For under $200, buy all 4 cloneable TPMS sensors to avoid having to visit the dealer to relearn new sensors (for vehicles that don't automatically learn new sensors).
If this has helped you, please consider donating. Any amount is helpful.
Donate: paypal.me/gabeluci
When you clone your TPMS sensors, you vehicle doesn't even know they were replaced! Use this if you are replacing a broken TPMS sensor, or if you want to install new ones.
This is also the perfect solution for adding a new set of sensors to your winter tires.
www.gabeshacks.com/2016/10/ho...
I'm doing this for my 2009 Honda Odyssey EX-L, but the principles apply to any supported vehicle.
Subaru owners have reported trouble reading the sensors while installed in the tires. If you have a Subaru, you may have to open your tires and physically read the code.
Since I posted this video, Autel has released a new sensor that works on both 315MHz and 433MHz called the "1-Sensor", so you don't need to worry about which frequency your vehicle works on.
To figure out if these sensors will work with your vehicle, go to this page, click on "Downloads" and download the document called "TS508_V6.19_FunctionList_" that ends with the two-letter code for the global market you are in ("US" for North America): www.maxitpms.com/tpmscms/prod...
That spreadsheet will also tell you whether your vehicle automatically learns new TPMS sensors. If it says "A", then you do not need programmable sensors at all. Just buy any compatible sensor that works on the right frequency for your vehicle.
You can order the programmable MX sensors online:
eBay (shipped from China): ebay.to/2ZkR8xb
Amazon.com (shipped from US): amzn.to/3CIEwyC
And the programmer:
Autel MaxiTPMS PAD (eBay - from China): ebay.to/3zCgwLw
Here is my follow up video about installing these: • Install New TPMS Senso...

Hey Gabe: I saw two of your videos about the purchase of your universal TPMS monitors, and their programming and installation. It was a really great and simple presentation, and I learned a lot. I am about to purchase a set of 4 tires and wanted to learn about how the TPMS monitors work, and you gave me a "can do" simple and thoughtful way of either doing it myself, or knowing enough to get the proper help from a good tire technician, so I can get exactly what I want without getting ripped off. Thanks for your lesson. It was really great. Keep up the good work, Dan

I have a 2009 F150 FX4 and I just spoke to the dealership about getting this done. The cost is outrageous!!! $96 just for each sensor then the cost of mounting and balancing the new tires and the cost for programming each tire! So, if I was to get it done there it would cost around $550 and I already have the new tires and new rims so I'm seriously looking at doing this myself. Thanks for this video! You may have just saved me $400 plus!!!

Thanks Gabe. Insight to Nissan Versa Owners. I have a 2010 hatchback that I struggled hours to get the pad to read. I even dismounted the tire to read the sensor. I found out that if you smack the tire with a rubber hammer to "wake up" the sensor it would report to the test on the sensor. Only by accident did I figure this out. I hope this helps somebody. Great video anyway.

Good to know! Another way can be to drive your car for a bit, then read them within a few minutes of stopping. They have a centrifugal switch inside that turns them on when the wheel turns, then they stay on for a few minutes before shutting off.

Thanks for the informative video - it helped me make up my mind about what to do. I have 2 comments that may be helpful to viewers: 1) after the first new sensor has been programmed, the PAD may read it instead of the next old one sitting on the PAD! Even 25 feet away with a wall in between! Not all old sensors will be marked with the ID code - but if it is, make sure the PAD reads the sensor in place as opposed to the new one just programmed. If the ID code is not on the old sensor, move the computer/PAD a very long ways from the sensor already programmed to read the other old sensors! 2) If you inadvertently programmed a sensor with a duplicated ID number because of 1), and have filled the tire with air, you can reprogram it with the correct ID number without removing the tire or the sensor. Jack the car up to support it, bleed down to 0 PSI and wait a few minutes, then place the PAD on the sidewall near the sensor to reprogram. Because the car I was working on did not indicate which tire was low, I accepted the idea that the sensors all had the same ID number - and this was wrong. The PAD was actually reading the same new sensor over and over - until the last old one was read. Then, I knew I was in trouble!!

