Replacing Driveshaft U-Joints - Mountaineer - Viscous Coupling Repair Pt 4 - Vortex Garage Ep. 15

In this video, we complete the repair of our transfer case in the Mountaineer by installing new u-joints in both the front and rear driveshafts, and then reinstalling the driveshafts. We finally give a quick test to show that our viscous coupling repair (along with 4 new tires) solved our binding issue. Stay tuned though, there were many other jobs done when the binding test was recorded - and we will be posting many more videos on our Mountaineer project!

tyvm the videos you have posted have been vary helpful. i have talked to other ppl and have been told to change drive shafts, ball joints, axles, wheel hubs, breaks, but no one has ever said anything about that so tyvm

What brand u joint's did u use ?

My Ford's yolk comes out with shaft,93 explorer.fine. my mar k s got removed during joint r&r . On the splined i.d. of shaft yolk there is a channel Ed flat key looking groove. Inside the yolk I see no matching groove to mate, I know the importance of exact position. But fked it up anyway,marks come off. Hopefully u can tell me in the near near future if n how that spline channel can save me. Engine.rear wheels have not turned at all .so same as when I chocked it.

How many miles were on that case? I have one to do in the next few days and not certain if I should get other parts since it has 197K miles. I ordered the coupler and the chain(aftermarket - OEM is $150 vs $100) and that was $650 so people should be prepared for a good expense even doing it yourself.

Should you be able to hold front output shaft and be able to spin the rear

mine did not. The viscous coupling should hold it. note that if yours is not a BW4410 but a shiftable tc then your condition would be ok in 2wd only

The music is too loud to even hear the binding or scraping. Just an FYI.. Helpful video none the less.

I may add this one to my list to try and remaster with no music. Have done about 8 so far from back in the day when we were learning editing and used music waaaay too much
