Hello,
This video shows how to replace valve cover gaskets on your car/truck. The truck shown in this video is a 1990 Ford Bronco with the 5.8L engine, this technique will be similar to many 80s to 90s Ford Vehicles.

Replacing the valve cover gaskets on this truck fixed the burnt oil smell I had, I could smell the burnt oil every time I came to a stop. Let me know if you have any questions regarding this repair.

87 f150 5.0L here...122K miles ....both my valve cover gaskets were puking oil....1st job I had to do. I will be putting in new reman fuel injectors and if time permits I'll clean and repaint my valve covers. Your videos are AWESOME.

The Fix - That EGR pipe can be a hard sucker to get loose. I used WD40 , and PB Blaster for 2 days - no luck. I then ordered a small can of KROIL from AMZ. Put a 6" piece of weed eater Fuel line on the end of the nozzle so you can get to tight spots with out waste. This KROIL is expencive !(18.83 for 8oz)- we used it on JET Engine exhaust bolts -only thing that worked. After 2 hours of soaking The EGR pipe came off. Work all rusty exhaust or otherwise bolts back and forth to loosen without breaking or stripping.

One thing about replacing gaskets, never ever ever ever ever ever ever ever never ever ever ever ever ever ever use silicone on a paper or cork gasket it will turn to mush and will start leaking. Member silicone sealers is supposed to be used without the gasket. If you really need to put some groups on your gasket use aviation permatex

I just replaced the valve cover gaskets on a 1988 E150 van with the 5.8L: pure phun, no vertical, no easy way to do it. Just time and wrenches. Oh, and those dang vacuum hoses everywhere....

For future ref... once u get all that stuff off...u can easily reach that awad / hidden bolt with a hex key if u dont have a 2 foot extension...and once ur that far why wouldnt u pull the intake and replace the gasket ??? That is the main leak on 302 and 351...put u a nice bead of silicone on the china walls

Where did you get the new harness? If you rebuilt it where did you get the plugs all of mine are burnt from the heat and cracked. Thanks great videos..

The harness is original, not rebuilt. You can find them used online on eBay.

Now that’s a coincidence, what engine are you working on? Cleaning the valve covers was by far the hardest part for me.

Did you install some new vacuum lines on there? If so, where’d you get them? Mine are so brittle they snap any time I have to move them

Thank you, These are the original l lines. I have has to replace a couple of the ac hard lines, you can get hard vacuum lines at local parts store in the black color, online they are more colors to choose from. You can heat them and bend them as desired. You can also find a used set online eBay.

Just to make sure, you didn't to do anything with the coolant system, correct? i.e. drain/refill coolant

Correct, you may get a small amount of spillage from the coolant bypass hose, but not much if you keep the hose tied away.

What do you do if you have no vacuum to the EGR ? EVP EGR EVR are all new . Still no vacuum to the eye , all sensors are fine and get vacuum line holds vacuum when hooked up to the EGR. It’s as if the solenoid isn’t responding, or the computer not telling it to .

You do not get but a very small amount of vac at the EGR valve at idle. The small amount you may get is what little bit of suction that get thru the felt disc inside of the EVR.

What sandpaper did you use to remove the old pain?

I used 180 grit dry sandpaper, I do not recommend wet sanding as these will rust very fast.

What’s your tip for getting the gasket to stay in place during install?

The gasket I used can hold the bolt in place. I placed the gasket onto the valve cover, fed two bolts through the cover and into the gasket. Once the cover is in place I thread the two bolts into the head and follow with the rest of the bolts.

@@TheFixTech I made 3 set of studs 1/4, 5/16, 3/8 and cut a slot in the top for a common screw driver. Insert them in your primary part, lay the gasket over the studs, put the part on and a few bolts, then use a common screw driver to remove the alignment studs. Long set screws will work too.

I would love to ask you a few questions about my 1989 bronco . Like when I start it the engine will rev up and down like 3 or 4 times before idle. Is that normal ? Or vacuum ? Or electrical . I can’t figure it out at all.

Get the engine to operating temp, pull diagnostic codes, Check/replace the iac valve. Also check engine vacuum should be between 16-20hg. If lower then possible vacuum line leak and or intake plenum gasket leak or intake manifold gasket leak.

I have no vacuum on the egr line . When I throttle up the needle doesn’t move at all . I have checked everything . I put a new egr , evp, and evr , and there is still no vacuum for the egr

Check the vapor canister silanoid valve . When starting the computer wants to open valve to retrieve gas vapor and then valve closes.

@@CorySpitzer-xs5jy EGR does not get vac at idle. If you hold 2000rpm and still get no vac check for broken vac line. Try a new vac hose direct from manifold to EVR then EVR to EGR. If no vac at 2000rpm, then I think you have a bad EVR. Check vac from maniflod too. There is a spare vac outlet on the manifold vac tree.