Is it possible to scan a programmable sensor for the code after you have programmed it, so if I want to buy new wheels and sell my cars original wheels, if I get rid of my original sensor will it be okay if I have the programmable sensor already programmed . Can I scan those programmable sensors and program another set of programmable sensors.

I am very happy to see this video, I own a car that is 2013, and to have 1 sensor replaced would cost me $180! (r/r sensor + programming) for 1 tire! Unbelieveable! I am rewatching your video again to learn how to use this. Where I live most name brand auto shops will not allow you to bring in your own parts to have them install, they want their money, even if i am getting new tires on my car, they won't swap out the tpms even if its already programmed by me. I had to call around all the local non-branded shops and found a guy willing to remove my "bad" sensor with a new one (must be programmed as he won't do it) for $20.

Hey Gabe I really appreciate your video on this. I have a 2009 Dodge Ram 1500 and I have had a bad sensor in one tire for months. I ordered the pad and a sensor and put it in today. Works great. I had taken my truck to Pep Boys and they wanted $178.00 to replace one sensor. For around $70.00 I got the pad and a sensor. Only downside is the pad doesn't work to check the sensors on the tire. Once I took off the bad sensor I checked it with the pad and the sensor fail so I knew I had the right sensor. I got the number off the old sensor and programmed it to the new sensor put it on the rim and the TPMS light went off before I got to the end of my road.

Snow tires went on, put the car into learning mode (google it, it's easy) programmed each tire with the tool, and done. Whole process took about 2 minutes.

This procedure is known as "cloning". It works great when you can trigger the current sensor that you want to clone. In some instances where the sensor has gone dead with a bad battery or internal failure the cloning procedure will not work. When this happens you can either access the body control module (BCM) of the vehicle and access the sensor codes that are written there or you can simply create your own code with the new sensor and then write the new sensor code to the BCM. The equipment shown in this video will NOT do these procedures and a reader that has OBD-2 capability will be required.
@GabesHacks
@GabesHacks 2 жыл бұрын
That is true. But the other option is if you remove the dead sensor, you can read the code that is printed on the sensor itself, which I discussed at 4:37

Good job in your educating process. Mine are aftermarket that the tire shop said they could not get the light off after installing 4 new tires and aftermarket sensors I brought them that were tailored to the 2008 Dodge Truck I have. I think they only tried to Reprogram them after installation instead of connecting the OBD2 under the dash and doing a relearn. May heave been using older equipment. They wanted $215 to install their own.
@GabesHacks
@GabesHacks 2 жыл бұрын
If that $215 was for all four, then that's not to bad considering some of the prices I've seen people quote in these comments. But yeah, if you already gave them new sensors, then they should have been able to get them working one way or another.

Gabe, again nice video and thanks for trying to answer a few questions I had. I learned something that might also help someone else watching your video. I had heard that you couldn't clone the Autel from the OEM if there are alloy wheels (which my 2016 Rogue has). It also don't have the auto-learn feature, so I emailed Autel and they were very helpful. Here's what I was told: These units are not designed to read from a mounted, static TPMS. In order for it to get it to read/clone is to click the "Test" while the pad is close to the original TPMS. Then, quickly start to deflate of the tire. It will give you the same "successful test" as laying in on the pad. Now, he wasn't specific how much had to be deflated and since I didn't have a good compressor I held off until I got one. So, yesterday, I did this and IT WORKED!! The only problem was, that when going back and checking the new units, I found there were two units with duplicate IDs. I wondered that since the deflate initiated transmission, how long would the transmission last and could my test of the next tire actually be reading the prior tire as it was close enough to read. So, last night I re-tested and just copied each ID and "created" the TPMS's. I waited about an hour between each test and it solved the duplication. It may only take 10 minutes in between, but I wanted to make certain I didn't have a bad unit. Now that I have the Nissan ID's, I only need to create any future replacements (just making sure I keep tabs on which unit ID is where due to rotation, etc. Like you, I am creating a winter tire/rim set. The nice thing is that the TPMS will be easy to install and now my only challenge is getting the new tires mounted on the new wheels. Thanks again for the video and I am impressed with the Autel setup and major savings from buying or having TPMS's initialized at the dealer or tire shop. So, maybe someone else with alloy tires or just having problems might try the deflate method. Oh, btw, the test completed it pretty quickly, losing only 5psi or less on each tire.

