that roof had shakes and was built to support that style of roof.. When you sheet over and re shingle the roof, you over load the rafters.. Looks good...

This worked out great. Thanks. I didn't go quite this far but I got the sag out damn close to perfect. Tossed a few angled gusset boards in. Wrapped it up in four hours. I'm pretty pleased for my first time doing this particular project

Great video. I have the same issue over a large area in my roof. Barrel tile roof. The interior ceiling is also vaulted. Little harder to climb in attic..

Impressive job! I think the strongback would be stronger if the 2x8 was where the 2x4 is
@everymancarpentry17123 жыл бұрын
I certainly agree. If I had to do it again. I'd go with 4" L angles steel or bigger. That would suck much more bow out of it.
@MAGAMAN11 ай бұрын
@@everymancarpentry1712 That might just add more of a bow to it due to the excess weight from the steel.

How big of a project is it to upgrade all of the rafters? I have the same problem on my 110 year old, 20'x40' perfect rectangular shaped house. 20k or under id consider it but anything over that and ill just have to do a fix like this.
@everymancarpentry17123 жыл бұрын
Hard to say. 20k easy.

I did something similar and the stress cracked the rafter at the top anchor after a few months. Now what? Install a sistering splint board? Should stress be relieved first? Will relieving stress cause leaks? Help!
@everymancarpentry17123 жыл бұрын
I wish I had an answer for that one. Is it possible to sister the full length of rafter?

@@everymancarpentry1712 there is only 3 rafter ties and they are not even connected to the top plate and rafter I was thinking of over lapping 2 14' 2x6s and making rafter ties on every other rafter then adding coller ties on every other rafter 1/3 of the way to the peek

@@everymancarpentry1712 so overlapping rafter ties and bolting in the middle will be ok I don't plan on storing anything on them it's a 24' span from wall to wall so I would have a 4 foot overlap

Hi Tom, My home's about the same age and the roof looks very similar to this video. I need to find someone in my area (Oceano, Ca.) to make the same type of repairs. Know of anybody?

You strong back in installed the wrong way. The 2x6 should be where the 2x4 is and the 2x4 should be where the 2x6 is. These should also be supported with structure all the way down to the foundation. What you did was just add a lot of excessive weight to the underside of the ceiling, which was already compromised.
