Repairing a clogged septic leach field

We bypass a clog in the leach field, reattach to the old field and add additional chambers. Their septic tank backed up and overflowed inside the house, which is a sign of a clogged leach field. We offered a repair that also increased the capacity of the field at the same time. This repair has worked very well and the homeowners have not had any problems.

Love this! Repair jobs are so tough since you don't want to destroy everything. Love how your architected so even if one side fails they're still good to go. Hopefully he updates his septic drawings so when it needs fixing in a decade or three they'll know where to dig.
@DaddyBeanDaddyBean
@DaddyBeanDaddyBean 2 жыл бұрын
My grandfather had to dig up his tank when I was a kid, and still had the measured drawing from when he put that tank in the ground 43 years earlier. I know where the caps are for mine - I set flat stones flush in the dirt directly on top of them, after digging to find them the first time - but I have zero documentation of the leach field, just "over there somewhere" from the previous owner.

More and more septic systems are becoming real problems ...please include more of these if you get the chance. I appreciate your knowledge and your explanations of your methods and the follow up. One other youtuber who "specializes" in french drains "guy" has completely opposite philosophy as you. As I watch his videos, I cringe as I can see the homeowner will be extremely disappointed when it floods again: using fabric, corrugated perforated pipes, river rock, covers the drain with dirt and sod, pumping water to a dead end, leaving downspouts to drain a french drain covered with grass that isn't tied to any drain. The corner of the house is already sagging and cracked, and his handiwork will guarantee further erosion and eventual collapse of the corner of the house. And the most ridiculous part is that there are so many who comment on how wonderful his work is... on video without a follow-up. Appreciate you!

Interesting. The whole point of chambers is to not use gravel. The idea is the bare soil has more surface area to absorb water into it.

Does your county require that they come out to inspect prior to covering? We had to replace our leach field (and clear a bunch of trees - doubled(!) the cost...) and the county required submitted plans and then a post installation inspection before covering (North Georgia) - and you are 100% correct about letting the soil compact naturally for a month or more! The chambers are the cat's meow too - efficient and a joy to install.

The crazy issue is you put the septic back in the same place, where the original one was, it seems you enogh room 5o put beyond the tree root system,, plus if the home owners want replace there deck , septic tank wont be under the deck area. The reason for the center hole that you sand is for weight the tank down, most states hane to put a anchor system to hold tank from flooting up. 😊

In the northeast, those chambers need to be bedded on at least 12 inches of sand or stone, that clay will not perc correctly. Also, no county inspection before you closed the trench?

Hi Shawn. Recognizing that different municipalities have different building codes, I'm wondering if you considered placing a distribution sump (A.K.A., "D-box") at the location that you placed the double sanitary "T." D-boxes provide an auxiliary location for small solids to settle (and decompose), as well as provide a way to access/control the even flow of gray water into either leach location.

They leave the open space under them and that's what fills with water. The large surface area of bare soil under there is what absorbs the water back into the soil. No, we only work in/around greensboro.

Didn't know you could use chambers in an environment with clay like that one. I know they use them here in FL where everything is sandy.....seems like that system would find trouble getting absorbed into the soil.

It's seems to me the tank was set to deep to begin with the lateral field has way to much cover absorbsioun through surface getting sunlight is a major plus if soil (like yours) doesn't absorb water well Clay soil not good yes chambers allow unrestricted area for water detention an allows roots to feed off affluent which helps displace water but personally I fell system was improperly installed in the beginning but capassaty is all you could do for it Chambers factor say 15 inches of cover I've found that 10 to 12 inch max works better good video

Awesome video and work as always. One question, shouldn't that effluent have been pumped out instead dumped on the surface? Mind your regs on that. hard to get a reputation back in the county Environmental Health Office.

I'm not seeing any soil, weed barrier type cloth being used on the effluent discharge pipes. Is there something like that built into the design of them already. I like how your not crushing the new pipes by over compacting the dirt also.

WTF, there are people complaining of too high of resolution? @jswyman "ease up" ? Really,? The man invest his time and money to bring us the highest quality content videos can afford to and people who don't take the time to educate themselves on the platform they obviously enjoy? I don't get it. He is doing for our viewing pleasure!

@jswyman again, it's a lack of education "issue", as of right now, two hours later, resolutions available from 144p to 5k for your viewing pleasure. If people already knew this fact about KZfaq they would not be posting ignorant comments! If being conceded is knowing why people are posting ignorant comments, then ok I am. If people took the time search KZfaq why a video is currently only available in a specific resolution we would not have this conversation, right?

Hey Shawn, I appreciate the video topic. I also appreciate you wanting to shoot the video in higher resolution. I was only able to watch about 1 minute of the video before I saw the grey buffer spinning wheel. A bunch of your viewers were stating just wait for a few hours for KZfaq to process the video. Well its been over 13 hours and there is no other video option to select for a lower resolution rate. The only option is to view in 2880p60 or auto… either option gives you the grey buffer spinning wheel. I’m not complaining about the quality, I would love to see the better quality, better picture and sound but its not currently viewable. I live in the midwest and I don’t think it's an east coast / west coast issue. My current internet provider is AT&T and I have not had any issues with the 125 plus channels that I have subscribed too, just this video.

You never use a regular rubber fernco for a horizontal connection. It must be a shielded furnco or it will sag and cause a blockage.

The gravel around that first piece of corrugated should also help keep it from getting clogged with dirt/mud shouldn't it? Personally, I think you should have cut the corrugated back as far under the slab as you could reach and replace it with solid PVC to help prevent future clogging...

Do the sharp angles hooking up the PVC create a potential problem. Do you provide a schematic for the homeowner for the future. A good map of piping, field direction?