Thank you Gabe's Hack for the video. This is not directed toward your effort. Anyone reading this, please invest in real TPMS parts that actually work. The pad sucks and does not read any existing sensor on the car (Nissan Maxima 2009), Digging forums and videos, some say lower pressure to 20psi so it reads the original sensors, not gonna mess with my car for a faulty pad sorry, I received 2 of the "geniusly" designed combined autel 315mhz 433mhz (could not find the 315mhz only) that can not be programmed, I have an appointment to install my new tires tomorrow and theae shit sensors that I received today fail to test (both), says programmed but test fail! SMH. I'm returning them to Amazon for a refund, though time spent will never be refunded!
@GabesHacks
@GabesHacks 5 жыл бұрын
I get it: the PAD isn't actually designed to read a sensor inside a tire, it just happens to do so. Although it does seem like it doesn't have what it takes to wake up a sensor that is off - that's what letting the air out might do. But you can also drive the car for a minute to wake them up and try to read them within a couple minutes of stopping. As long as you know the existing sensors are actually good. As for the new dual-frequency sensors, I hope that software update for the PAD comes as soon as they say.

I also needed to reposition the PAD receiver a bunch of times until a got a reading. By the way...I downloaded the latest software before I started. Just wish it wasn't a zipped file. I just want to add that a lot of Subaru owners are looking for solutions like this. Subaru vehicles come with bare-bone TPMS system that can only store 4 IDs at a time and that's it. If you need to have the system relearn TPMS IDs (e.g., swapping out to Winter set), it can only be done by a special tool at dealership. So if you have more than one set of wheels, your options were: 1) pay dealership $75 every time you swap out wheels 2) buy the relearn tool yourself $$$ and reset system every time you swap out 3) ignore TPMS warning lights This has frustrated a lot of Subaru owners because they tend to be the folks who keep extra set of wheels (Snow, Winter, All-terrain, etc). In this context your cloning solution is the best: a bit extra up-front cost (actually not that expensive - $25 per cloneable sensor beats a lot of non-clonable sensors), and you don't need to waste time and money in the long run, and you have working TPMS system.

Well i am finding all you have to do if they are 315 mhz or 433 mhz is replace them. The computer will automatically learn them in a 20 minute drive. Discovered that when the sensor battery went dead. spent all that money for a programer that was not really needed. If you want to use the code that came with the car or truck you can read it anr reset the code. In most cases if the battery is dead you have to read the code if it is still readable then you can use that code if you want or just replace and take a ride. all of a sudden it start working because it reprogramed itself to the code on the one you put in it. Worked on my 07 Jeep.
@GabesHacks
@GabesHacks 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, there are three different types of cars when it comes to TPMS: 1. Cars that will automatically learn new sensors 2. Cars that require programming to learn new sensors, and 3. Cars that have a relearn procedure that has to be manually triggered for it to learn new sensors (sometimes without any special tools) So it's important to learn how your car handles TPMS before you start anything. My Honda Odyssey requires programming to learn new sensors, which is why I decided to go with the programmable sensors instead.

Great video. One question, if I am understanding this correctly, you are cloning the new sensors so that the cars computer sees them as the original ones?
@GabesHacks
@GabesHacks 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, exactly. :) This applies only to those vehicles that have a static list of TPMS sensor codes that can only be changed by a programming tool. Other vehicles can automatically learn new sensors, so this process isn't needed for those.

Hi Gabe, This is a great video. I read your description and some of the comments that this TPMS pad may not read ID's from sensors in the tires of Subaru's. To avoid this, I plan on purchasing the maxitpms ts501. I know the ts501 come with the ODB connector, which makes it easier to get ID's from the ECU. However, do you know if this tool will still have a difficult time reading the ID's from sensors in the tires? This option will be beneficial when rotating wheels around. By the way, i have 2013 forester. Thanks!

I couldn't tell you, sorry. I have no experience with the TS501, or Subaru's for that matter. But in some other comments, others have said that they had success letting air out of the tire first, which essentially wakes up the sensor, then they were able to read it with the PAD.

