Spent the last few days washing the shoji screens to remove the old paper, measuring and cutting Mr Okuno's handmade paper to fit the screens, pasting them on... It's been quite repetitive and I'm only half done! You'll also get to see Mr Ushiro's son at work. At 22, he's probably one of the youngest tatami craftsmen in Japan.

About Ryunohara: Ryunohara is a tea and bee farm in progress. We're nestled deep in the mountains of Ryujinmura, Wakayama Prefecture. The 2 farmhouses on the property are 60 and 120 years old. We will use natural farming techniques, so no tilling, no fertilisers, pesticides, and no weeding. A farm-to-table cafe is in the works.

I think that rolling the paper into twine at night would be quite relaxing.

I’m glad you enjoy watching shoji getting repapered. If you come volunteer you’ll be in charge of shoji maintenance. 😁

My, that’s a lot of shoji! But the texture of the new paper looks great. Incidentally, I volunteer the two of us for twine making and whatever other natural tea packaging (some fancily folded paper bags for the teas, for instance. You’d need to talk with Wim about that, he’s the more artistic and handy of us). I’m thinking you could make it into the workshop part of the visitor experience. 😉 Incidentally, the EU is to add Japan next week to the very short list of trusted non-European countries for non-essential travelling. Depending on what Japan decides too, leisure travel may resume sooner than expected. 😊

Great video and thanks for making it. This year I did five of my 14 screens. But I used the two sided shoji tape instead of glue/ nori this year. I think that was a mistake. The paper is already separating from frame because the tape doesn't adhere that well. I think taking the tape off next time will be a real pain too. So, I will go back to the original style and use glue. Your paper looks really really nice. WOW!!

Glue works well and is pretty cheap. 14 screens is quite a lot, ganbatte!

Nice ambience and the dog is so cute. Do Shoji screens have paper on just one side or both sides?

Have you been to Singapore? You sound like a Singaporean! I use Shoji paper to cover model airplanes. How do I find the lightest paper grade? There used to be this paper called Esaki paper but it's no longer available. Where would I find the lightest grade of mulberry paper that remains strong while wet?

Is your lovely dog still young and keen to run away, so that you have to keep him tied up? Or are there other animals around he likes to chase after?! Looks like you will soon need to make him a bigger table to hide under!

Mori used to be a wild dog so she has run away 6 times and the last time she ran away she stayed away for 5 days. Also she likes to eat cat poop so she has to be tied up. She gets two long walks a day though!

Hi! What breed is your dog?

Hello Ellis! Mori is a kind of spitz, and she was born in Okayama Prefecture. All the wild dogs there look the same but they have not been assigned a breed name.

Haha the tatami makers here are okay with a 1mm gap but if you go to the Kyoto Imperial Palace the tolerance is 0mm.
