Decided to have some fun with the structure of the video as a bit of an April Fools Look while we talk about Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dreaming Girl's use of time travel, both it's structural set-up and how the impacts its conflict and character dynamics, and also looking at how the timelines themselves impact those concepts.
Day #3 of the blitz is done so we're over the hump! Special Thanks to @ian_nguyen29 for the submission on this one, it was my first time watching the film so that was a special kind of fun.

I loved how completely meta this video was. Talking about a film almost entirely shown as forgotten timelines, using the naming scheme of the original series to show a less structured format than we're used to, ending the episode on how most are begun. All of this on the day of the year most known for pranks. This is why you're my favorite analysis youtuber to watch. Keep up the good work, dude!

You got me interested in watching Bunny Girl Senpai with the time loop video, didn't get around to watching it for a while. Then I saw you post this one, and decided to watch the show so I could watch this. Then, after I finished the show in a single day, I started watching this, only to learn that it's about a film that I didn't know was a thing. I watched the film, today. Mai's death was as shocking as Mayuri's was. That doesn't happen often. I loved it~ Thanks for being the sole inspiration and motivation for me to experience this series~

Re the safe ending: Having read the light novel, it's a much more coherent and satisfying ending than the source material, which kind of just handwaves away the stakes but also may be suggesting that Shoko bootstrapped herself into godhood and/or Sakuta is hallucinating. Though I remain disappointed that they didn't pay off the setup of Kamisato telling him to die repeatedly in the show - once he knows about December 24, he actually has a response for her: "That's the plan."

Oh ho, I see what you did there. Clever. I recently watched this movie so it's still pretty fresh in my mind. Mai's death was incredibly heartbreaking. But it irked me how safe the ending was. I'm not against a happy ending, but I wish we could have had scenes to show how things still turned out the same without Shouko's interference. I do think the solution of how Shouko was saved was pretty clever though.

@underrated2064
@underrated2064 4 жыл бұрын
Similar concept I would say but i think steins gate is more superior in the way it’s told and executed. While both are amazing I believe steins gate has the edge. It’s almost comparable to another series like re:zero a bit. The way that suffering is portrayed and how subaru looks for every possible outcome that’s the best for him and everyone around him. These 3 series have a very similar concept.

Great stuff~ I watched the movie in cinema and I highly enjoyed it & actually liked it more than the original show, but.. in restrospective, I would value it even more without that final scene at the beach. As you stated - it was a full-blown happy ending, which would've been fine by itself.. but that last revelation just felt a tad unnecessary overall with all of them actually remembering everything. Sometimes it's better to leave a little bit of mistery left unanswered. Geez, even just a "show - don't tell" approach with only having the viewer know that it's her would have been fine, too.
@default632
@default632 3 жыл бұрын
That'd be fucking cruel to my heart. And I'd love it. Yes. There should have been at least 5 minute of new future without them arriving to happy ending directly. A mini plot for them to remember. Like how "guarantee" verb/noun was needed for Mai.
@Toporshik

I actually was unable to emotionally connect with the movie, and felt a bit disappointed with it compared to the show. But your analysis made me rethink my approach to it. I still think that it would benefit from a longer time for this timeline, exploring the concept of inevitability of December 24th and the ways characters try to cope with it. But it all makes much more sense now

Endless comment incoming I love Hajime Kamoshida's (Sakurasou's Girlfriend, Bunny Senpai) writing style so what I'm gonna say it's pretty biased. Having said that, Dream Girl was incredible disappointing to me because of its ending, like you said, by being way too soft on the characters and how it should have affected their lives in their rebooted universe BUT, even though I hated the end result, I think the really important aspect to focus on is how wonderfully the relationships between characters are build. In 2:18 you say the third timeline feels hollow because the choice of leaving Shouko to die is not one Sakuta nor Mai would choose, but I think that's precisely why it's interesting, it's a horrible choice to take and a hard one for any pair of teens, especially for Sakuta, because of all what Shouko means to him. It's there where the quality of the dialogues and relationships between characters really shine. I love the foreshadowing in the series of Mai saying she loves Sakuta more than he (and the audience) think and the movie shows it, not only by saving Sakuta from the car, which is pretty obvious, but by her being willing to abandon the career she loves (and potentially her Adolescent Syndrome coming back because of that), leaving her own house and her sister just to save him, but by being aware of the fact that, even though Sakuta came back from the future, Mai was convinced (and right) Sakuta would still choose to die to save Shouko. I adore all the moments of weakness when Sakuta is just a teen who is deeply in love with his girlfriend, when he plain says to Shouko that he can't do it, he can't sacrifice his future with Mai just to save her. When he loses all motivation to live when Mai is no longer there it's the slap in his face he needed to feel to ask himself about what could do to his happy life if he continues to think about others well-being first. I think that's what the author really wanted us to see. The happy ending it's too much for me, and I think the movie should have ended with either Sakuta returning to save Mai and both of them having to come to terms with the fact of Shouko's death, or at least, a rebooted world where it's not as easy to just reconnect with all of his friends in a world where he needed to help his little sister bullying-victim fase without Shouko's existence. Even if Kamoshida felt the absolute need of having a happy ending, I think it would have been a good thing the characters having their memories of the other possible futures, Sakuta knowing how a world without Mai is and if he is willing to continue helping people knowing what could happen to his loved ones.

