This is a short video on how to construct a seat cushion. I use a mixture of new and traditional techniques.
The seat cushion was 6" deep mad up from 2 at 1.5 inches and 1 at 3" thick.
I have been in the upholstery and interior decorating business for over 25 years, as well as teaching these subjects both privately and in colleges. I have drawn on my years of teaching to put this video together and hope to have answered all your questions.
Please feel free to ask questions and I shall see if I can put together videos to answer them.
Have fun updating your seat cushions.

Absolutely brilliant! Thank you for explaining the cultural differences of top quality expectations. I work in Marine Canvas industry (USA, and am self taught) and have worked on sailboat interior cushions that were made in Sweden over 20 years ago, and the quality of interior work was impeccable-other local upholstery shops don't even meet that standard today! I did :) You do amazing work!!

Thank you for your comment. I was in for a huge culture shock when I first move from the UK to Houston. In the UK I had sometimes a 6-month waiting list for my work, here I had to change my approach as people want it now and many do not understand the quality so long as it looks the part. I remember one of my first projects in the UK was to remake some rather long, velvet curtains that were 80+ years old into shorter ones. The main fabric was still in good shape, slightly sun-bleached, and worn along the bottom hem. Here in the US, they would have been trashed after a number of years as they were not usable anymore. Always strive to do the best work even though it will not be seen by others.

Another trick you can use to get the pillow back inside is to sandwich the foam between two flat sheets of plastic film with a vaccum hose to vacuum the air to make the foam flattened. The suction and static friction will cause the two sheets of plastic film to stick together while the foam is compressing, and then once you get the foam inside the cover, you can pull the plastic sheets out from each side.
@beinspired1487
@beinspired1487 4 ай бұрын
@@OptimusSatanas Thank you for this tip. I used this method in the past, and depending on the thickness of the plastic can dictate whether you can pull all the plastic out or leave some behind. For exterior cushions, it can sometimes be better to leave the plastic in place as it helps preserve the foam from rotting out too soon.

Great instructional video!!!! Love your accent, too. You sound just like my mother, born in Morpeth, Northumberland. Especially liked video because you stuck to the necessary elements of making the cushion and didn’t put in lots of extraneous dialog to fill air time like others often do. You really know your stuff! When putting the top/bottom of the cushion cover on leave enough space to put the cushion in and hand sew the open side shut. Remember to make the inside cover a good 1"/2cm larger than the outside cover as this allowed the new cushion to fill out the new exterior cover. Thank you for your question and your feedback on the video. I had the opportunity of swapping out feather back seat cushions for foam and wrap, this is the video I put together for it kzfaq.info/get/bejne/quBpaJOCrLS8fGg.html My friend was really pleased with the results. You can pack a loose filling around foam, but I feel this doesn't give a nice finish. The method in the film shows an added layer of dacron on the front and sides, you could add another layer if you wanted a fuller look. I hope this is of use to you, good luck with your project.

Thank you for your feedback. I do use this method for most outdoor/patio furniture, as it gives the best results. The cushions last longer if you bring them into the garage for storage when not being used. In the area I live in, the squirrels tear the cushions apart for the dacron to make their dreys/nests. So glad to find this tutorial. I appreciate the detailed descriptions you provided as you demonstrated the application of the batting. Your work is beautiful! This is my first time in trying to revive a seat cushion. I bought a batting (97% cotton - used by quilters) before seeing this video. While it seems like I can use it...should I ditch that and buy the dacron instead? While I may fail miserably with this project....I have at least learned what to look for / ask for from now on. Many thanks!

