Assalamualaikum and hi everyone.
hopefully everybody's doing fine.
In today's video I'll be showing how I repaste my Lenovo Legion 5.
For those of you not familiar with the term repasting, it's basically just mean replacing the old thermal compound and putting a fresh one in.
This begs the question why do it in the first place? Well, there are many reasons. Before we go into the reasons, for those who are not as familiar with regards to component cooling in general, thermal paste/thermal interface or thermal compound is a material that allow heat transfer between a cpu/gpu and its cooler.
the reason we need thermal paste is due to the micro imperfections on the contact surfaces that prevent good contact between these surfaces and causing inefficient heat transfer and therefore ineffective cooling. The thermal paste serve to fill in these gaps to ensure good heat transfer.
Now, thermal interfaces would eventually degrade and dry out(usually take years) and this would cause a degradation of thermal performance of your device. This is one reason to repaste.
Some repaste because they want to use better thermal pastes. Some did it because they think the factory did a bad job with applying thermal paste(or cheap out on thermal paste), but in the end it boils down to getting the best thermal performance from your device.
Anyway in this video I also showed some performance comparison before and after repasting and offer my opinion whether you should or should not attempt to repast your device.
By the way this is not a review or endorsement of the Artic MX4 thermal paste. It's just something that I have in hand.

Pro Tip-ish: Lenovo's BIOS actually gives you the option to Disconnect the battery without the need to do that battery removal step (which honestly is a pain haha). Once you press enter on that selection on BIOS, it automatically shuts off the computer and can only be powered on via AC. This'll make upgrading/maintaining the device easier and avoids mishaps (like breaking those battery connectors) Once your done upgrading, just plug it with the power brick, turn on, and let it boot (there is no need to go to the BIOS again and turn it on, it automatically turns back itself once AC power is applied), regardless it's best to check still PS: Even me, when I installed my 1TB SSD forgot such step haha. In a perfect world with no shorts and ESD it should be fine, but we are not in that perfect world SO. Make sure to remove 'em :D Impt guideline when repasting: 1. Before doing anything, ALWAYS HAVE A BASELINE. Baseline includes your benchmarking scores, ALL YOUR temps (package temp, core temps, hotspot temps all the temp values you can see) this wiill be relevant later post maintenance 2. The most common method of applying thermal compound i.e., the teardrop, IS NOT ADVISABLE since you are (technically speaking) no applying it on the heat spreader BUT ON the DYE ITSELF. Hence, you need to apply thermal compound and SPREAD on the dye AND on the metal plate. There are a lot of videos/articles explaining this but the TL'DR laymans term of it is: the exposed part of the dye is actual "protective skin" of the actual chips, and missing even small areas will cause certain chips to overheat. MoN's video doesn't really show him spreading it, but hopefully he did, if not, hopefully the pressure when he pressed back the heatsink provided enough coverage. AGAIN AGAIN AGAIN, this only applies when your faced with repasting the actual dye, let's not debate about application methods. - - So how do you know if you messed up? Most modern hardware not only report the package temp, but also report the hotspot temp, if that reaches 90-100 deg.C+ even on light load, then its a good indication you messed up somewhere. This is where the "before i touched anything" pre-bechmark comes in handy, since you SHOULD get equal to or bettter results esp. on the temps 3. Lastly, unless you're experienced, dont use metalic base/conductive thermal compound.

@@masterofnone4608 AC, what? The charger cable/power brick transforms AC (from the wall) to DC. There isn't any AC running straight into the computer.

@@-RXB- I believe he just meant that by disconnecting the battery in the bios the laptop will run only if it's plugged in to the charger, and since the charger is connected to the wall, it runs off the AC. I don't actually think he meant the laptop is actually running on AC😅. basically i think he just meant that the laptop would not run on the battery when disconnected in the bios. , 😁

Disconnecting Battery in BIOS will not disconnect the hardware and if the hardware is connected it can still transmit power which can destroy the motherboard. So, It's not a good Idea!