Imma just say this: Just go with it. 😎😎 On the other hand, it's kind of implied that the events of the series still happen, minus the shouko stuff. So Mai and Sakuta still meet in the same way apparently. All the events happen still, except Sakuta's own Adolescent Syndrome. So in that regard, instead of almost losing it and having Shouko save him, it may be safe to imply that Sakuta kept it together for the sake of Kaede. It's just a guess however. Only way to know is to read that LN volume and see what the author did.

Shoko resets the timeline from the beginning. Yet somehow everyone ends up the same. But we never see the anime itself in the new timeline. The anime both happens, and doesnt. From our perspective, We see the old timeline anime, Then the outcome of the new timeline. We can only connect the old timeline plot to the new timeline. Which means the entire thing is another Schrodinger's cat paradox. The anime Both happens and doesnt happen. We never see how it played out in the new timeline. Just the outcome of it.

I loved the movie but I found a little disappointing because undermined so much the anime series. To me the core of the series is that Sakuta got the reassurance of Shoko of that Horizonte beyond, and that his days should be spent being a kindlier person. If that's not how Sakuta became the person he is, it implies that meeting Shoko wasn't important. Like or the series lied to me or the Movie and nothing really maters. Probably the movie got it wrong, and the path should be Shoko delivers the speech to Mai, Mai by chance or something inspires Sakuta and everybody get the happy end. That way the thesis of the movie would be "being kind reaches to people in one or another way". And then at the end "remember" their past lives or something. Neat video. Thank you for making it.

I feel this is heavily misinterpreting things. After all, Shoko was *first* inspired by Sakuta *before* she inspired him. Which meant Sakuta would have realized the important things she told her on his own, otherwise she wouldn't have been inspired by him. The movie would make even less sense if some how not meeting Shoko changed things when Shoko only went back because Sakuta had inspired and saved her.

to be frank the ending of the movie doesn't make sense, i mean a lot of the stories we know happen because sakuta met shouko, but the one thing that really clicked is the pussying off killing shouko jesus before this arc kaeda the one cute imouto we know was killed damn it, well personality wise.

Wasn't there a line at the end between Mai and Sakuta that reaffirmed that the events of the first season actually did happen, or did that all get erased too?

If you pay attention, Kaede's memories never came back. At the end of the movie, she mentions that she is practicing to go to school again, just she did back in the anime before her memory came back, although this Kaede is more... a mix between the old two. Maybe that's why the foreshadowing of a possible season 2 plot?

I believe when we are shown "current year" again, it goes back to the summer, before Kaede got her memories back, where as the movie started around Christmas time. So Kaede should get her memories back around the same time as normal.

Why do you speak without knowing the facts? You just need to do a quick research on Wikipedia, but I'll explain for you... First of all, Seishun is an anime adapting the night novel with the same name of course, so it's like most anime series that adapt mangas/light novels, take for example attack on titan, death note or sword art online, they all adapt a manga/light novel. This means that if there has to be a season 2, in most cases it will happen because there are new manga/light novel volumes/chapters to adapt (I say most of the time because some times anime companies make new seasons/special episodes that are not Canon with the original manga/light novel). So seishun IT'S NOT an original production, animes like Code Geass of Darling in the franxx are an original production and are not a manga/light novel adaption. So by NOT being one, if a season 2 of seishun will happen, it's because there are more light novel volumes to adapt. So, are there? Basically, the 13 anime episodes adapted from volume 1 to 5 in the light novel, while the movie adapted volume 6 and 7. Currently there are still 3 volumes not animated and they are the volumes 8, 9 and 10. Now, volumes are still coming out, so the serie is still ongoing, but still, the volumes come out pretty slowly, the author is in fact slow, but volume 10 got released February 10th 2020, the plot is still not over and volumes may release faster thanks to the anime being famous. A season 2 won't happen soon however, because these 3 volumes have not enough contents for a new season, but once 2-3 more volumes come out, I'm sure we are going to get a season 2

Yuna Hito season 2 hasn’t been announced, I don’t doubt that there will be one seeing as how popular both the anime and light novel are but realistically don’t expect another season until the light novel ends or until vol 11 or 12 is out. Also the author confirmed its going to end at vol 13 so the earliest a season 2 could drop would be after vol 11 if they’re planning on doing another movie for the last two volumes again
