I remember in the late 90’s retiring some old compaq remote access systems (if I recall they were 386DX systems each with a rack of 9600 or 14.4K external modems). When I opened the cases it was like a dryer lint trap or wool blanket. You could literally peel the dust off in one solid sheet that retained an impression of the components from the motherboard.

MAME is a system for emulating arcade games made many years after the peak of arcade games in the 80's and early 90's, so it's a bit slimmer tech-wise than the guts of your standard arcade cabinet, but you're correct that the cabinet is mostly empty space. The form factor is necessary for it to be played standing up comfortably, but the games themselves are just one or two big circuit boards.

I desperately want Brian to put the time in to set this up with a JeOS that’s specifically aimed at making this really nice. Like, you could set up Batocera to boot straight in to Track and Field and if you did have other games (even though in this case he doesn’t) you could hotkey out of that game and switch but make it present as track and field as standard

The reason the PS2->USB adapter didn't work is because you're using a passive one. During the PS2 to USB transition years, it was very common for mice and keyboards to support both PS2 and USB, but only have a PS2 plug. The adapter literally just connects the PS2 pins to the USB data lines, the mouse/keyboard detects which it's connected to and uses the correct signalling. The game controller portion of your setup does not understand USB signalling - it just naively passes through the USB data from the keyboard, but sends it's own signals as PS2 which are ignored by the PC because it doesn't understand them!

So much of your stuff has been outdoors I thought it was like - I don't know - a radio or PIP-Boy or something that you'd use for out in the wilderness. How funny that it's an arcade game. MAME (Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator) is an emulator that allows you to run the software of mainly old arcade games. A dump of the game (usually called ROMs) is saved from the originals and then you can use the emulator to run the games on a standard computer (with Windows, Mac, Linux). The project has been around for a very long time.

I'm not going to pretend I can even come CLOSE to understanding the ongoing legal broohaha over ROMs. What I can understand, however, is that if you can prove you once owned a legal physical copy of the game, then nobody can reasonably get tetchy over you having a ROM of said game. After all, how do they know you didn't rip your own ROM, or have a family member/friend/paid tech savvy person rip a ROM from your own physical copy? If you aren't using ROMs from games you've never owned, IE, games that you have no legal right to have a copy of, then there's nothing that can really come back on you as an individual. If you're incredibly unlucky, and piss off someone who's already prosecuting you, you might get charges tacked on relating to ROMs, but nobody's going after an individual for ROM possession. It's much like how nobody really goes after anyone for owning stolen music, there's no value in it and it's too hard to prove unless someone's incredibly stupid about it. Sure, it could theroetically be done, but there'd be no benefit to the court case and any half decent lawyer could muddy the case for ages and ages. So it never happens. All that said, I pity the groups making emulators, because the legal hoops they have to jump through are crazy. Those guys, and the guys running ROM distributing websites, those are the ones at real legal risk, and damn does it show.

Abandonware is an interesting part of IP stuff... In our case, there's still a Konami that exists to make a fuss about how we're emulating, but when you bring in companies that no longer exist, there's nobody with an incentive to enforce the letter of the law. -Brian
@nssheepster
@nssheepster Жыл бұрын
@@ModernRogue One of my favorite all time games is Mechwarrior 4 Mercenaries... Thanks to copyright disputes involving three different countries, two different video game devs, the tabletop game, and the source book makers, they made it freeware just to ditch the problem entirely. Nobody has the right to distribute it, (not since Mektek went under,) but also nobody can charge anyone for it, sell it, post it on a website to share, or complain if you just hand someone a copy via a DM or something. It's ridiculous, but the argument was so widespread and over the top complicated that nobody had any idea who'd actually win, just that it'd take a good decade or more to sort it all out, so.... They ditched the whole game. IP laws get VERY strange, VERY fast, especially once you get multiple countries involved, any corporate takeovers/rebrandings, if any related IP got sold.... Shit gets weird.