For long-term stability and high thermal performance almost nothing beats Honeywell PTM7950 paste sheets on the Legion 5. The L5 Pro from 2021 and after comes from the factory with Honeywell PTM phase-change pads and they are better than basically anything you're going to replace it with. So recommend cleaning the cooling fins and fans as best as possible first if their is minor dust buildup without removing the cooling stack, if the area is gray as a pigeon disassembly is the best option (Some fan mounting screws are underneath the heatpipes) and if the temps are still unacceptable my first highly recommended choice is the PTM7950 sheet (i found and got them from ebuy7). Otherwise Thermalright TFX, Shin-Etsu 7921-5, IC Diamond, Maxtor CTG9, Thermagic ZF-EX, Highly viscous pastes but even with those a repaste within 5 months might be necessary. Placing links results in the removal of my message (Probably a YT naughty bots protection policy) Google: PTM7950 Legion 5 Also it is recommended to spread the paste on direct-die because you can fry a chip if a small part remains uncovered like a memory controller or something else on the corner/edge of a GPU.

Just replace stock thermal pads with thermal putty such as Laird 607 and combine with Thermalright TF9 (in my case). Done! Can even test it against Honeywell PTM 7950 sheet as well.

@@TeaTeaMew The factory ones are pretty good actually, You will not see any big noticable difference compared to brand new expensive pads, not with Lenovo Legion series. Very high w/mk pads tend to have a sturdy hardness and are not easy to compress which might prevent good proper contact pressure on the die's when they are not of equal thickness. depending on the model Lenovo uses 0.5 0.75 0.85 and 1.0 for the thinner pads.

I'm quite new to this, but which variant of the PTM7950 should i buy? Is 40 x 80 x 0.2mm good for both gpu and cpu? I found one on amazon for 17 dollars. And do you have to buy two of them, for both cpu and gpu?

I feel people failed to realised that unlike repasting thermal compound on a desktop with some decent or good cooling solution, you probably will not see a drop in temp on a laptop unless you are not stressing the CPU or GPU fully. The reason being that there is just not enough surface area to implement a beefier cooling solution. So while changing to a better thermal compound helps with heat transfer to the heat pipes and then to the heat sinks, the bottleneck will eventually be at the puny heat sinks. In addition, just as demonstrated in the video, because the CPU and GPU are usually thermally limited, therefore, when there is any thermal headroom, it will attempt to run at a faster clockspeed. In my opinion, you will need some thick thermal compound for laptop use because of (1) poor mounting pressure, and, (2) high temps which most thermal compound will degrade rapidly, including the expensive but ineffective Thermal Grizzly. Thermalright TFX and SYY 157 appears to be better thermal compound for such use case and they are a lot more durable.

I have dell 7577 and 2 years after I bought it it needed repasting when I saw how complicated is it to open it I tried to do it and it took me like 3 hours separating the 2 parts was horrible experience that's why I decided to watch this video before buying the legion5 Your explanation was amazing I will save this although I hope u would talk rather than typing it easier to watch while hearing instead of focusing on the explanation and what you are doing at the same time and for something like this I need to really focus on what you're doing

i know that pain, i still have a dell 5577 that needs to be almost completely dissasembled just to be able to change the thermal paste and its a pain. I have an RTX 3060 legion 5 for my use, but i still maintain my dell laptop.

2 tips! (I have a legion 5) . When removing the bottom panel, start at the REAR edge, about in line with the corner screw hole. Leave a wedge to keep the gap open. Work to the centre. Repeat on the other end. . Then work around the corner and apply a light lever action. . Repeat on the other side. . The sides (at the vents) will pop *much* more easily than working from the front. . After the vent area is popped its easy to run down each side to the front. ..... Next. Don't use nails, or a screwdriver on the battery connector. . Either 2 spudgers, one each end, in the gap, from the top and a slight twist, 1mm at a time. Or, I use an old store/ credit card with a corner cut off at 45°. About an 8-10mm edge. Work each end with a twist. . No metal near contacts, no bent pins. (I'm a copier technician, I've seen both cause issues!)

