When I was 15, I adopted an Amazon who was already 10 years my senior. His poor beak was very much like Toupac's; overgrown, dry, dull, cracked and flaking. His previous owners loved him but had zero idea how to properly care for him so he spent 20 years in a cage too small, on a poor diet, heavy smoking environment, I don't think he was ever bathed. Couldn't really fly since his cage wasn't big enough to allow him to properly flap his wings so they atrophied. Most of his feathers were so ratty and thin, they looked like he had not had a proper moult in over a year. My Koko's beak flaked just like Toupac's, took no effort at all to chip away at the dead keratin. Even his poor little feet scales flaked. It took years for Koko to truly recover but he still could not ever fly properly. Seeing Toupac in his arrival condition hits so close to home, it's painful. I've been there and it's heartbreaking to see any animal in that condition. The improvement in Toupac's condition is like night and day. Good on you for all your hard work.

Sandpaper isn't as outside the box as you think. I train falcons and sometimes they don't maintain their beak well enough. To keep them from getting overgrown we do something called coping. Using small files to shore their beak up reshape it and get it back to where it's supposed to be. The downside is falcons have to generally be manhandled to do this but are hooded to keep them calm as possible. There aren't hoods designed for parrots or toucans so probably not advised since parrots can also hold a grudge. It seems to have gone very well and he seemed quite cooperative. Great job!

"I've got beak all over my sofa" is not your everyday sentence LOL Also so cute how he kept looking at you and then rubbing his beak on the back of the sofa. I think he liked the sanding treatment!

You did a fabulous job on his beak, Im sure he really appreciated the help. That had to be a lot of work scrubbing it. Reminds me more of our feet then nails when we get build up of dead skin around the sides and heals. Same thing though, just not as hard a surface. Those flakes were huge! wow. Eagerly awaiting for the big reveal! I was just thinking about that and wondering when that was.

Kage Hikari well the beak of a bird is made of a similar thing as our nails and hair so it would make sense

I use coconut oil on my African grey and macaw. When I got my macaw his beak was cracked and in some places bloody, he was from a neglectful home. We got him from a shelter that didn’t know how to care for birds. He’s beautiful now!!

It is amazing what you have done for this bird. This bird was in such poor condition and it is no wonder his mate died under the conditions he and his mate were living under. You are healing him both physically and emotionally. I think everyone that follows your channel is so grateful for what you have done for this bird. PS I would love an actual picture of Toupac on a shirt. I would definitely buy that. I like the cool art you had done of him; but, I would love an actual picture of him. You can be so proud of what you have accomplished for this bird in a short time.

Thank you for helping this toucan. I lost my partner 2 years ago and we loved Toucans we always had the saying "I can you can one can Toucan" we were crafters and we always wanted to have a toucan but were never able to afford one. So again thank you for caring for him and making this video.
