Brakes were making a grinding noise, and the pads were shot which damaged a rotor. Here's how to fix them. This is the same style of brakes on a number of Ford vehicles.

Thanks. I used you instructions for my '92 Econoline. I had never seen those pins before. While the removal looked obvious, it was reassuring to see you do it first. Plus I got to drink a beer while watching. The only thing I did additionally was take my grinder with a wire wheel and clean the journals where the pins and calipers slide and add a thin film of grease. My inner pads were dragging. Thanks again, great video!

I just use a 3/8 extension for my ratchet wrench and pop it through with a rubber mallet. You don't even need the screwdriver. It works just like that tool you made for the compression pins. It was a happy accident that i figured out i could do that because I didn't have any round bar stock to use at the time.

Really nice video. I did the brakes on my '92 F150 a little over a year ago and I am about to do it again. I really don't like those pins. I replaced my wheel bearings at the same time. My Dad bought this truck when it was new. When it was time for him to replace the brake pads he noticed that the bearings were marked "made in Japan". He refused to put those bearings back into his truck. Instead he went to the parts store and got some Timken bearings marked "made in USA". Those were still in there when I did the brakes a year ago. I didn't care where the bearings came from as long as they were something I recognized. I was able to find Timken bearings made in USA online.

@My name is Steve Rogers My brakes weren't all that bad, I was doing brakes on another car and just decided I would do the F150 again while I still had good weather. I am not particularly hard on brakes. I learned from my Dad to come to a slow rolling stop. That accomplishes a couple of things. Makes brake pads last longer and ensures that if something goes wrong and you hit the car ahead of you it won't cause serious damage or injury. I see so many people rushing right up to the stop light way too fast. Anyway front pads are an easy job and cheap if you don't have to replace rotors. Thanks for the comment. My Dad got more out of his brakes than anyone I know but even he would not get 163K, that is unusual under any circumstances. Congrats.

Good Video The only things I would say that your missing is brake lubricant many auto parts places sale slide pin grease that helps in the brake to slide on the pins. And where is your brake cleaner to clean the factory coating on the new rotor as well as their are factory torque specs to follow for the spline nut on the rotor as well.

Good video... Two additional things though! You should clean your pistons before pushing them back into the caliper to avoid dirt and dust damaging the seal; and, when installing the new bearings, you should torgue them down to 21 foot pounds to seat them, rotate around a few times, then back off the nut and tighten to about finger tight. Think the manual calls for 1.5 "inch" pounds. 1st ford pads I have replaced in decades, and wasn't familiar with the caliper pin system. Thanks for filming.

Great video! Thanks for taking the time to film it. With the spindle nut, I found specific instructions on torquing the spindle nut in this manual (www.skf.com/binary/79-66360/457377.pdf) because I was a little nervous about "rotate that nut just slightly" and I thought I had come across a torque spec before when changing the rotors on my Ranger, which is pretty much the exact same process. "Tighten hub nut to 22-25 ft-lbs/25-29 Nm while rotating hub in opposite direction. Back off 1/8 turn and install locknut and cotter pin." Hopefully that'll help others who may have the same concern.

I have seen similar instructions years ago and even followed them once. I bookmarked your comment because I think it is very good information. I am replacing rotors and pads on my 1992 ford F150. I just replaced the rotors today and will do the pads tomorrow. My Dad showed me how to set the tension on the spindle nut many years ago. This F150 is one that he bought brand new and now I have it. Over 20 years ago, when he was about 75 he was doing front brakes on this truck. When he removed the bearings to grease them he noticed that they were stamped "made in Japan". There was nothing wrong with the bearings but he refused to put those Japanese bearings back in his truck. So, he went to the parts store and bought brand new Timken, made in the USA, bearings. I noticed when I pulled the bearings out of the rotors they did indeed say, Timlin, made in the USA. This truck is a 1992 and those bearings have been in it for a lot of years and I re-installed them. So, I guess his method is ok. He was a very good mechanic but he never used a torque wrench as far as I know. I use a torque wrench on everything that I can reach. I might check the bearing nut with a torque wrench tomorrow. Good to know.