good video! One remark: on the left side of the heatpipe construction one can clearly see some oily residue - which is the "silicon-oil" the heat pads in memory chips of the GPU sweated out/bled out! Why did you not replace those as well?! I do have a Lenovo Legion 5 pro ACH6H with a RTX 3070 and after only about 5 months of constant 24/7 use - the memory of the agPU will over-hest to the point the laptop shuts down after about 45min. after full-power usage and crash. I am going to replace the old thermal pads with Alphacool Apex Soft 11W/mk. They are supposed to be able to withstand temps of about up to 150° C and have a constant performance throughout their lifetime without bleeding out! all while offering performance superior to that of the original ones. I the beginning my Laptops (had 6 of them mining ETH) would tolerate a memory overclock of +800/850 while mining steadily at around 60,2 mh/s - dropped down to 57,9 mh/s at +550mhz on the memory because otherwise they will overheat and shutdown. 1 laptop broke down after about 2 months and simply stopped working. a month later I had to sent in the secont one... Got my money back on both of those. 4 remained till about 5months in. now number 1 broke down to above mentioned thermal issued and 3 remain mining 24/7 at reduced +500mhz OC of the memory. the one whoe broke down most recently will not even mine at stock speed for longer then 30 - 45min. or endure a furmark for more then about 1h. So I am goind to repaste, apply those Alphacool pads (about 35€ for 100x100x1mm) and then let's see what the temps and performance is then. I am aiming for at least my initial 60mh/s. maybe I can push it to +1200mhz or even a little bit more... If it works - all remaining laptops will receive the same treatment. Maybe I'll do a video on the process. Will update on here if I decide to do so...

It appears that the fan casings are held with tiny screws (5:40). Opening the case while mounted is probably an easy way to clean the fan without having the need to unplug it.

wow that's disgustingly cheap! I envy US for having cheap laptops :((( that spec is around 1283$ USD worth of IDR here in Indonesia. but even that is already considered somewhat cheap, because many of 2060 laptops are above 1386$ USD.

i just bought the legion 5 pro i7-11800h 3070 variant few days ago, not satisfied with the temps on the cpu and gpu so i decided to open it up and see it for myself. I was surprised that the stock paste already dried up! i could swipe my finger on it and it crumbles. I clean the eff up all the old paste residue, and replace it with what i have on hand, cooler master cryofuze paste. after i done that, i rerun my heaven benchmark, points went up 200 extra, and both temps on cpu and gpu no longer reaches 75-80+. cpu chilling at 60+ ish and gpu so far never went above 75c.

@@renegadesg018 for CPU i recommend you use the Honeywell PTM 7950 pad. The stock one came with legion. for gpu i found best result use Thermalright TFX paste. cryofuze also ok.

Great video. I experienced the same thermal issue with my Legion 5 after repasting with MX4, but then I repasted again with Thermalright TFX and the temps are now 10 - 15 °C lower. For better results, the TFX has a curing time around 3 days.

Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act prohibits any manufacturer to void a warranty unless they can prove your tampering is what caused the damage. Simply replacing the thermal paste or disassembling the machine is not enough to void any warranty in the U.S., you have to do something like put the long screw in the short hole, use way too much paste (especially if it's electrically conductive like liquid metal), use modular devices that aren't compatible with the product, etc. Ever seen a "Warranty Void If Removed" tamper resistant sticker on a product? Those are illegal, null, and void in the U.S.

notes 1. 1660 ti version and above have noticeably bigger gpu heatpipe. this guy has the lowest 1650 ti gpu, thus the heatpipe is small. 2. the fans on 1660 ti n above are not removable n part of the heatsink itself. 3. use kingpin kpx/thermalright tfx for best result since they got low viscosity, hence reducing pump out. apart from that, mx4 will not be able to handle ryzen

You should always spread it as a precaution these are bare dies not IHS even a single tiny bit missing can affect temps greatly

The left and right exhaust gap is the most difficult to pry. I broke 3 clips when doing it on my own XD Legion 7i, tho. But it should be similar.

Be careful with the thickness of the thermal pads, 2mm might be too thick and will stop the heatsink from contacting the cpu/gpu surface properly

excellent video.. Just a question: can you remove the fans only without removing the main heatsink? so that you only clean the fans without repasting?

hi, thanks for watching. unfortunately one of the screws holding the fan bracket is placed underneath one of the heatpipes(both sides), so if you want to remove the fans you have to remove the heatsink. somebody did mention in previous comments that you can actually remove the case of the fans by undoing some small screws, I never tried that. However if you just want to clean the fans without removing the cooler, I suggest using on old toothbrush to clean the dust off the fans. it works for me. hope this helps.

