This is basic laptop targetted for the education market. Microsoft plans to sell them in bulks to schools. This video will assist school technicians to repair the laptop on-site whenever needed. My country used to buy Samsung Chromebooks in bulks about 10 years ago. They are quite hard to self-repair. I think this Surface SE should be the right laptop for schools in my country (a developing middle income nation in Southeast Asia).

It's odd that the Wi-Fi card is modular but the SSD isn't. Upgradeability aside, the Wi-Fi card rarely needs replacing. If it does break, no big deal. The laptop still works. You can hook it up via USB dongle or Ethernet adapter. But if the SSD fails, not only do you lose your schoolwork/assignments, the laptop also becomes a paperweight. The omission of an M.2 slot for storage is a weird one for sure. Running an OS on external storage is always an option, albeit clunky.

It really is not, Zack. A laptop this size came with upgradable RAM and 2.5” storage not too long ago with a decent cooling system. Despite smaller storage sticks and passive cooling, they completely skimped on upgradable parts. This is merely a disassembly video and doesn’t do justice to repairability.

I am an industry outsider of about 8 years. Just so you know, this is a disassembly video, not a repair video. We see nothing being repaired - pulling it apart is only half the story. Four most common repairs I see for education-market laptops are the LCD, charging port, keyboard and the "hinge". But by hinge I mean the bottom chassis, or "bucket" in this instance. - The video doesn't show the process of replacing the LCD independent of the lid, but it's most likely an off the shelf panel so should be trivial to replace even without instructions. 11.6" WXGA laptop LCDs are very common, it's just a matter of whether it has screw flanges or not. Chances are you can even upgrade it to IPS! - The DC jack is a modular and not soldered, excellent! A lot of Chromebooks these days have USB-C only for charging, and the port is usually soldered which sucks for repair. - Ideally the keyboard should not be fused to the top case, so it can be replaced on its own. - When a laptop "hinge" breaks, it's never the hinge itself that breaks. It's the mounting point for the screws in the bucket, or the bucket itself. Would've been nice to see a large steel anchor or some other kind of reinforcement so that it's far less likely to break in the first place.

All the laptops I have ever owned were basically this straightforward to repair. (Other than Apple! Which I never buy, but I have gotten some when family members no-longer wanted them. Even the ~2012 and older Apple laptops were about this repairable if you could only get the replacement parts easily.) I appreciate how above and beyond Framework has gone now, and I like that companies are publishing teardown guides. But all my Dell laptops/desktops for example have had repair and service manuals. Acer is also openable and user-serviceable. Having non-replaceable parts is an extremely recent trend in the history of consumer PCs. We should understand that this is a step back, a regression from even the 2000s and 2010s. And demand that companies KEEP computers repairable. Not glue and mold them down into parts that aren't "serviceable" so much as "breakable" if you attempt to open them up and take them apart. Anyhow, thanks MS for going BACK to repairable designs. Like it always has been. Don't regress that ever again, please. Especially if it's just following Apple down a bad road that led you there. Thank you.

Microsoft, I bought the Surface Pro competitor offered by Lenovo, the ThinkPad X12 Detachable, as that product features six screws behind the fold-out back cover used to access the internal components of the device. No adhesive/glue was used to prevent opening of the device and user-servicing of it. That device also has user-acquirable parts to use proper replacements. Please introduce this to all of your product lines in the future and I would consider a Microsoft product more seriously.

@meetankush
@meetankush 2 жыл бұрын
Upgradable components aren’t for the “savvy” crowd, they are for everyone. Two years down the line, 8GB RAM won’t be enough or my SSD can die on me, none of those two things I can upgrade myself, making replacing memory or storage a complete board replacement issue, which is half the price of the laptop. Microsoft releasing this video is likeone opening the trunk of a Tesla car.

I like how the palmrest is the first part that comes off since the keyboard and touchpad are the parts of the laptop that get worn out the most. You could easily restore one of these laptops to "new" condition for another user by simply replacing that. The only problem I have is that the SSD appears to be soldered onboard. So, that basically means this entire motherboard has a limited lifespan.

MacBooks have traditionally been more repairable and upgradeable than that

No replaceable RAM or Storage though. And the base model is only 64GB. That was low 10 years ago when SSDs were first coming out, today its a real joke. Just windows, office and a handful of documents and pictures and I'm already past 60GB used space on a clean install of Windows 11. 128GB should've been the minimum in 2022, not 64GB.

Then this computer isn't for you and you should buy a higher end unit.

this laptop is for education market, not for you.

@@sugadevanarr1 With all due respect, even with all the cloud storage options available with this device, how’s one supposed to justify the 30GB post Windows installation space for all of a child’s documents and videos? Not everything streams online and some 3rd party applications take large space upon installation. iPad is much more versatile and exactly as repairable as this device. Who is Microsoft projecting their virtue to?

@@meetankush this device competes with chromebooks. Chromebooks are inferior to this And chromebooks gained excellent market share in education market. Education markets works differently. iPad is repairable? versatile? In which world? Learn.

@@sugadevanarr1 There is no convincing anyone who believes iPads aren't versatile. I can edit 4k movies on an entry level iPad, compose music using GarageBand and other 3rd party apps without breaking a sweat, code Swift apps without running into 'limited memory' issue and use interactive 3D education apps without dropping frames. How is this laptop repairable again? You can replace the display? You can do it on an entry level iPad, too. Plenty of tutorials (and parts!) available for it. You can replace the battery here? You can do it for the $300 (education price) iPad, too. Plenty of tutorials (and parts!) available for it. You can replace the motherboard here, because the storage and RAM are soldered to the board itself? You can do it for an iPad, too. Please note, there are NO parts available YET for this laptop for the general public, only to authorized repair centers. So yes, iPad IS as repairable as this.