Thank you for your comment. I do use quilting cotton for many things, so do not just throw it away as it is often really quite useful for bulking up thin fabrics. I usually use a thick Dacron 2cm/1" thick is perfect for chair seats and seat cushions. I am sure you will have great results now that you have found this video to follow. Keep the Dacron a little tight over the foam and if there is already Dacron on the foam just put the new layer over the top, and you will do fine. I would love to know how you get on. Use a carving /bread knife with a serrated blade to cut it if you do not have an electric carving knife or if you do use one and the blade gets residue stuck to it, or it is awkward to cut through. I have not used memory foam in a long time. As to the rest of the question, yes you can wrap it just like the rest of the video shows. Good luck with your projects.

Thank you for your feedback. The foam in the center could easily go up to 4 1/2" if you want the seat cushion to look plumper otherwise, your plan will give you a nice foam base for your seat cushion. As to the dacron/batting wrap, I tend to use a 1" thick for my seats and seat cushions as it gives more resistance. I seem to think that it is the 45 that I use more often. It is what every my supplier cuts for me so there is never a tag on it. I hope this is of use, good luck with your project.

She must have been delighted else she wouldn't have made the comment. The reference might be a little further down in this feed of comments. I would suggest spritzing the cats with water when they get on the furniture and also the furniture itself with diluted vinegar to help neutralize the smell. The cats don't like the spray and it does them no harm, if they're scratching up the sides of the furniture hit that with some hairspray. Good luck with your projects and the cats.

Thank you for the question. I just feel it is the lazy person's way (in the industry) and it is really annoying if you have to take them out to replace the foam insert underneath. As it is for an outside project you really need to think about the staples rusting and leaching the colour through the fabric. Thank you for your comment. I have used this method, but getting the plastic out afterwards is not that easy. Although for patio furniture it is a good idea as it helps prevent the foam from going funky from the rain and pollen. I do offer to make interior covers out of cotton to go over the foam, this helps the cushions slide in easily. The cotton cover is 2cm/1" larger on all dimensions (as this keeps the cushion together and the exterior cover is still tight over the interior foam) than the outer cover. I hand sew them shut. This is extra and many people do not bother with them. Most people work with a budget. I hope this is of use to you and good luck with your projects.

Is the glue necessary? Would it be ok to leave the foam just stacked without glue?
@beinspired1487
@beinspired1487 3 жыл бұрын
Good question. I would advise you to glue it as it holds the foams together. When I first started out, we didn't glue them together although we did wrap them as I show you in the video. Sometimes the foams would slip against each other as we were folding them into their covers and then they would look a little off along the edges. The glue just helps to stabilize them when being manhandled into place. The 3M spray glue is the best one for the job, although I have used other ones. It doesn't set up straight away, it is the combination of the whole process that keeps everything together. The wrap just helps the foam to slide into place a little better than just the foam. There is often too much friction between some fabrics and the foam. It can be quite a workout. Good luck with your project.

As to the foam you will need to measure you seat cushions, front to back, side to side and then the height. Look up for a local Foam Store that will take orders and cut the foam for you, as they will have access to the various deinsities of foam. I am not quite sure what they call that as it has been many years since I've had to use it and what they call it here in the states is sometimes different from other countries. I would suggest you use a calico/plain cotton to sew onto an original spring base if you can not find something similar. Using materials that you have available to you for most repairs as long as it is a similar weigh are perfect for most projects. The fabric looks more flimsy than is really was, having just worn through in areas giving it a more delicate look. Good luck with your projects.

I have a Brand new sofa bed from NEXT but the foam is rapped in the same material show here, but when I sit on it , it is so uncomfortable. Can you put feather cushions or Wool on the top layer of cushions for plump them up ?

Thank you for your question. I am sorry to say that you might find replacing the seat cushions with better-quality foam as well as Dacron, or just adding an extra layer of the Dacron to the existing ones will do the trick. Unfortunately, the price paid for new furniture doesn't reflect the quality of foam they use for the seating. I make new seat cushions for new furniture more often than I like to admit. Try the extra wrap on one seat cushion and see what you think before doing them all, although you can take the wrap off and reuse it on new foam if required. Good luck with your troubleshooting.