@@ozgurdogan5443 yes. sorry, what I meant is the bracket holding the fan is underneath the heatpipe. i suppose that may work, unfortunately I just sold my Legion 5😅 so I have no way to check if that'll work.

use thermal grizzly kryonaut , it has the high thermal conductance at 12.7 W/mK ♥️♥️♥️♥️ , while your MX4 is like 4.7W/mK, but still good ♥️♥️♥️

@@miroslavmartinek522 i applied some to my friends asus tuf laptop , since the TUF gaming laptops have little to no vents , it overheats like hell 🔥🔥🔥 94°C was the maximum , repasting with Kryonaut brought maximum temps down to 83°C ♥️♥️ that was for the CPU , GPU had like a 4 degree drop..

Don't repaste laptop at least for 2 years of usage. And then don't blindly repaste it. Compare stress test results of your unit with results you can find online. If you get similar results, don't waste your time and money on repasting. Remove the back case, clean dust, especially from the fans, that's all you can do. Current pads and pastes can easily last 2-3 years without any performance decrease. Easily.

@@micha8469 hi, actually when i first got my legion 5, i think my temps for the gpu were going up to 86 and cpu above 90. Just 2 months back, i gave it for servicing, i told them to just clean the fans and not apply thermal paste and it was still giving the same temps but it gained it much slower. Now its doing the same thing and my temps for cpu is going above 96 but its not going above 100 and the gpu is throttling at 87 degrees in just 10 mins. Should i repaste the cooler? like only the gpu and cpu die. And which paste because i dont know if i can get the ptm 7950.

Is it critical that after tightening the screws on a heatsink they stick out a bit? I tighten them all the way gradually according to numbers and still they stick out about 1-2 mm

ok thx for video . got mine thermal paste also changed yesterday : want to point a very important thing to consider - the temps are higher now on cpu and gpu , and i thought first I made a mistake fitting smth but indeed the inside diode temp goes higher because coolers can take faster temperature out so take care everyone, basically cpu is now on 92 celsius and was on 85 c and thermal paste was rock old , changed to a good one grizzly kryonaut

Hi, thank you for the video. Wanted to asked you about one think (maybe you know). Recently i've bought a Lenovo Legion 5i with CPU i7-10750H and RTX 2060. Seems pretty tough but when I play Far Cry 5 on max (system suggested that) I get 85-92 CPU temp. Laptop is 4 months old and I also use a cooling pad. Should I be worried about this temps?

hi. thanks for watching😁 the 10750h max temp is rated @ 100 celcius before it starts to throttle down. There are many factors that influence temperatures, airflow and ambient temps being among them. based on what you mentioned, that temp range is well within the safety limit of the cpu while it being stressed. I would be worried if your laptop is consistently operating at that temp on idle(ie just turned on and not doing anything), however if you're gaming it should be fine. the best way to know whether your temp is normal for for your laptop is to compare with what the temps other people with same laptop experience. nowadays it's easy, just search your laptop on KZfaq and I'm pretty sure there's at least a few Legion 5i reviews. you can compare your temps with them. hope this helps😁

to overclock, in general you have to have upgraded cooling. that's why there's aftermarket cooler. with laptops, it's a bit complicated as there's no real after market cooler for laptops. manufacturers also designed their laptop cooling to extract a certain level of performance and usually there's very little/no more performance that can be squeezed from the processor because cooling limitation. you also have to start thinking about increased power requirements when overclocking. as most laptop charger is designed to be compact and cost saving, usually the supplied charger will just be enough for the rated performance of the laptop and would not be suitable for overclocking. so, no. I don't think you going to get any tangible improvement by overclocking your laptop and would probably hv more stability problem. ha ha. anyway, this is just a long winded way of saying I don't think the Legion 5i(or any laptop for that matters) was built with overclocking in mind. hope this helps😁

@@recreator9755 undervolting is more to do with getting the temperatures in check, than any boost in performance. boost in performance(if any) when undervolting is mainly due to improved temp that lead to less thermal throttling ie you getting a more consistent and sustained frequency. not exactly the same as overclocking. hope this helps😁

@@Morri88 for the size of pads I looked on internet, and if I am not wrong 1 mm should do the trick but I don't remember. Yeah they helped, the temperatures are exactly the same, but fans are quieter most of the time and frequencies are more consistent.

