I was replacing the motor on my Pro-Ject Debut III turntable and no one had put a "how to" video on you tube, so i thought i'd film my progress and stick it up.

Thank you - just replaced motor on my 1 Xpression II turntable which had started intermittently buzzing - a light oil touched onto the spindle helped for a while but it kept returning. Now it works like a dream and I can enjoy my vinyl again!

Was your Xpression buzzing like this? Mine is a “Pro-Ject 1 Xpression” from 2005. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hMiYiJSeqJzHhIU.html

I've got an original Debut (came out around 1999?!), just recently developed an intention loud buzzing noise. Will try to repair or replace the motor using this vid as a guide. 👍

I bought mine in about 2002, and it's a mK3. This video is ancient - but it's still going strong. The circuits are very simple - so anything electrical should be fixable.

Thanks very much for uploading this - it's given me the confidence to try it myself. I have the same model of turntable, and my motor runs... but sometimes it runs backwards(!) and sometimes it makes an awful noise. It's a bit surprising because although the thing is almost twenty years old it's actually barely been used. I only bought it initially to digitise my very small vinyl collection, and it was in storage for ages. I brought it out again recently because I missed the experience of playing records. The belt is fine, but that motor issue worries me. A record spinning backwards is not good news for a stylus...

@@KeepItCreativeVideos Happy to say the soldering went well and the motor works - but I'm now having an absolute nightmare with the belt slipping off the pulley. No matter what height I set it at, it slips off. If I put my finger on the outer lug of the motor mount and keep it pressed down a bit so that it remains horizontal, then the belt stays on - so this is simply a case of the belt pulling the motor over at an angle. I can't think of anything I might have done to result in this issue, and I'm wondering whether I'll need to make some sort of bracket to hold that side of the mount down. Did you have any trouble with this at all?

Thanks Neal - I just replaced the motor in my Debut III following your instructions. MartyMartin87 - why NOT replace the motor in an otherwise perfectly good turntable? Turntables are expensive and we're not all made of money. This turntable is practically indestructable, the thing that "goes" is the motor. FYI - "good old turntables" typically DON'T run for decades without some maintenance, particularly on the motor. But while motors from the 70's can generally be easily serviced, modern motors cannot - they are designed to be replaced, not serviced.

Yes - I did - the whole thing went without a hitch. If you've soldered before, then give it a go - otherwise shop around for other repair centres. 130 euros is a bit steep.

Hi, thanks for making this video. What was your diagnosis for the repair, did the motor stop working outright, or did you receive feedback from the transmission of the motor failing? This is the only video I've seen of motor repairs on the project. Only inquiring as my father has this model and he suspected it may be a wiring defect in the stylus arm, I suspect it may be feedback from the motor on its way out. Your thoughts?

the was a long time ago. so I think.... Basically the motor stopped working completely. i.e. the record player stopped responding to the turntable going on. I checked everything else and concluded that it was worth the £20 or whatever to gamble on it being the motor.

this is a great video, thank you. I am not completely certain my motor is toasted, I had to move it myself on a two-day trip and secured the motor with foam inserts because the shipping screws are missing. Now the motor gives the pulley a little jiggle but nothing else. It was also *sub zero* temperatures when I moved and I am wondering if I just need to lubricate some parts of the motor assembly. Any suggestions before I get a new one (which will probably be from Henley because the jerks where I bought the TT where so horribly unhelpful when I called them up for advice about the missing screws..)

I have the identical situation. I moved about three hours drive to a new place and now when I turn it on the pulley just moves about half a millimeter and stops. I had it protected so well too! I replaced the power supply, now I'm thinking maybe it is the motor?

@@timgoffard Sorry, I only noticed this response now. It turns out that, 9 years ago, I had just been using the wrong power supply with my Speedbox! However, I have had to replace the motor within the last year and this video made it much easier.

What was wrong with your motor in the first place, I recently got a project debut III and the motor is constantly humming, slowing down randomly and playing in the reverse direction without any input from myself. Do you think I need to replace it?

I can't remember, place it on something that's taller than the tone arm would be my guess.

You needed to replace rubber suspension O-ring as well coz your is stretched pretty much. ih you ever saw new O-ring you would noticed that ring is waaay smaller than yours. its a pain in the arse to replace that O-ring coz wires are freaking short and you need to be octopus to menage that work by yourself. I know that. was doin this two times in 9 years on my RPM 5 and they have same suspension and motor. Cheers

Hi Neal - I've just installed a new motor on my Debut III and the wiring is exactly the same as it was before (I took a photo) and also the same as on your video - but when I switch it on, the motor twitches but doesn't spin. Any idea why that might be?

Paul, thanks a lot. When you say your power supply is incorrect, I suddenly remember that the power supply which I used is my TEAC TN-300 ps... When I change it back to my orginal one, it spin perfectly~ :D Paul, really thanks for your answer!

Hey mate, thanks for the video and this is a long shot, but what do you think of this? I bought a Debut III Esprit second hand and the pulley seems like it is touching the base plate and making a horrific noise. The pulley has vertical play and when lifted slightly, it breaks contact sounds fine. Does the small screw under the pulley "grip" the motor spline? The pulley should obviously sit up more. Do you think it is more the pulley or the motor? Can you take the pulley wheel off with the motor still attached? kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rdJihqVomdCvoJ8.html

Why the hell do you think there is a need to replace the motor? If there really is a need this turntable is crappy. I mean good old turntables run for decades, they still run and there is no need to replace the motor.

Quite right. I've repaired one of these AC motors. There is a faulty design with these AC motors, e.g. the cheap piece of plastic at each end of the magnet rotor, to keep the magnets in place, disintegrates. Possibly due to bearing oil attacking the plastic. Pro-ject should replace these poor crapped out inferior motors free of charge with a new (improved) one.