You can also read the sensor codes from the car's computer if you have a scanner tool that can do that. My purpose for doing this was to create a second identical set for my winter tires. If you're doing the same, then you _must_ have the old codes one way or another (from the sensors or from the car's computer). If you just need to replace dead sensors, then you could buy any compatible sensor and program the car with the new code instead.

@GabesHacks
@GabesHacks 6 жыл бұрын
Stephen Nikolaiczuk The sensors themselves are pretty dumb. They just report the pressure to the vehicle. It's you vehicle that decides when to turn the light on. I've read that some vehicles can be programmed to set the light at a different pressure, but most won't let you change it. It'll only turn the light on when a tire is dangerously low (like around 20psi) You'll have to do some research on your specific vehicle. But even if it's possible to change, you'll need a special scanner tool to do it, and you'd have to change it each time you change your tires.

Each wheel has its own code, yes. However, in my van, there is only one receiver for all four sensors, so the van has no idea which wheels are where. So rotating doesn't matter. I ended up ordering the TS 508 Autel tool since I had another vehicle where I need a relearn and the tire shop wants $35 for a relearn that's whether you get a new sensor or sensors or not I was able to program the already installed sensor on my one vehicle with the leaky sensor that was replaced and then did a relearn with the tool since I had TPMS spelled out on my display not the horseshoe. Then I had to wake all the sensors on my other vehicle and do a relearn with the tool. The former was 2010 Honda Odyssey LX and the other was a 2008 Altima. Both are now clear of any TPMS issues. The tool on ebay was $99 but does a lot more than the pad and is independent of the PC with the exception of updates which are free lifetime. Tire shops in my area use Autel so if they are junk I would think they would get a lot of complaints which I asked and their response was no...we will see down the road. The Autel TS 508 will read OEM sensor codes no matter what make but you can only program Autel Sensors with it. The difference in tire pressure won't matter. The computer is programmed to throw a warning light when it gets below a set pressure, usually around 20psi. The F150 does seem to have a TPMS reset procedure (see page 238 of the owner's manual: www.fordservicecontent.com/Ford_Content/catalog/owner_guides/09f12og3e.pdf) but it does seem to require a special tool that it says should be in your glove box (this guys has a video of the procedure: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/a8Wnat2cvdyZqKc.html). If that's true, then you don't really need to buy programmable sensors like I did. You can buy any compatible sensors (F150 uses 315MHz sensors) and then do the reset procedure.

I ask because I bought a full size spare that doesn't have a sensor and I am thinking of having a local tire shop to put it in for me but they don't have the PAD.

Well, you could program it before giving it to them to install. But I don't think it will work the way you hope. The point of programming the sensor is to have it match an ID that the car already recognizes. But you can only program the spare with 1 of the 4, and any of your four tires could go flat, and it may not be the one you programmed into the spare. It is worth checking if your car automatically detects new sensors, because in that case you don't need to do any programming at all.

Thanks for the video. Regrettably, my tire shop failed to reprogram before installing the sensors.... I'll not say which national chain it was... Question: in addition to reading codes from sensors already in the tire... can you reprogram sensors already in the tire? Thanks, Ed

I haven't tried it, but it might work. Did the shop install programmable sensors? What year/model car do you have?
@Rhythmfiddle
@Rhythmfiddle 6 жыл бұрын
My ignorance here. I supplied them with a set of Mobiletron sensors which are advertised as being programmable and meeting all the current standards. The shop's tool was not the most up to date, and I'm suspecting that it wasn't adapted to work with the asian market cars. Figured if it didn't work, I'd just buy an ATEQ Quickset tool and reprogram the car to match the sensors (I wrote down all the codes). And still I would come out ahead of Toyota which wanted over $900 to sell me four sensors and reprogram. Might take a chance on the $50 reprogram tool and hope the Mobiletron sensors aren't proprietary. All in all this process is more a "Fun" project than a serious endeavour. Got to have something to amuse myself in retirement !