It's pretty obvious to me that manufacturers use quite the blob when it comes to paste. Every time I've ever done a reapplication, the surface is completely covered and oozing off the sides. Theres a lot of misconceptions about whats a proper amount it seems.

hi. thanks for watching. there's no definite timing for when you shoud change the thermal paste. usually the stock thermal paste would last a good couple of years before showing any sign of deterioration. if you start to notice your laptop doesnt perform as well as when you bought it, its probably time to change the paste (or clean the fan and vents). Sometimes people repaste to squeeze a bit more performance out of their laptop. hope this helps.

Salam, is it possible to remove only the fans without removing the heat pipes so I can just clean the fans and maybe spray some compressed air to the heat sink fins?

waalaikumsalam. unfortunately not. the heat sink/pipes do go over some of the screws and fan bracket. to remove the fan(s) you have to remove the cooler. However, you can clean the fans(even use compessed air) without removing them, but that would mean you are only cleaning one side of the fan(s). Hope this helps. Thanks for watching :)

Hi mate, its actually possible to remove fans without removing the heat pipes. You need to unscrew 3 screws cover on the fan. Then you can take the fan blades, but be careful because its a little bit tricky to remove the fan cover.

Hello, I hope you're doing well. I've got a question about micro stuttering while playing some games. Some times when I played some games such as Genshin Impact, Apex Legends, Assassin's Creed Unity, Atelier Ryza series and Devil May Cry 5, I felt a bit stuttering and even worse my fps dropped between 5-15 fps in some cases. I tried to looking for the solution such as reinstalling the AMD driver or check the Lenovo Vantage setting, but it seems neither of them works. I never tried to overclocking or undervolting my hardware, and I already clean and repaste my thermal paste on march this year. Im using the R5 4600H and GTX 1650 (non ti) unit, also I used medium-low graphic setting on those games except for DMC 5 I used the highest setting because it already plays above 60 fps. So if you have any solution for my problem, that would be nice. Sorry if my Grammar so bad, my native language isn't English.

hi. thanks for watching😊 unfortunately I never play the games you mentioned(I usually play much older games as they're cheaper on steam😅) , so I have no idea whether they would behave the same on my laptop. I don't really know what causes the stuttering/dropped frames. However, I can just think of one thing that may(or may not) help. did you disable the hybrid mode? you can disable it in lenovo vantage software and it will require a restart. disabling hybrid(optimus) mode will cause your laptop to use the discreet graphic card only rather than letting your laptop decide to switch between the integrated graphics and the discreet graphics according to demand. I mean that's the only thing I can think of. if you already turned hybrid mode off(which I'm pretty sure you did, the fact that u repasted ur laptop and did the standard driver reinstalls tells me you're not the average user) then I'm not really sure what's causing the issues. hope this helps. thanks😊 btw, you're grammar is pretty good. much better than mine anyways. Hey i had the same problem some time ago.The way you can fix it is by disabling performance mode while playing games.The shortcut for doing this is fn + Q. You can tell which mode youre on by the color on the power button.If its red youre on performance mode and if its white youre on normal mode. Dont worry about the blue one.Just make sure that the light is white while playing games. This will fix the fps drops. Im not sure if it actually lowers the performace of the laptop but for me normal mode is just fine and im getting the same fps. Hope it helps!

@@masterofnone4608 Thank you for the reply, Unfortunately I already disable the Hybrid mode and I also trying using the Studio Driver and Game Ready Driver in Nvidia setting. Both seems doesn't really affects the gameplay so I turn it back to Game Ready. And when I consulted it to my senior at college, he said that I should trying to uninstall the AMD driver. At some cases it does reduces the stuttering than before. Ah and thank you for the praise, it boosts my confidence a lot.

