Repeating Rock Licks - Slash, Michael Schenker, Zakk Wylde Style
Play repeating high energy rock guitar licks in the style of guitar greats like Slash, Schenker, Zakk Wylde and others. I'll show you how to play 5 repeating rock licks and how to slip them into your guitar solos and kick your soloing up a gear. Sound good?
Here's a breakdown of what you learn:
0:15 Hear me solo using some of the repeating rock licks you're going to learn in this lesson. You might recognise some of them from the playing of guitar legends like Slash, Randy Rhoads, Michael Schenker, Zakk Wylde and others!
1:04 All these repeating licks are in the key of D minor and use the D minor pentatonic scale and the D blues scale. You'll learn both of these essential guitar scale shapes.
For more help check out my Essential Scales Playlist: • GUITAR SCALES: HOW TO ...
1:45 Repeating Rock Lick 1
Pretty much all the rock guitar legends play this repeating lick but Slash plays licks like this one a lot. It'll sound great slipped into your rock solos! It uses a bend on the B string then a triplet hammer and pull off sequence on the high E and B string. Watch for the picking tips here - they can make it easier to speed the lick up as fast as you want.
3:53 Repeating Rock Lick 2
This lick is a favourite of Michael Schenker - but everyone plays it. It's made up of a short 3 note sequence which we repeat 5 times. I like to alternate pick this repeating lick. Watch for the left hand muting tips to get the lick clean and fast!
6:15 Repeating Rock Lick 3
This lick is heard in the playing of Zakk Wylde and others using the blues scale for a dark and edgy sound. It's made up of 2 short 4 note fragments which we repeat 4 times each. Watch the picking for this and also experiment with the more left hand orientated approach I show you too. This takes a little practice but can help you hit the warp speed factor with this lick!
9:50 Repeating Rock Lick 4
This repeating rock lick uses the D blues scale and is played in sextuplet rhythm. I use my first 3 fingers to play this one - it's a great left hand legato practice exercise to help you develop finger independence in your fretting hand. Follow the palm muting guidelines here to get clean and sharp execution of this repeating rock lick.
12:48 Repeating Rock Lick 5
Another Zakk Wylde style lick! This lick uses the D blues scale but we're reaching up and grabbing a few higher note as well. Practice adding these notes into some of your favourite minor pentatonic licks - you'll be surprised at how many cool ideas you can discover!
15:18 What should you do with these repeating rock licks to get the most out of them and absorb them into your playing? I believe the most important thing is to practice not just playing them, but practice USING them! Put on a backing track or drum loop and practice looping them around, getting them in time and sounding crisp and clear. Then practice improvising and slotting them into your playing with other stuff you'd normally play. Experiment to see how to make them work best and also try to create some repeating rock licks of your own based on these.

Finally! Someone teaching realistic licks that sound good and that mere mortals can grasp, learn and play! Some of these instructors on YT think we're all born natural shredders with hyper-synced right and left hands. Pipe dreams for most. Excellent teaching video, mate. Keep it coming!

I don't get they way he is doing lick 3 though. Why not roll on the 10th fret, instead of constantly switching between e and b strings. I find it awkward to play like that at high speed. (the picked version). Also, if your using the middle finder to hit the 12th fret g string, that should be killing the e and b strings, so why switch strings every time? Just seems to make it harder for no reason. Am I missing something?
@paso193

@@James-qu6ul .........Watch his right hand. That's the key to this lick.
@James-qu6ul
@James-qu6ul 3 жыл бұрын
@@paso193 Oh I tried. I just don't understand what in fuck he is doing with that lick. I can play it decent my own way. But I don't understand what in hell he is doing and why. Spent like 5 hours trying to figure it out lol. Why not bar and roll on 10th and use middle finger and ring finger to kill strings as you're reaching? It's infinitely easier than switching between e and b strings individually each time. I was just trying to understand the reason for playing it that way, as its so much harder, there must be a reason.
@paso193
@paso193 3 жыл бұрын
@@James-qu6ul ...........There's different ways to play almost any type of lick. I'd say if you can "play it decently your own way" - then, for you, that's the best route, period. I see what you're saying with rolling on the 10th & using middle finger, etc. It's just another way of hitting it. The key is sticking with what you feel comfortable with. The lick will sound much better than trying to force his route on your hands.

Interestingly enough, after practicing your sets, I end up with the 5 note passages as follows. 12, 34, 5 12 34 5 just as you set up the 12 34 on two strings I just added the 5 on the top of the 3 and back to one. I thank you for allowing the practice public to gander your progressive licks and the opportunities to stylize them in such a wonderfull and easy progression. Even on an acoustic with heavy strings the 13 e string and the 17 b string bend wonderfully on the frets you use. simply outstanding. I do want your students to make hugh forward improvement as you have taught these. Simply an outstanding opportunity.

The process of learning this licks are very good, as long as you practice it in perfect form. Speed is demonstrated once you can perform the technical form of these without flaw in execution and tone variations. I found that on regular guitar, in to a normal amp with one gain pedal, Its ease of application is evident. But, on amps with high gain and pedals with high gain, that allow sustain to hold in large quantities of time. This is a process of real perfection to get the tones correct.

