Hey I just did it successfully using a screwdriver and electric tape. There is an easy tutorial on R*ddit, but essentially it isnt harder than opening the cartridge, gently prying the glue off between the two pins and the battery, and placing the new one in its place. Using electical tape you hold both pins in place and youre done. Works like a charm and you dont need to use any tool that can damage your game. Just dont brute force the battery off the pins like a maniac and you cant possibly fail.

It’s a super easy solder job, just watch a couple of tutorials and with the rights techniques you’ll successfully replace your battery (it was my first solder job so i speak because i did it)

When I removed the battery, it seemed to have a little "extra" metal piece that went down into the board, which the new CR1616 batteries don't have. I haven't seen a single person replacing batteries in GBA cartridges that has mentioned this, so I don't know if it's not supposed to be there or if it wasn't supposed to come out.

I think I know what you’re referring to. It’s just something that some of the original batteries have for more support I guess? It’s attached to the battery so it should come out when the battery is removed

I'm waiting for my batteries to be delivered! A local phone repair shop quoted me 20 euros per game to replace the batteries. So I decided to do it myself 😅 and I'm glad I did! I already have a soldering iron and the batteries themselves cost me 20 bucks in total (5 of them including shipping in my country) watching your video, I'm 100% sure I can do this myself. Thanks for sharing!

Sure thing! Be sure not to tighten it too tight when putting it back together. These shells crack easily

Makes sense thou. Games are 20 years old, havent been sold for 15 years + and now everyone and their grandma wants to own them. So glad i bought Emerald CIB before the pandemic cause holy damn you need to win the lottery to justify buying it now.

Hello friend, can you help me? In mine, when removing the solder and old battery, this solder came out of the positive part and the tin and new solder no longer stick to it, do you know how I can solve it? Thanks!

Sounds like the solder pad is damaged. You’ll probably have to find where the trace goes and scratch off enough to expose some copper to solder the battery from. If that’s not something you’re comfortable with you might be better off going to an electronics repair shop

I swapped a dead battery, not the first time I've done so on a cartridge, and the battery isn't working. Tried several batteries, took out a multimeter and confirmed the batteries worked. Cleaned the board with 99% IPA, I don't see any issues on the board. Anything I'm missing or anything else I can try?

See if you accidentally knocked a small component off the board. I’ve done that before while replacing batteries

What the heck makes a battery go dry anyway? I bought a copy with a "new battery" a few years ago. I barely played it, caught like 2 pokemon and no badge. But checked yesterday and it says the battery has run dry. I don't get it, if I barely touched the game what gives?

It shouldn’t. GBA games use a different kind of memory from GB carts and doesn’t require battery power to keep the save. It’s the whole reason you can play with a dead battery.

Soooooo i took the tab off on the negative side of the batteries placement. And a whole piece of the circuit board came along.. so now the metal beneath is exposed. And the tabs on my current battery don't reach. How fucked am i? 😅

Double check that the battery terminals are facing the right way. You could also use a multimeter to make sure the battery has a charge. Also look to see if the component just above the positive battery tab got knocked off.

Tried this with my Pokemon Emerald and fully ripped off my positive pad...I had issues getting the game to read again because I bridge soldered a chip a teeny tiny bit, but with sheer luck I got it out with some solder wick and almost unsoldered a leg. Fortunately I managed to fix it. Childhood copy saved. Yeeaah i'm never doing this again, looks like i'll just never have a working battery.

The parts are hard to find so best of luck, I suggest buying a GBA cartridge of any fodder game Tetris and use the parts from there

The most tricky part is screwing the shell back together without cracking the shell from too much pressure 😳

ik its late but also make sure youre doing it right, after taking the screw off dont just try to pry the two pieces apart, you have to slide them apart first and then it comes off ezpz
