stop caulking as well as peel and stick. Everything else’s from our experience only has a 15 year to 30 year warranty. I can’t say enough of the amount of homes that were built post 2k but once you chip out windows. The water proofing is fragile. We don’t install windows. We just fix them. I had to pull the wood trim from around my windows and found the guy just cut out the stucco a bit more than the nailing fin and shoved it in there. Miracle though he removed the lath but didn't damage the paper around or under the fin. Then, covered the fin with 1x2 then put wood trim over it and caulked around the top and sides. Looks like some water did get in at the bottom between the stucco and paper slightly but not in the house. Any suggestions on a fix, Kirk?

Hello Commander, you can have him back to correct his work? This is what we are morally obligated to do! If he opens it and does not understand as an expert how to put it back together, it's on him to remove and correct. Do him a favor and allow him to learn by his mistakes.🕵🏼

@@StuccoPlastering Hi Kirk, I agree that is the first and right thing to do but they were installed over 10 years ago, so I don't think he would be responsive. But, thanks to your videos, I can handle it myself anyway. Hey, I even bought some tools off your Amazon link. And I saw one of your other videos that answered the question. I've got the stucco broken out around, lath peeled back, got adhesive flashing, picking up the rest of materials tomorrow. One question though-should I put a sill at the bottom of the window? Install over the lath and stucco around? Thanks for your reply. Cheers!

I flash the bottom with the bitumen/bitchethane. It's sticky. I will wrap up the sides 2 or 3 inches wrapping it into the sill. Then install the window the flash the sides with the same product then the top overlapping the 2 verticals that I just did. Kirk. Does the window frame touch bare wood or does the window sit on top of the paper? Another question. Is it the stucco guys responsibility to fix the paper? How far away from the window does the stucco need to be removed. I prefer to replace windows and have the stucco fixed versus using ugly ass retrofit windows.
@StuccoPlastering
@StuccoPlastering 2 жыл бұрын
Howdy Travis, it's a cardinal sin to place any flanged window directly on the wood. Whether it's plywood or, as in the old days, against the studs. A paper or a peel and stick membrane should be placed on first. Preferably at least 6 inches in width. How far to break out from the window depends on the condition of the paper and wire. The minimum is about at the very least four to six inches, as the new membrane has to overlap the existing paper, and the new stucco netting must also tie into the existing or crisscross it so there will be no perimeter crack.👍

Hi Kirk, great videos! We have leaking windows in our 1992 built HOA, the originally installed over 30 years ago windows are of poor quality. Some of those original windows that had been leaking for over 20 years were replaced recently (retrofit windows, sliders and custom full frame radial windows) and continue to leak. There are suggestions to do destructive water test the windows and walls to find the sources of the leaks (the roof has been re-coverd this year with a new layer.). But many vendors suggest to caulk the windows and paint the stucco with elastomeric paint to avoid getting into potentially costly repairs if damage is discovered. Is that at all a sound, more affordable option to breaking the stucco and changing the paper/correcting installation mistakes? And if we do the destructive test is there a way to see from the inside if the windows were installed incorrectly or if the issue is deteriorated paper or both? Is providing proper flashing on a retrofit window a part of the job of the window installer?
@StuccoPlastering
@StuccoPlastering 11 ай бұрын
Good evening sounds like a mess there, retrofits are usually windows that just insert into the frame, then a polyurethane caulking is used to fuse the frames to the existing wood frame, It is easier to do than breaking out the stucco but is done for duel window purposes, not to stop leaking windows. It appears the paper is damaged which stops the water intrusion, you can temporarily fix this with Stucco-flexes, "Renew" paint, which usually gives roughly 15 years of waterproofing, the issue becomes, can you find a person to do it properly? To tear off all the stucco and start from scratch is the best advice, but most can't afford to do this. best wishes, 👨🏻‍🔬

Hi Ramon, are you referring to metal J-trim? If so that's a commercial trim for when steel doors were installed without flanges, the J-Trime was attached to the surround and caulked this allows a clean stucco stop and an expansion. In some states they used to require these metal J-trims or J-channel around all the windows to create an expansion, however, all makers of windows now have built-in expansions. It the states that did require a J-trim around the windows, I always thought, what a damn foolish code.

Good morning Lisa, I have seen some quality window installations, but lately, both Jay and I have experienced poor window installations. Hopefully, it's just a coincidental thing. I tell folks these days I can't bid the stucco repair until I see what a window installer left me to work with. It's just. Lately, most have been poorly installed. That sounds negative, but it's a weird truth.🤔
