I finally get around to replace the clutch and Slave Cylinder on the Freelander.
During the process a lot of footage was lost as it seems a Sony camera
overheats and decides to shut down after about 15 minutes. I decided to replace the flywheel and took a £40 risk getting a used one, it came with surface rust on it but was in a lot better condition than the one that came off (after a quick clean up)
This repair would of been a lot easier on a ramp, however as I did it
on my back I did it in the following order....
Remove strut towers with the bottom arms and driveshafts.
Remove the front subframe
Remove the transfer box
Remove gearbox
Remove clutch and flywheel
I then decided to remove the lower arms from the strut tower to make it
easier putting back in.
Hopefully this would give you an idea of how hard this was to do during Corona virus lock-down, as we were in lock-down I couldn't get anyone to assist me putting the box back in, so someone with a engine lift came in, lined the box up and put two bolts in so I could carry on. I stayed out the way while he was doing this and all precautions were made to make sure
we were safe.

Top respect for doing this job. This is something I doubt I would attempt. I know my limitations with lack of correct tools and knowledge so great job for sure. Thanks for the vid. :) I am going to attempt the timing belt and water pump but just don't understand why you need to take off and lock the starter motor when the crankshaft/pistons have been locked in the correct position and battery disconnected. I am no mechanic but don't like paying the garage costs! Your vids are very useful, thanks.

Thanks for watching and the comments, if you are unsure about doing the timing belt then i wouldnt do it, if it goes wrong then thats the end to the engine. I think the flywheel is locked so then the cam position is locked to the same position as the crank pulley? (I think) so once both are locked into position they cant move, the crank cant move slightly and the timing be out, however marking the crank position once the pulley is removed could be an option, but dont take my word for it, i chose to use the tool as thats what the guide tells me to do so played it safe. Again, thank you for watching, really appreciate it.

@@VarleyRebuilds Thanks, it makes sense what you say. If there is a tool for locking the starter position it is obviously there for a good reason. I just could not imagine why it was needed when cam and flywheel are locked. I bought the car as a project car and is my 4th Land Rover (3 range rovers!) if I mess it up I may have some spares for ya haha. I will follow the correct procedure and mark the belt and make sure teeth all lines up best I can. He who dares wins hopefully!

Thanks for this. My clutch failed this afternoon 😬. I was contemplating changing the gearbox anyway, as it’s whining in 5th & 6th gear I guess I’ll have to expedite it now. I think this is a job for someone with a lift though.

Yes, lift defo needed, or atleast an engine crane to lift the box. Once the box is in, the rest isnt too bad.

Terrific job. I hope you get a good price for it whether it be by raffle or other means. I already have one and can recommend them, especially for distance in bad weather.

They are brill, I really want to keep it for when the winter comes and hopefully get some challenging conditions to drive it in.

Mine went at 90k, luckily was parked up but clutch to the floor, you can actually bump start it into 1st or 2nd gear, I drove it the garage at high revs.

Great vid. I am just doing one on the drive now well a ranger rover evoque but looks like same engine and box. What did you torque dmf and clutch at ? 🙂

Its a pain to do it on the drive, I remember torquing the flywheel up was difficult, i think it was about 115nm, but im not 100% as it was a while ago now, google may help better on that one, dont want to tell you wrong.

Can I change the slave cylinder tube with out removing gearbox ?

For replacing just the cylinders and not the clutch, job simpler ? Do I still have to remove anything under the car? Do you have a more detailed and slow motion video about doing this on the td4 freelander ?

im assuming you mean slave cylinder? the gearbox still has to come out to replace the slave, my clutch was actually in good condition, but while the box is out it may aswel get replaced, I lost a lot of footage as I have a sony camera and they overheat and switch off, I wasnt going to upload a video but I had enough to document me doing the clutch should I come to sell it.

@@VarleyRebuilds ty for the reply. Yes, I meant the slave cylinder. I lost the clutch pedal, goes all the way down with no resistance, even though the fluid is full and no visible leak anywhere. A service told me I must change the slave cylinder, prices for doing this in a shop are pretty high, so I would really like to find a detailed video for complete newbies like me and maybe I could manage to do this during a full weekend :) (Friday + Saturday + Sunday)