And actually I've tried to uses performance mode and compared it to Auto mode, and there is no difference on FPS while playing, but when I tried to record with OBS, the performance mode fan noises is louder than the auto mode. Maybe it's just my unit?, anyways thanks for the Information. I thought that playing games with auto mode is wrong for gaming laptops.

hey I have to same model, RTX 2060 intel version, i was wondering where the LCD cable connector is? I have 3 black horizontal lines at the bottom of my screen and people recommend checking that cable and making sure its connected, if you know how to fix the issue aswell i'd appreciate it.

hi. sorry for taking a while. the lcd ribbon cable is located at the top right, near the cpu. you have to remove the heat sink and fans to be able to fully access it. you get a good view of the cable at minute 8:31 in the video. unfortunately I don't know how to fix the issue, you can try reseating the cable and see if it helps, or replace the cable if you got one in hand. I suggest to take it to the service center if it's still under warranty. if the screen need replacing it's fairly advanced DIY project which should be performed at your own risk. hope this helps😁 thanks for watching.

hi. to be honest I'm not too familiar with the ifixit essential kit, but being an ifixit kit I'd assume it's of decent quality. to be fair, you really just need a standard Phillips screw driver and some plastic picks or pry tools(if you care about not scratching the back panel). you also may need some micro fibre cloth and alcohol wipe to clean the old paste. I'd just use whatever I have lying around, and wouldn't go out of my way to get the ifixit kit just for this. however, if you already have the kit in hand, I imagine it would do the job well. hope this helps 😊

what do you mean? you can't unscrew it at all? they are captive screws, so shouldn't need to unscrew completely. however, first time unscrewing does require a bit of force. hope this helps?

hi. the way most cooling system works, is the fan only ramp up when needed. that's why even when launching heavy games(or any load for that matters) the fan don't necessarily would ramp up. However, if the fans don't spin leading to your cpu to overheat and throttles itself, this would point to something more serious. if it still under warranty I would get it checked up. unless you ever unplug the fan cable, please ensure they plugged back in properly. ha ha. hope this helps.

Typically around core the transistors have to be covered with varnish for isolation, because LM is electrically conductive 3. I would check device after 6 months cause you might need to add some LM. ;)

Great video , but I have a question : When I first bought my legion 5 temperature at gaming was about 85 ( avg ) then I took the device to the warranty center and they repasted it then temperatures decreased to about 75 ( avg ) in the same games , all of this was 7 months ago and now the temp. exceeds 90 I doubt they used a bad type of thermal paste that dried on the cpu (i710750h) , gpu (rtx 2060 ) and I am willing to buy an arctic mx 4 and return to the warranty center to repaste the laptop again am I right ? and thanks in advance

Literally just bought my legion 7 3060 Ryzen 7 5800h two days ago and whenever I run apex on max settings it runs great, over 100fps, but my Ryzen is always at 93-94 Celsius. Should I take it somewhere to get looked at or is this normal even for a brand new laptop. I run my laptop on performance mode with performance fans on too.

I'm currently running a Legion 5 pro with a 5800h and 3070. unfortunately my cpu can also peaked to over 90 degrees celcius during cpu intensive application. however the laptop cooling does a fairly good job to bring down the temp to around 85 degrees or so. performance mode not only cause the fans to spin faster, it also pump more power into the cpu and gpu. so don't be surprised that temperatures are higher in performance mode. for example, my laptop in auto mode gpu has power envelope of around 75w and temperatures hovers around 65 degrees. in performance mode it receive around 120w and temperatures is around 85 degrees celcius., this is despite the fan going full bore. ambient temp and surrounding ventilation plays a role too. where I live ambient temperature is around 30 degrees, so I expect my laptop temp would be a few degrees higher than reviewers from colder countries. hope this help.

hi. my laptop normally hovers around 85 degrees when playing games and have brief spikes(few seconds) of sometimes up to 106 degrees. despite this all core clock never throttles to base clock(usually all core clock hovers around 3.7ghz) In the video, when I stressed the cpu synthetically the temps mostly run around 92 degrees with brief spikes of up to 106 degrees. in this scenario the cpu never throttled. I agree, not the most ideal temperatures but it is well within the limits of the cpu as per amd. yeah, running the cpu at lower temps would be ideal but I believe this is what the cooler is capable of. to answer your question, do I think repasting would improve situation, probably not. at least not to any significant degree. esp since the laptop is only 4 months old. it's unlikely that the thermal paste has degrade that much. I would imagine cleaning the fans probably would do more good. depending on where and how you use the laptop, the likelihood of dust has build up on the fans causing airflow restrictions is probably more than thermal paste gone bad. I mean if you really worried about long term effect of high temps, try looking into undervolting the cpu. I mean, I personally don't have much experience with undervolting but I suppose it's an alternative that you can consider. hope this helps.