Yeah, I can't say if the Autel programmer can program other brands. It's a gamble.Earlier this year I bought a Foxwell NT510, which is fairly inexpensive compared to other tools that can do the same thing. It's a bi-directional tool, and I'm pretty sure it can program the TPMS codes - I'll try when I get home tonight. But it has the added benefit of being able to read all the other systems of the car (SRS, body, ODB II) as long as you buy it with the software for your manufacturer. That might depend on your car though - whether they support it. Here are links for the NT510: goo.gl/vuvTBm or amzn.to/2EPliZU

YES - but... You can only programme a sensor when the tire pressure is less than 70 kpa (about 10 psi?) so they tires will have to be partially deflated and then re-inflated afterwards.

Михайло Чорний From what I can find, the CR-V is much the same as my Odyssey. There is only one receiver for all 4 sensors. So the car had no way to know which sensor is on which tire. So rotating them won't make a difference.

hi Gabe, after you clone the existing tpms code and use new sensors on winter tires, will the car ECU pick it up automatically? thx.

Yes. Since the new sensors in the winter tires have the same codes as the old sensors, the car's computer will have no idea that anything changed.

What does S. O and copy only mean on the spreadsheet codes? My 2009 says copy only so can I use this kit to program new ones? After programming does the vehicle still need to relearn the new sensors? Or do I just use the relearn/reset procedure in the car manual
@GabesHacks
@GabesHacks 5 жыл бұрын
The top of the spreadsheet says S = "Stationary" and O = "OBD". I assume "OBD" means the car can be programmed through the ODB port. I don't really know what Stationary means though. "Copy only" maybe means that you can't program the vehicle at all, or maybe just that Autel's tools can't do it. But cloning a sensor always works. The car won't be able to tell the difference between an original sensor and a cloned one because they both have the same code. So cloning a sensor means you don't have to program the car.

My summer and winter tires have two different pressures. How does the monitor know the correct pressure from one set to another?
@GabesHacks
@GabesHacks 6 жыл бұрын
Stephen Nikolaiczuk It doesn't know the difference. The car turns the light on when the pressure drops below a specific value. What that value is depends on the car, but it's usually a value that's too low for any tire.

Hi Gabe, Very nice video! How did you make sure that Autel MX 315 will work with your 2009 Odyssey? I have a 2007 Honda Odyssey EX and wanted to know if these sensors would work with mine. Can you share your thoughts? Regards Mukul

Yours will probably be 315MHz too, but in the description of this video, there is a link to Autel's website where they have a document that will tell you. Select the right one for your continent (US, Europe or Asia) and look up your vehicle.

Great video. Question, I just had my dealer pull of my winter tires and rims which have the OEM TPMS in it. I supplied them with new aftermarket rims and TPMS. They installed them, but then told me they couldn't program the TPMS's which may result in my SUV showing a warning message. If I can scan my winter tires which are marked and get the id value, can I then do the opposite and hold the scanner over my summer rims and TPMS and write the value to the sensor? I'm thinking that should work, if it can read it, it should be able to write it. Let me know what you think. Thank you from another Canuck :)
@GabesHacks
@GabesHacks 3 жыл бұрын
To write a new code to a sensor, the sensor has to be a "programmable" sensor. Most sensors are not. And if it is programmable, the scan tool must be able to program that brand of sensors (usually the same brand as the scan tool).

Hi Gage I have a quick question about the Maxi TMPS pad. Does it program only Autel sensors or I can program any programmable sensors from any manufacture? And how long did it took you to get all these shipped from China? Thanks!
@GabesHacks
@GabesHacks 7 жыл бұрын
They can only program Autel sensors. Shipping time will depend on which country you're in and which shipping method you use. I'm in Canada and shipping from overseas to Canada has been taking a long time - but it's the fault of Canada Post. Tracking will show it in Canada, and then it disappears for a month or more before getting delivered. I've learned I can pay a couple extra dollars sometimes and have things shipped by ePacket, which is much, much faster. From what I read online, things are better in the US. Usually just a couple weeks to get things from China via regular post.
@GabesHacks
@GabesHacks 7 жыл бұрын
If you're looking on eBay, read the "Shipping" section of the item description. Sometimes it will say exactly what shipping method they use. For example, this seller says they always ship ePacket for US buyers: "If you are buy from USA, we will ship by e-packet. It will reach to you in 7-12 working days." goo.gl/wcBazM
