My name is Dave and I travel with my dog Bella in a 1987 Coachmen Classic Class A Motorhome. This is our tour across America. So join us if you’re open to travel, fun, excitement, hiking & exploring. Wish us luck on this adventure! Maybe we’ll see you down the road sometime. Happy trails!
My channel is about full time RV Living in an older RV while keeping the wheels rolling on a budget. I do the repairs, updates and upgrades myself. I’ve become my own RV Mechanic/Medic! I seek boondocking opportunities every chance I can and power the RV with 500 watts of solar and approximately 500 amp hours of batteries. RV Resorts are just not our style!

Very interesting to see all the smog stuff in there... I had never seen it before. My step dad was a long haul trucker, had his own trucks .. When I was young and small he would have me help him when he worked on the trucks so I actually can recognize many of the parts as you were talking about them. BUT he never had to deal with any of the smog stuff. Know when it is all back together it will be easier to work on and run great!!

you got this Dave. I removed all of the smog stuff as well as the A/C compressor as mine didn't work. i use the rooftop air with the generator running and it works just fine. All i have now is power steering pump , alternator and water pump all very easy to get to and change if need be.. i know you will but a thermostat change would be a great idea right now while all the antifreeze is gone.. Looks like a great spot you all are in enjoy your time with friends : ) Give Bella hugs have a great weekend...

Hi @frankavery8306 I need to replace my radiator on my 454 coach and I as well have been thinking about getting rid of the smog and ac, when I do, what should i do with those air hoses that eventually end up going into a manifold or something? do i just cap them off? thanks in advance for any advice you can send my way.

Hey Dave What's going on man Great to know you can fix this But I have to say when you start diving into a motor that's old like this its best to do everything At once that way you have it all done because when you start replacing one part here one part their it will all fall apart fast I'd do it all at once starter Alternator etc and so forth

When I used to do maintenance work at The Y.M.C.A here in Asheboro. They had a Bus with a 454 Chevrolet Engine in it. I am not really a Chevrolet Guy, but that Old Bus would get down the road pretty good after it got warmed up. It had a Straight Choke with a throttle on it. It was kinda Cold Natured, but once it got warmed up, it would get down the Road pretty good.

Smog pump pushes fresh air to mix with exhaust gases to help with emissions.Charcal canister catches fumes.Another valve opens at times and the fumes the canister caught runs up into the carb to get burned. There is more to it but that's the basic part.

I’m guessing that the funky brackets were maybe for a dual alternator setup. Gm started using RPO codes in 1970, but there’s a chance that the rv fitter killed the label. RPO codes would tell you as I’m sure you know. Looks like that rig had a shade tree mechanic or two. Good luck 👍

I’m one of those people who have no business touching anything under the hood. Looks like to me the brackets you were showing at 18:07 were brackets that suported the air compresser . They always over braced them because they had a hell of a surge when you kicked on the air. I had a 1984 bronco that was covered in vacume hoses. The early eightes was excperment time for smog control. Didnt take long for all the plastic and rubber hoses to dry out and crack. Then your vehicle would run like shit.
