Replacing First Alert 10 Year Smoke Alarm - only after 1.5 years ...

So I am replacing my First Alert 10 Year Smoke Alarm only after 1.5 years ... There are other brands of smoke detectors online: ( amzn.to/2Yy71uH ) . I got my First Alert 10 year smoke alarm in a 2 pack from Costco for about $30. I returned it only after 1.5 years as it started beeping 3 - end of life at 3 AM in the morning. I got my ladder and took it down to disable it.
So after returning it, I saw it was onsale for $22 so I just bought it again. Hopefully they updated the battery design so it will last the 10 years.

Same problem here- one alarm lasted only 1.5 years (while the other is fine.) Called First Alert and after they had me test it and such to prove that it is indeed defective, they ultimately sent us a replacement in the mail at no charge.

Had similar alarm going off - low number of months - model produced Nov 2016, installed 2017 alarming 2019. I ended up deactivating unit as even outside in clear area was locked in 'alarm mode'. I called the 800 number and since I had deactivated the unit, they are sending a replacement. Interesting - the response did mention a couple of items a) Information - 'Spiders are active at night' - their experience is that a small spider may 'take up residence' in the unit causing the alarming, and or b) Question - 'How often did we clean (using a hot air drier on low or compressed air cannister) our units?' Common House dust often settles in and causes issue. Recommendation was to clean them monthly. Since we change out our air filters monthly, I guess we will add this activity to the smoke detectors for a while to see if we do in fact get to the 10 year mark on sister units installed at the same time which have not yet alarmed out. The only comment I have to offer here is that I have one unit in my garage wood working area which to date has never been 'cleaned'. If it alarms, I will try some compressed air on it prior to deactivating ---

Ours also last 1.5 y. From 2018/2 to 2019/7! Need to take it back to Costco and replace it! It means nothing by this 10 years battery deal.

I have a 3 pack from Costco too. The same model P1210. Installed them on 10/2019 but the first one started to chirping 1 year ago and the third one started chirping yesterday. Frustrated. Not even 2 years and all of them are bad. Called the 800 number and they said it is not common like this, and will replace them for me, with the original warranty date. Let's see if lasts, yes, doubted.

I have this one. It is about a year old or so. It started beeping cause of low battery life.

I hope people are not choosing the thumbs down because of the product because your video was really good! They may have chosen the thumbs down because of their frustration with the actual product (life is not even close to 10 years!) but your video was excellent.

I have 3 x10 year First Alert smoke detectors. They lasted over ten years before one started to reach the end. The other two were still fine but we replaced them because it had been over ten years. I bought First Alert replacements because the others lasted so long.

I have the P1210 first alert company knows there's a problem with these models and also where I bought them also. First Alert told me everytime I have a problem with one of them or and all them to call them and they will sent me new one, free one, everytime one goes out at no charge, free shipping they pay the shipping. They said they will send me the combo PRC 710, they said they have no come backs on this model.

If the switch is all the way up, you killed the alarm and it cant be reactivated

First Alert p1210 lasated 2.5 years then gives false alarms, very frustrating. Other alarms different models don't go off in same room.

I purchased these for my house about one year ago to the day they are not cheap and I have probably 10 of these in my home so this week two different alarms went off beeping at 2 AM and I had to deactivate the alarms they are signaling that they are at the end of their life waking me up in the middle of the night making me think I have a fire I’m ready to have a freaking heart attack and these things weren’t cheap what a shame

Same happen to me. They claim that if you put them where existing hardwired units were they will have interference. I don't believe all these failures are due to interference. I had issues with the wired models going off every yr in the middle of the night. This model is no better and is an excuse for the crap they make now days. I'm just waiting for the other 4 to die any minute now. This whole 10yr life and deactivating crap is a money making scheme.

@@ingvarz7468 ALL 6 started chirping one at a time. After hitting the button, it would sound the alarm every few minutes. The only way to stop it was to completely remove them as there is no battery to change rendering them useless. At the moment, I have no smoke detectors in the house as I have no idea which ones are reliable to not wake me in the middle of the night. I would think twice before I purchased any First Alert product as I just got burned on 6 units that were not cheap and were supposed to last 10 years.

I have 6 of same model, purchases 2017-2030. 4 have failed, 2 battery chirping and 2 multile, false alarms, even after repeated cleanings. Costco replaced 2, First Alert the other 2, with some argument. Previous 9v battery models models never did the false alarm, never. On the last replacement I demanded they send another 10yr model and they sent a commercial unit, 5 times thicker, same specs. I think they know there is a design defect that causes false alarms and the battery end of life false or real failure. I think this is very serious as a main home protection unit. Today a 5th one went off, 3 different times in 20 minutes. 1st short 1-2 min, , next about 5-6 minutes (I was in shower) and 3rd time, as I was rushing to get out and to check, for just 2-3 min. To me, this can't be "dust or spider", but product design failure and defect? I think I'll return to Costco, as they charge the vendor for all returns and handling. It appears most work correctly , so no one is looking seriously into this.

Are you fucking serious? Just because something is made in a foreign country doesn’t mean that it’s a bad product! iPhones are made in China! They are good products. First alert smoke alarms, from my very limited experience with them, are also good products.

Don't buy the same model. They are horrible. I had same model and same problem. I replaced with xsense and no more problems.

Never get a sealed battery for a smoke detector…batteries cannot be replaced and the entire unit has to be discarded. Ridiculous.
