Repairing a Seriously Broken Acoustic Guitar-Cracked back, Neck Reset, Broken Truss Rod...

My friend asked me to take a look at her guitar and I noticed it had a broken truss rod and needed a neck reset, I didn't have time to fix that so I sent it home with some lighter strings on, however sometime in the last couple of months I think she either dropped it or dropped something on it and seriously damaged the back of the guitar which came free from the sides of the guitar. This video shows how I approached repairing it. I am not a professional instrument repairer so this isn't intended as a tutorial, but I thought it would be interesting to see it brought back to life.

Nice work David, I'm doing the identical job now. I have worked as maker for many years on my own instruments but always nerve wracking working on somebody else's build. Anyway, as a refresher this video helped me and I actually learned a few extra tricks that I don't normally do. Thanks. One thing that is often overlooked is that with a reset you need to make a new bridge saddle as the up tilt changes the intonation so it needs to move accordingly.

Damn. You're not a professional? This makes me realize that I am not nearly as good at many things as I thought I was. I'll definitely be more careful before I call myself a professional at anything else in my life ._. Great job on the guitar, my friend!

Dave: Really incredible job. One suggestion: put a sheet of Millar on the top before removing neck or bridge (although it looks like you didn't need it).

A labour of love! Hope your girlfriend gives you as much loving as you put into her guitar! Fantastic job. Better than most do called luthiers that would tell you it is unrepairable. Very patient and talented man you are!

Most "so called luthiers" as you say, wouldn't say it's un-repairable", rather, not worth the money to repair this cheap guitar. Although, repairing cheap guitars are a great way to hone your skills as a budding luthier

Great video. Just one little thing. When glueing up the neck / body joint, it's the notice and tenion that have the glue applied. The heel itself is not glued. It can be a real nightmare getting the neck off again otherwise.

I think with my first neck reset I’ll do it your way. I was going to just cut through the finger board at the 12th fret. Well done 👍🏼 Very neat and tidy!!

I only took the fretboard off to repair the truss rod, I don’t know if I’d recommend it for a neck reset. I’d recommend checking out some of Ted Woodfords videos.

Josh Cook thanks, my day job is working for a musical instrument wholesaler, I got into woodwork building guitars and have built a few for friends and take on the occasional repair in my spare time, so this is kind of a hobby as well as other woodwork/making!

Great video with very clear information. I have a question: I have acquired a Maton EM225c with a broken truss rod (the adjusting nut has been over tightened and snapped the rod at the nut). Do you have any experience with Maton truss rods ie what type are they? and can I get around removing the fret board? Thanks in advance mate. Always enjoyed woodwork and just been getting into some luthier work and have found your videos invaluable.
