This is a video showing how I replaced some old faulty lead flashing. I show how to make soakers for large concrete roof tiles which is an attractive way to lead a chimney or abutment wall that has such tiles on it.
Use minimally code 4 lead for such a job.
I put the business info and phone number below mainly for people who want to get in touch for me to price a project they have to be done.
Note: Due to receiving many calls from all over the country from people wanting advice only I will only take such calls from now on if the person has bought a "super thanks" which can be found below the video on the right side. (It says "thanks" with a love heart and dollar symbol in it) Click and pay what you feel a chat/advice may be worth to you, I will chat and advise accordingly. Thanks for your understanding!

Hi Dave great video and very informative, on the front apron did you weld any of the corners, cheers in advance 👍
@davesalter
@davesalter Ай бұрын
No welding on this one no. Soakers bossed around the corners to make water tight.

@@nottslad1211 it’s called the back gutter not apron on the back of a chimney. It can be bossed around the corner and that’s how it was done since Roman times before welding existed. Needs to be code 5 lead at the back and bossed properly without thinning the lead, not just beaten around the corner which thins it out.

Nice job but I would of used a separate flashing on the front apron and cover flashing

Hi Dave, Nice work. I know with step flashing cement looks good but can lead mate silicon be used in this situation? Which one will last longer lead sealant or cement with possible cracks due to thermal movements? Which roofing system is good cement base ridge system or dry ridge system using mechanical system. Many thanks

Hello and thanks for watching. I use both cement and from time to time the lead sealant. As to which lasts longer, there is no definite answer to that as it largely depends on who is doing it and how it is done. Decent mortar pointing can last for many decades or even longer. Its largely down to the mix ratios, the weather it was pointed in, too hot? or too cold? etc etc. lead silicone i think says on the tubes 25 years life expectancy, but i dont think its even been around that long so time will tell. But again how it is used and done is relevant as if its done poorly and doesn't fully seal the joints it may leak. But i imagine either done correctly should last a couple decades at least and still be water tight.

Hi Dave. Can you explain why you use soakers instead of a simple cover flashing on profiled tiles? Also would you use these on flat single lap tiles? I see soakers now used often on both profiled and flat interlocking tiles, I was always taught this was wrong as they are not properly supported, and that soakers are for use on double lap tiles and slate only. Many thanks.

I prefer the look of soakers on pan tiles in all honesty. Although you do use more lead so factor that in. Traditional soakers on plain tiles and slates are hidden and are supported by the slate/tile it rests on. You can’t do hidden soakers on pan tiles are they are not supported so that’s right, but if placed on top and visible they are obviously supported. Yes you can do this on flat profile tiles and is better than a cover flashing on a long run as water can get past the flashing with cover flashing on flat tiles. I did soakers on flat tiles in a video I did “Fixing shocking lead flashing”, check it out. Thanks for watching! 👍 Don’t forget to sub! 😀

It was the only part in decent condition, not split and was code 5, so thicker lead , still a lot of life left in it. Customer didn’t want it changed so to save a little we left it in. Thanks for watching! 👍