Where are you located in the US? Do you or does your company redo sofa cushions for people out of state? My bench cushion foam on a custom sofa less than a year and a half old completely bottomed out already! Thank you for sharing this video 💜

Thank you for your question. I am located just north of Houston, Texas. I work alone on projects as I no longer work full-time or have a company. I do this to show people how to do the work so they get a nice finished look when their projects are completed. I would suggest either going back to where you purchased the bench and asking them to sort the problem out or ordering a better-quality foam from your local Foam Store, I think they are a franchise or an upholstery business close to you and take your seat cushion into them they can help you.

Thank you for your question. I order the foam I use from my local Foam Store, which I believe is a franchise as I have seen adverts for them in various cities throughout America. I advise people to order from a company that deals with foam rather than picking it up at your local craft shop as it is usually overpriced for the quality you are paying for. I did have a lady say she ordered hers online, so Google for suppliers and see what comes up, or even visit your local upholsterers, they might be able to help as they will be local to you. Good luck with your project.

Please explain why you chose to laminate the foam for a seat cushion rather than simply selecting a single piece of high density foam of the desired dimension. Was it less expensive? More convenient?
@beinspired1487
@beinspired1487 Жыл бұрын
Thank you for your question. The price of the foam is about the same, so no huge savings or expenditures there. I do it this way as the extra firm foam takes a while to break down and soften up. The supersoft gives a little cushioning and the illusion of giving to the new seat cushion. And so far the cushions I have made like this over the past 6 or 7 years have not been complained about or upgraded. I used to make them in medium-density foam and wrap the dacron around them and would find that clients would want new seat cushions a lot earlier. Although I like earning money I do really prefer giving Value for money. Good luck with your projects.

What kind of foam did you use as well as the softer foam? Thank you.
@beinspired1487

Thank you for the question. The thicker piece of foam in the center is high-density/extra firm foam and the thinner one on each side is low-density/super soft foam. I am sure there are numbers that go with them, but those are the labels I have been given in the UK and over here in the US. I hope that helps. Good luck with your project.

What is the purpose of the softer top and bottom? Can you just purchase the firm cushion to fit?
@beinspired1487
@beinspired1487 Жыл бұрын
Thank you for your question. I used to do my cushions in the medium density and found that the foam tended to give after a while so swapped for the firmer foam with the softer on either side if you can flip the cushions, otherwise just on the one side of the seat cushion if it can only be used one way. My ladies and gents seem to prefer the firmness of their new seat cushions. The softer foam, along with the dacron just makes them feel like there is a little give as you sit down. The seat cushions seem to last a little longer too. As the foam is cellular in its makeup the cell walls eventually breakdown and the foam loses its durability and will need to be replaced at some point I hope this answers your question and good luck with your projects.

Could you please let me know where to order foam. What density are you using. For a 4 inch finished thickness, would you suggest 1 inch soft and 3 inch high density
@beinspired1487
@beinspired1487 4 ай бұрын
Thank you for your question. I order my foam from The Foam Store here in Houston, I believe they are part of a franchise so there should be more of them throughout the States. Otherwise, you will have to look up a local company close to you that can offer more variety than a craft store can. As for the depth of the cushions, if it is a double-sided cushion then I would put in a 3 1/2" center of extra firm/high-density foam with a layer of 1" super soft/low-density foam on either side as shown in the video. If the cushion can only be used one way then I would advise you to use 4" extra firm/high-density with a layer of 1" super soft/low-density foam on top, but still wrap the dacron all the way around the seat cushion as shown in the video. Good luck with your project.

@beinspired1487
@beinspired1487 4 ай бұрын
@@charlottegasperlin3992 I prefer to use the 1" thick Dacron as it is more forgiving. If there is a problem with lining up the foam sides or if the original cover has stretched a bit the dacron will fill out and smooth the edges a bit better.