In the past several months, I ve carefully come to the realization that clear and clean, in reference to guitar notes and the value of audience, say more in silence than a herd of folks will say in a roaring saloon. So clean and crystal clean phrasing, no slop no mess and no loud drone or squeal lasting longer the a dot. James give all you have to the students that need to learn. And even more to those who want to learn. I feel better when I think that students do it right. So they can become the master of the stroke and leader of the pack. Enjoy your ears James, I always do when Listening to new lessons and new phrases not in the least bit does it matter how long or how fresh or how good. I love it all.

Move on to the B string now and pull off 13 to 10. Then move onto G string and sliide 13 down to 12, pull it off to 10. Then play 12 and end with some wide vibrato. Hope that helps...if you can't quite get it then make up something simialr of your own using this description as a rough guide. I am truly amused now James, I ve been turned into a fret monsther....My 5 pattern turned into a 8, 9. and even a 10 note passage, repeated intervals on 3 strings. All because, you broke it to a single double, a double single and the variety of there to in different sring repeats. You ve created another eddie. or Joe, or something. Now to get it to the even and odd pattern beat. and the repeat string opportunity changing from one to three different strings. I hope you ve had a great day. I ve found note groove. thanks for taking me out of the 70s and skynyrd protocol.

+Voxboy876 Hi there. Thanks...glad you enjoyed the lesson. More at jamesshipwayguitar.com by the way! Anyway...it's a Harley Benton Les Paul copy. Damned cheap guitar...but I'll tell you it's one of the best I've ever owned, and I've had some pretty expensive gear in the past. Don't know how it can be so good for the price - it should be junk! Check them out if you're after a nice Gibson copy...their SG's are great too. Hope that answers your question. Cheers! James

hey hi how do you mute strings when switching strings quickly, i am good at it when playing normally but at high speed the string above the stings that i bend rings....
@JamesShipwayGuitar
@JamesShipwayGuitar 8 жыл бұрын
Hi there, the secret is to check you're muting any bass strings with your picking hand. Then check your fretting fingers are touching the strings either side of the one you are playing. If you're touching the string above the one you're bending it should not ring out. Takes a little practice but that's how it's done. Hope that's clear...if not ask me again. Cheers, James

Why dont you use the litle finger while doing the scales my friend?
@JamesShipwayGuitar
@JamesShipwayGuitar 8 жыл бұрын
Hi there. I often do use my little finger for playing scales and licks, but not so much these blues/pentatonic kind of licks. I did used to do it that way until I noticed that a lot of players who sounded better than me weren't! I find it easier to stretch up with my 3rd finger lots of the times and fnd the licks sound more punchy, faster and easier to play! Thanks for watching, James

@JamesShipwayGuitar
@JamesShipwayGuitar 7 жыл бұрын
Hi John. You need to move the scale shape into whichever key you need and then find the lick 'hiding' inside the scale pattern. This is a great skill for building out your soloing skills and a vocabulary. This video will help you move the scale shapes around if you need a hand with this: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fNqPqNh_mNSUfWQ.html Also you'll find lots more at my website: jamesshipwayguitar.com Maybe see you there sometime and good luck with the licks. Hi James ..your lessons Amazing... But I can't create a new licks with Backing tracks...pls help me
@JamesShipwayGuitar
@JamesShipwayGuitar 6 жыл бұрын
Hi there and thanks for watching. Playing with a backing track takes practice and making up new licks on the spot does too! Just start with a slow track to make it easier and try to play some simple licks...they don't have to be amazing. We all have to start somewhere, and when you hear a great player they only got that way after a lot of practice and experimentation. Also...always try to keep the rhythm solid, super important. But above all, start slow and make it easy for yourself to start with. Hope this helps you out, good luck! James

James what about a 5 note triplet.... going 1 2 3 4 5 in a syncopated 5 ....I don't see it being done at all. But the modern speed metal has several variations to that staccato beat in the count up to 7 or 8. Filling a quick pace with a slow off center beat on the 3 and the 5.....I m not sure I m saying it right but I took one of the multi layered beats you gave us here and stepped out to the 5......but in a 4/4 or other even bar beat it doesn't set well. In the speed pace it fits because there in multi layered beats inside the pattern as a whole. I m asking if the 5 3 /2 is a normal pattern in modern mode.
@JamesShipwayGuitar
@JamesShipwayGuitar 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Jed. Sounds cool what you've been doing! Groups of 5 aren't as common as 4 and 3 note groups like you say - but you can sure make them work with a bit of experimentation. It's the sort of thing you'd hear a band like Dream Theatre do and some of the other more adventurous rock and metal bands. Keep having fun with it! j

+Ken Skid Hi Ken - thanks for your question. You're pretty much right - get the lick together at a slow speed and then gradually speed it up over time. Push yourself to get it faster but also work on anything in the kick that is holding you up at a slower speed. Check out my How To Play Faster lesson. It's one of my first videos , production not brilliant but shows you some cool ways to get faster. Here's the link: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jLWli7h2xpjXlXk.html God luck mate! James

+Ken Skid Cool Ken. All the songs and blues based playing is more important in my opinion! But a bit of speed definitely is an effective soloing tool so go for it. Focus on getting faster at things you're going to use lots would be my advice - then easy to slot some quicker ideas into your playing. Have fun and join my mailing list for members only lessons (just grab one of my KZfaq books to join). Cheers! James
