When Bo Burnham quotes T.S Elliot, he’s taking the opening lines from his most famous work: “The Lovesong of J. Alfred Prufrock.” And if you read the poem, it’s impressive how well it works with the message of this song. Good one, Bo.

realistically, I feel like it has to do with context, we know Bo Burnham is ironic in what he's doing so we oftentimes set the expectation a little lower, coupled by the fact that he's already talented, funny, and dedicates himself to what he's doing, so it turns out surprisingly good, which it definitely is.

Its so ironic, he actualy pulls of being hot right then, its sorta working on me. Its a perfect parody." And then at the end it reveals itself and you feel so violated. Its not just and a good music video and a great comentary, its a live demonstration of what he means.

When he shows the mother’s point of view, it’s a lot like the part in “white womans Instagram” where we hear her talk about how she misses her mom. It paints a perspective that allows us to understand the women rather than demonize her like we would the music industry, or demonize the participant of social media.

While I do think the affects of these types of songs have a heavier affect on women, I feel like people don't talk about the affects on men. All these male pop stars get described as the perfect teen, with beautiful eyes and the perfect face. @jemiu95253 жыл бұрын
@Halston it's especially rough when it's kids being essentially groomed to worship this industry's products. it's like the industry implants the demand for the supply they already made. media literacy & conscious consumerism are not taught as much as they should be to people, either (those can only do so much anyway). it can all be kind of discouraging, but hearing people like Bo discuss it on a stage makes it feel less all-powerful

This is such a smartly aware song, not only does it poke fun at the state of the music industry. Capitalising on the low self-esteem of young girls. It's all just consumerism. There's something much more sincere at the end here.

Reading the comments about Justin and Selena seeing this live, it makes me think about how this song isn't really even criticizing the artists themselves. It's the agents and the industry who pressure this type of material and it's the corporate greed. "We'll stop beating this dead horse when it stops spitting out money".

In *'We Think We Know You'* (the finale of *'what.'* ), the corporate manager mentions writing songs to appeal to the youth. He tells Bo to write about topics such as razor scooters. In this music video (which is quite literally about how corrupt the corporate music scene is, specifically when trying to appeal to young people), someone rides past on a scooter to high-five Bo. I cannot get over how clever this is and how much symbolism Bo can fit into an hour of comedic music. I'm sure there is so much more nobody has realised yet. He is just so insanely skilled. Bo is a comedy genius.

Bo Burnham was right all along. A 2024 study at the University of Innsbruck found the following after studying 12,000 songs between 1980 and 2024: “Put simply, songs with more choruses that repeat basic lyrics appear to be more popular.” “Lyrics should stick easier nowadays, simply because they are easier to memorise.”