Question: Should we WASH the cushion cover first before we put it on the new cushions?
@beinspired1487
@beinspired1487 3 жыл бұрын
To be honest, I invariably don't wash the covers I put on, mainly because they are given to me by the client and so if I wash them and I damage them then I have a problem on my hands. For newly cut fabric I don't wash them either as it takes the newness out of the fabric and people might not like that either. I will however ask my clients to wash the dropcloths if that is their choice of fabric for a project. Dropcloths do shrink up quite a bit. I do however suggest that when you do wash seat cushions. Wash them and let them spin out, then put them back on the seat/back cushion and let them dry overnight, before putting them on the chair or sofa. Place them on the front border so that the zipper and two sides get dry. The front border can dry once the cushion is back in place. I have been known to wash fabric very occasionally and on one of my remake videos on here I did actually need to do just that. Use your own judgment, although if you are using old covers and they belong to you then wash them.

@@beinspired1487 I agree.... I'm using "Drop Cloth" for my material... I have to share with you something I did and it came out Fantastic... On the Big RV I'm refurbishing... I wanted to match the Curtains with the Fabric... but couldn't find the right shade of Turquoise that I had custom made for the exterior of the RV (YES, I had painted the exterior of the Vintage Travel Trailer, a true 1950s Turquoise...) Sooooo I thought, well, I'm using a Latex House Paint... I will dilute it, 20/80 (20% latex paint to 80% water).... and put the Cotton Cloth which was Tea Towels in the solution... left it in for about 15 min. then rinsed it really good with clear water... hung it out to dry on the fence, (do I sound country or what?) This was a sample piece. After it dried really good... I washed it in the machine, put a lot of softner. in.. and it turned out BEAUTIFUL... Perfect color match, and it was soft to the touch! This is really good with the Drop Cloth after I Bleach them first to make them white, then dye them with the house paint.... Tea Towels (double cotton gauze), they're cheap, and make beautiful little curtains.

@@judichristopher4604 That is a really good idea for the dyeing of the fabric. I have seen people paint their fabric and it tends to go rock hard and is most upleasant. I wouldn't have thought to use the latex paint over here, although the water to paint ratio and the fabric softeners would certainly make a big difference to the finished fabric. Light tea towels and table cloths make lovely curtains and are a good way to repurpose fabrics. Your projects sound fun

@@judichristopher4604 I am going to suggest that to one of my clients who is trying to match up some fabric that she has ordered to some drop cloths she is going to dye. She could use a tester pot size of paint as they could match the colour at the DIY store. I think, you having written about it on here, might inspire other people to have a go at making their own fabrics.

what is dacron for? do we need to use it in upholstery for chairs?
@beinspired1487
@beinspired1487 2 ай бұрын
Thank you for your question. Dacron is used as a filler and smooths out most imperfections there might be on a chair, seat/back cushion, or chair seat. It puffs out the cover a little making the chair look more inviting and comfortable. Sometimes I am only replacing the seat cushion and because the older cover might have stretched I can shred some Dacron or use Polifil to fill out any corners. You will find putting the cover on a lot easier with a Dacron wrap as some fabrics have fire retardancy sprayed on them creating more friction with uncovered foam, it also holds the foam together when manipulating it into the cover. I use it on the arms and back of chairs when I am re-upholstering them too. I hope this answers your question, good luck with your project

Did you cut the foam or have it cut to order?
@beinspired1487

Thank you for your question. I usually get The Foam Store to cut the foam to order, they are kind enough to accept templates for shaped projects. If I am cutting foam I will use an electric carving knife, although a serrated bread knife will work just as well. Just keep the knife blade at right angles to the line you are following. Good luck with your project

Thank you for the question. I get mine from The foam store, which I think is a franchise here in the US. I am sure there must be something similar elsewhere. They just deal with foam and will cut it to size or shape (if you send a template) for you. I suggest doing s search and see what is close to you. Personally, I do not recommend buying from a craft store as the foam is often overpriced and they do not have the same variety available. Good luck with your search and project.