Nice video but I would have cleaned metal area adjacent to steel/rubber guides to remove rust and apply lube there. On a two wheel drive, I’ve always tightened the spindle nut fairly tight, then loosen slightly and snug it up just a little while spinning rotor/drum. On my 1990 F150 4x4 it state to torque nut to 90 ft lbs, loosen 1/4 turn then tighten to 20 ft lbs. Is there an anti rattle clip at the lower position on the inner pad? I didn’t see one on your pad, I guess Ford changed the design. But my biggest concern is why didn’t you inspect and grease the left side bearings since the right side seemed to be adjusted wrong which caused you to replace them.

Okay, so the inner bearing (Timken TMK-SET 13) for my 1995 F150 (2WD) came in two parts: the bearing, and a sleeve. I'm assuming the sleeve is the seal, though it does not have any rubber parts, just metal. Looks like that is what you tapped in with the brass hammer. And, the outer bearing, Timken TMK-SET12, comes in two parts: the bearing, and a sleeve. But I do not see you using the sleeve when you install the outer bearing. On the old rotor (which I'm discarding for new Power-Stop Z-36 rotors) the inner bearing is still inside, surrounded by a piece of rubber. Is that the seal, or is the the "sleeve" that came with the bearing the seal? Sorry, but I'm a ball bearing virgin. But then, that's why you make these videos, yes?
@JoDaddysGarage
@JoDaddysGarage 3 жыл бұрын
The pieces you note are the bearing, (tapered) and the "race". The race is the contact surface for the bearing. Ideally, you will remove the old "race" with a punch, striking it from the back side. In my case, the rotor comes with the a race already installed. You can just grease the bearing(s) and install. The seal gets tapped in place for the inner bearing. Good questions.

Okay, you packed the new bearings with grease but how much extra grease did you put in the center hub of the rotor? I know that you can overfill it which is bad but seems like some grease should be put in there. Maybe one-quarter to one-half full?
@JoDaddysGarage

I usually don't add much, but some people pack the cavity full. The thing is, grease doesn't sling around like oil. it will stay in the bearing. I would maybe do one quarter.

Hmm. That's odd. Were you able to get it back together?

I sure did! I worked the rotor back off and saw spots of black build up slightly raised to the touch on the spindle where the bearing would sit. Some light sanding and hard scrubbing with brake cleaner and it slid on pretty smooth

Would this be the same setup for a 1990 ford f250 2wh drive..?

What's the torque spec for the axel nut?
@JoDaddysGarage
@JoDaddysGarage 6 жыл бұрын
I don't know. It's more of a "feel" thing. There may be an actual spec, but I don't have it.

That's ok but for a beginner (me) replacing the bearings, I could tighten the axel nut just like how you did it in your video?
@JoDaddysGarage

Yes. There may be a spec available, but with years of experience, I can say "feel" works. Ideally you're not tightening like a bolt, you're creating tension on the bearings.

Your heading on this thing the name of the video you have 1992 F150. But you said in the video it's a 1995 F150 I had a 1995 F150 it did not have those pins. My 1992 F150 and my 93 had has the pins. I never seen a 1995 that had the pins I heard they do have them but I've never seen him yet

In the video he clarifies that it is indeed a 92 that he is working on. He mistakenly thought it was a 95 when he started.

Nice Repair, Thank You for posting. One question: why no grease on the spindle itself? as I recall we used to coat the spindle with a film of grease before we slipped the rotors on after packing inner and outer bearings. Not sure it did any good other than maybe coke due to the heat.

As I look at it, there is little to no value to add grease to the spindle. It doesn't move, and the grease doesn't transfer around like oil.

it'll flow like water if it gets hot enough. i once packed some hubs full of grease(copped from uncle sam) on a small trailer, overloaded it to the point were i was breaking springs and popping tires as i pulled it cross country. the hubs hardly ever got luke warm when they should have been too hot to touch. in theory the cylinder walls of the hub will pull the grease around the spindle and mix with the heated grease from the bearings due to that stuff becoming runny and the fact that heat chases cold. so the heat acts as a pump to move grease in and out of the bearings and the the hubs stayed cooler due to lack of enough friction to heat up all that grease. i figure grease aint that expensive and as long as it dont ooze out and contaminate the rotor surface it shouldnt hurt anything so... why not?