@@masterofnone4608 same thing with my legion 5, brief spikes to 106c. got me worried so I cleaned them fans and vents and changed the gpu and cpu thermal paste after exactly a year but not much of a difference it still reached 105c sometimes then hovers to 87c to 95c depending on the game but I noticed it's only doing that if I'm playing while it's plugged in. On battery gaming it sticks around 85c to 90c with brief spikes to 98c. I'm not using any cooling pads, just an open stand that elevates my laptop for better airflow. Are your results same whether you're playing on battery or plugged in?

@@armanddavid952 hi. thanks for watching. technically when gaming on battery by definition the power draw to the cpu/gpu is limited. therefore the temperature would be much more under controlled. However, when plugged in the cpu/gpu is allowed to draw higher power, leading to better performance and of course higher temperatures. most of the time unless you really looking for it, or have monitoring ongoing you won't notice the slight reduced performance while on battery. I myself very rarely do any gaming on battery as it drained too quickly to get my gaming fix😅 I hv an upcoming video where I attempted another repaste and do a more detailed analysis on the temp behavior. hopefully it'll be done in the next week or so. hope this helps.

bro. I just used a non branded multi bit screw driver. it's not even magnetized(hence I had to attach a magnet to it😅). it's some cheap screw driver kit that you can find in most hardware stores. it's usually labelled as phone/electronic repair kit or something.

thanks for watching. no, I really haven't consider that. however, don't think it'll make that much of a difference. the contact surfaces and heatsinks are actually not painted. the heat pipes are painted but trying to scratch off the heat pipes would probably cause more problems. 😅 hope this helps

What did you have the lenovo vantage fan profile set to? I wonder if they have their fan profiles set to a standard that conforms with the expected results of the paste they use from the factory. That could defiantly counter act any improvements the paste is making, if the system is waiting longer to kick the fans on. Better fan controls would be nice. I only need my laptop to be quiet in class. It can get as loud as it wants if I'm gaming.

I did run the stress test in performance mode but temps were running over 100 degrees too often with very little clock speed gain. by my estimate running the system in performance mode will gain you approx 10% performance in exchange for more heat and fan noise. personally I don't feel the trade off is worth it. So I run the system in auto mode as it's probably more representative of how most people would use the laptop. again, in quite mode you'd expect a quiter system with less performance. hope this answers your question. thanks😊

@@Kaantop7 hi. thanks for watching. not much tips apart from be patient and take your time and of course use plastic pry tools 😊 yeah, I think an inexperienced person can repaste. especially in the Legion 5, where lenovo did make this laptop quite user upgradable friendly. main thing is, again take your time and be reasonable with it. watch how people do it(not just me) until you're confident enough and then attempt it yourself. Don't rush and take your time. to be honest most challenging part for me is really taking the back panel off😅 once that's done. everything else should be easy. hope this helps. thanks

hi. thanks for watching. for the Legion 5, at least my one, there's no warranty stickers. so technically unless there's very obvious handling damage or you actually tell them what you did, the warranty should still be valid. However this may vary from region to region, so you probably should check on lenovo's local warranty policies. hope this helps, thanks 😊

A little bit too much TIM on the GPU die, but it's okay. And actually, MX-4 is not that great for laptops because it's not thick enough and quite liquidy so it might cause a pump out. Be sure to use something a little bit thicker next time you repaste it. Cheers

My 5800h is reaching 100 degrees and throttling, the gpu reaches between 90-92~ degrees. I hope repasting works for me... I did clean a little bit the fans but I'll try now with a toothbrush

Too bad you didn't see much improvement. I always repaste my electronics right after I buy them. That cement they fish out of some radioactive pond in China and use as a thermal paste is a joke. So many RMA cases, time, money and environment could've been saved if manufacturers just used real paste. Imagine how many laptops getting bad review scores because of shitty thermals when in fact pretty much all of them (that of course do not have a bad thermal solution altogether) could be solved easily by just repasting with real compound. My PS4 and PS5 both sounded like jet fighters, because the factory "paste" was so bad that it wasn't able to transfer heat efficient enough making the sensors thinking its hotter than it actually was, turning the fans up to max. Now it's dead silent, hardly even ramps up anymore at all after a repaste. I just repasted my Legion 5, still analyzing it though.
