Today’s feature is a guy many had a lot of expectations for entering the NBA, none more than Pistons then president and general manager Joe Dumars, who selected Stuckey 15th overall in 2007 as the inevitable replacement for 2004 NBA finals MVP Chauncey Billups. Expectations exceeding in hindsight, but at the time Stuckey fit the mold of what Joe Dumars and Detroit would covet, for their physical, hard hat and lunch pale culture. A guy that presented that physical advantage at 6’5 every night over point guards in the league at the time, with and NBA champion, finals mvp, and possible future HOFer to study and learn from every day in the same locker room, and an organization highly invested in seeing him become a cornerstone for their franchise going forward, and opportunity fully invested in him to become exactly what he was meant to be. I remember that time in the NBA, and all everyone could talk about was how Rodney Stuckey was the next Dwayne Wade and a soon replacement for Mr big shot. After just 2 games his second year, Detroit made Stuckey the starting point guard, trading Chauncey Billups to the Nuggets for Allen Iverson. Stuckey didn't become what many thought after the departure of the legend Chauncey Billiups. What happened? Replacing A Legend: Rodney Stuckey Stunted Growth Story

It's crazy how things are now compared to how they were done back then.Chauncey was only 31 when he got traded when he was still a capable scorer,effective leader n top 10 point guard for a few more years.Idk how detroit thought Chauncey was done so soon when it wouldn't be a question to keep him at age 31 by today's standard of basketball.This why I tell ppl they can't use today's standard to judge older basketball moves n situations

Stuckey is one of those love him or hate him guys. As a Pistons fan, we had no choice and he played like a solid role player. Sometimes that’s all your team needs. Our defense was still the best, and our bench (if continually built the right way) could help give us the edge. I’m a firm believe that Dumars was better at trading for talent than he was at drafting and building it up. He stuck gold with Billups, Sheed, Rip, and Wallace, but neglected the team after that brilliance.

Die hard pistons fan. Born and raised in Detroit. I remember all of this. Watched it unfold. The keys were given to stuckey waaay too soon. The franchise still hasn’t been the same since trading Chauncey. It started with Ben Wallace going to the bulls but trading Chauncey was hit to the stomach. Stuckey was a solid NBA player but there was no way he could’ve filled Chauncey’s shoes.

I think Dumars didn’t realize that when he got Rip, Billups, Sheed, Wallace, and Tayshaun, that he stuck gold due to all of them being specialist at something. They already crafted and molded talents separately, but when put together, created a winning team. It’s why Tayshaun fit so well. His scouting and drafting was some of the bottom 3 worst in that era, so it doesn’t surprise me that he couldn’t replicate that success through the draft.

@@Ohh_Really yes sir!! I’m still a die hard fan. All the way back to the Grant hill days before the teal lol. I’ll never forget when stuckey showed some signs in the ‘08 ECF against Boston, i had a feeling at that moment that Chauncey’s days were numbered. Fast forward to the ‘08-‘09 season, i was at that last game before he got traded. Couldn’t believe it. We haven’t recovered yet.

@IcebergSlim03
@IcebergSlim03 9 ай бұрын
@@sosmooth13 he didn’t realize it at all. I can kind of understand why he left Ben walk because they were all aging but they were still getting to the ECF. You let Ben walk and the WHOLE identity of the team changed. They were a defensive team but once they added flip Saunders(R.I.P.), they focused on offense more and Ben didn’t like that. Once Ben walked after the ‘05-‘06 season, i knew it was over. Joe could’ve paid Ben though even though he was aging.
