Replace Hayward Manual Air Relief Valve Assembly THE RIGHT WAY

This video shows how to replace the Manual Air Relief (MAR) Valve on a Hayward Pro-Grid DE filter. It is a fairly simple process. You'll need a screwdriver (flat), and a strap wrench. If you don't have a strap wrench, you can use a very big pair of pliers on the flats on the sides of the Manual Air Relief Valve. You may also need an open-end wrench for the gauge in the MAR.
The Valve is held in bayonet-style, it's a quarter turn to unlock, lift out the old assembly. Replace the o-ring on top of the filter, lube it up, as well as the o-ring on the new valve, and push the new one down, quarter turn to lock.
It's also a great idea to not only backwash your filter FIRST before starting, but to remove the bung at the bottom of the filter, this will allow old DE and other detritus to drain out. While the MAR is removed, you might want to take the opportunity to use the hose to spray down the inside of the filter.

Thank you so very much for making this video. Our air filter assembly blew apart. Called several pool Companies and they are back logged for weeks to come out. Need our pool now. It’s 113 degrees hot. This was a life saver video on how to change and saved on huge repair bill. 😁

Thanks! This showed me exactly how to do mine. Until I saw your video, I wasn't even sure I had a Hayward. It's so old that all the labels have faded or fell off.

That valve is fine. The rest of the filter, I don't know. I'm going to have to open it up REALLY soon now and take a look at the filter grids and see if they're shot. I'm hoping they are, then I can just replace them, and it also makes sense why it was so hard to get the pool clean last year. If not, I don't know yet.

At least the 12 years I've been here. I *might* have been told they were replaced once by the previous owners who burned holes in them with too much chlorine.

Well done! Only one suggestion. After you sprayed the grids off, wouldn't it be better to put it in Backwash mode while running it with the drain open?

Shouldn't make a difference either way, it just switches the input/output of the filter. I could have done that in addition to what I did, but the water was flowing pretty clear out of the drain at that point.

Sure, mine is a DE4820. I have several other videos on it showing how to take it apart and remove and replace the grid assembly.

Thx for the vid….but why remove the pressure gauge just to screw it back in? It came pre wrapped with tape already, so that seems like an unnecessary step.

The gauge is a delicate instrument. It's removed just in case to keep it from getting damaged. How'd you like to install the new assembly and end up with a broken or bent gauge? Probably not. Takes a few seconds.

4:21 Look at the size of that guy's hands. The force he uses is what I had to use also on mine. It shouldn't be that hard to twist. One thing that might be wrong is after market O-rings that are slightly too thick. Leslie's sells the genuine Hayward o-rings for $42, an astonishing rip-off and enough reason to switch brands away from Hayward. They also sell a "Leslie's" brand O-ring for 1/3rd that price. When you assemble your air cap, lube the o-rings with more lube than usual and that may help future disassembly.

Yeah I have big hands. My wife has small hands, which is great because it makes _ME_ look bigger. This was the original air-relief valve on this filter, never removed or replaced before, so it was all original with genuine Hayward parts. These days, Hayward parts are a ripoff. So are the prices at Leslie's, even with their own brand stuff. Online, you can find a plethora of (mostly) compatible, off-brand parts that will save you an absolute fortune.

Nice try--it was my dad's and he loaned it to me for this job. It was promptly returned. I'm also a firm believer in returning borrowed things in BETTER condition than I borrowed them.

4:21 Putting that much force on the filter may be abusing your plumbing. Abused plumbing might be very bad, so it might be prudent to remove the lid and twist the cap off without torquing the entire filter. the filter body is not screwed into the pavement, it's just sitting there, so The only thing keeping it from twisting is your plumbing.

There's no way the strap wrench is going to snap 2-in PVC pipes. If it had a 6-foot handle, oh yes. Removing the lid would have been an idea, and also a lot more work.
