Replacing A Worn Out Toyota / Lexus Steering Wheel

In this video I opted to replace the steering wheel on the GX470 with a sport steering wheel off of eBay. This option was less expensive than having my old steering wheel reupholstered. It also looks and feels much better than the factory wheel. You only need a t30 torx screwdriver, a phillips screwdriver, and a 19mm socket to remove and replace your steering wheel.

Just did this on my car. Mad props on the video. Rarely see upgrade vids for gx470s. Makes the car feel different. The steering wheel itself is more solid.

Hey man, thank you for this detailed overview. Another commenter mentioned that theirs lost coloration over time. How has yours held up so far? I'm about to do this on a gen 1 Tundra Limited.

Yeah mine has a really bad alignment on the airbag cover. The torque bit on the driver side was bent a bit.

I think it’s aluminum so it will break

the lug that holds the airbag Allen bolts in are definitely steel. they're stamped steel. should bend fairly easily and if it fixes the alignment on the airbag, that's an easy fix.

Are there splines when placing the new wheel on? My wheel is always off after a wheel alignment. I removed the upper column cover and I can see someone was in there before (used car I just bought). Starting to think someone removed either the wheel or shaft near the pedals and didn't align correctly when reinstalling.

Yes there are splines. Maybe it’s off a tooth .. but I’d ask the alignment shop if they can fix it first.

Any alignment shop can fix this in a few minutes. It's not worth messing with the steering wheel itself; you just center it by adjusting the tie rod ends. I'm really surprised that an alignment shop would let it leave the garage with a mis-centered steering wheel.

you can also contact the ebay vendors direct. the one I spoke to was in Taiwan, he was willing to make a special listing for me to buy a specific color scheme at a specific price.

I did not. I just got added to the FB group a couple days ago. I'm planning to run the gx through dishpan springs next weekend and I'll see if anyone on there wants to go.
