Replacing Vacuum Hoses [AMC Eagle]

The vacuum hoses I bought are as follows:
7/64" hose: amzn.to/2IQlakq
5/32" hose: amzn.to/2ITlb7a
7/32" hose: amzn.to/3lODVmT
So in this AMC Eagle project video, I give you an quick update on the progress of the car. I had a friend replace the rusty gas tank, rusty brake lines, and rusty fuel lines. He also replaced the rear brake shoes & wheel cylinders.
I recently replaced nearly all of the vacuum lines under the hood. There are so many emission hoses and lines it's crazy. I chose to buy 50' spools of the tubing, and I got the sizes 7/64", 5/32", and 7/32". The ones I got were from Gates, part numbers 27041, 27042, and 27043. Truth be told I could have got away with buying bulk quantities but I didn't know how much I'd need so I bought a roll so I wouldn't have to overpay for shorter lengths plus I have lots for future project vehicles.
I still have to replace the brake master cylinder and bleed the brakes, flushing the fluid. After that I need to rebuild the carburetor (Carter BBD feedback) and it will be (more) ready for winter!

Those were the days of controlled ciaos under the hood. The Eagle is certainly a one of a kind type of automobile. I remember them like it was yesterday.

Yep. I haven’t had a single issue with vacuum lines since replacing them. Although I think I have an issue with the choke.

@@InternetDude If you have not already I would pull the carb, take you time and rebuild it. Not sure how long those electric chokes worked for, might be the issue and you should be able to find a replacement for it. I guess the next question is what is the symptom?

I rebuilt the carb 2 years ago and it ran flawlessly. Then a year later it was giving cold startup / choke type problems. Won’t go on fast idle and poor running until warmed up. I think I will pull the carb again and check settings. I already replaced the choke thermostat again and it’s a little better but not great.

@@InternetDude Well fast idle would be controlled by the choke spring (electric) and the stepped design. The two aforementioned either work or do not. There were two carbs that I have found that were used with the Eagle, Carter or the Motorcraft. Do you know which one you have? Have you tried spraying carb cleaner around the pivots on the carb to check for air leaks, (gaskets, throttle pivots, intake manifold, other) Your to lean at a cold start up which I know you know. Maybe do a video at cold startup and show all the carb settings as the pedal was depressed once. Maybe swap the carb from the donor car if you still have it and see if things change. Could be jets emulsion tubes are clogged slightly from tank/line debris as this is an older automobile? Just some thoughts.

I didn't watch the video as it doesn't apply to me at all. I stopped by to thank you for your Tesla videos. They played a huge part in my thinking on purchasing a Tesla. On the 30th, a Tesla 3 Long Range was delivered to my residence followed by an email notifying me. I went ahead with the purchase in great part cause I was just sick to death over the angst created about purchasing a Tesla. It appeared to me that many issues had been addressed and it was time to buy. Haven't found any negative issues whatsoever. Panel alignment, paint quality, inside panels, nothing found and all is good. The car is an absolute trip to drive. I feel a sense of freedom with this car that's pretty enchanting. They even gave me 3 months FSD trial and a year of free supercharging. Big Thank You!!!

From what I've learned, AMC was a pretty cool brand that had some soul to it, even though it was a little behind on their powertrain technology. Never had a chance to see one in person though, here in Ukraine nobody even knows that cars like these ever existed. But I guess it's pretty cool to own a piece of history, especially one that's related to a pretty interesting, long gone company.

Yep. They didn't have enough budget though to really excel IMHO. If only they had kept going with Eagle the 4WD wagon when Chrysler bought them in 87/88 they probably could have owned the crossover market.

Here in rural Texas there are no smog inspections and cars over 25 years old it is legal to modify the emissions systems. I would rip all those hoses out of there and put a new aftermarket carb on there.

I rebuilt the carb and it nearly runs like new. It took a lot of hours though trying to figure it all out and get it working right. It would have been less time but more money to just put a new carb on. I'm trying to go as close to factory as possible (within reason).

Aw man, finally a respite from the lack of Canadian Prairies car-related content (SPPTV has gone quiet lately). Looks like an Astro Pneumatic rechargeable light like what Eric O at SMA uses? And studded tires on the hooptie, nice! That AMC engine, is it shared with any of the Jeep models? Any thought to doing a fuel injection conversion or retrofit?
@InternetDude
@InternetDude 3 жыл бұрын
Yep, the same light as Eric, it's awesome! The engine is identical to the Jeep motor as far as I know (258). The plan is to rebuild the carb now because if it is running like new there's really no need to put fuel injection on it. If it was my daily driver I would probably consider fuel injection but it's costly to buy relative to the cost of the car itself! The biggest problem is the choke thermostat doesn't work, it's stuck. So if I can fix that and rebuild the carb I think it will be running like new for under $50. It has no high idle right now so you have to sit and rev the engine while warming up.

Hi there, Great Video you did years ago. I have been working on 83 AMC Eagle SX/4, and talk about vacuum lines, WOW. But I was hoping you would have talked about the Front Transmission Hookup. All line are disconnected below and some hookup locations have been severed off the confections below. love to talk. thank you in advance. Ed

I'm not sure what you are referring to when you say the front transmission hookup lines?

whoa boy... just a weeee bit.....Thinking about trying to go with that Fuel Injection retrofit?( those CARB like EFI things) make it more drivable?

If I daily drove this year round I would do that for sure. The cost is quite expensive for a fun cruiser car. I rebuilt the carb and it definitely runs a lot better.

Check the label on your firewall as each year can be slightly different and also depends on features options.

Many cars are different even the same year, due to regional differences. Check your firewall sticker for the most accurate version for you.

Was it Ford, once they got fuel injected perfected, carburetors were really old fashioned? Man, imagine if AMC had big wallets like Ford or GM - I can't imagine what they'd look like today!
@InternetDude
@InternetDude 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah AMC didn't have the budget they needed, for sure. Blame Chrysler for buying out AMC and then destroying them though. Chrysler did do well with the Jeep brand after they bought it, however. Jeep got fuel injection I thinking in 1987 the year after my Eagle was produced. I do think AMC could have done well if they didn't kill off the Eagle, the Eagle was a crossover before the term was invented. Many new vehicles today are basically Eagles but taller. And uglier ;-)
