Sunn Hemp is a great warm-season cover crop for depleted or over-farmed soils. It provides ground cover, reduces erosion, adds organic matter and nitrogen to garden soils.

The sun hemp from Hoss survived the drought we had this summer. Thankful!

When you plant your fall sweet corn, under sow the corn with Berseem clover. It will slowly establish in the understory of the corn also fixing nitrogen, then once the corn is finished the clover will come up fast and strong, untill you terminate it for cool weather crops, or the frost kills it. That way you establish a cover crop and your corn at the same time. The corn out compeats the Berseem with ease, then the Berseem stagnates in the shade untill the corn is finished.

Thank you Hoss seeds for my sunn hemp cover crop seeds I just purchased. 3 days I had germination following sweet corn. I mixed cowpeas and soybeans with the sunn hemp, can't wait to see it thick as a jungle!

the no till method is definitely the way to go, keep the organic matter in the soil. I want to do something like this with some other varieties here in the southeast, ill do the same and tarp it and plant over the previous crop. cover crop rotation is definitley the best way to go

my sunn hemp got really tall... and I never saw a flower... I finally just mowed it down and then tilled it in the next day. But yes it germinated really fast... in 48 hours I had a full stand. I just planted another section where my okra was with it. Didn't realize I could already be planting mustard... but I'm probably going to follow the hemp with mustard at least once if not twice before the spring... I want that spot to be really ready, and hopefully nematode free (or close to it). I want to grow a really nice stand of okra for a change.

You should have some awesome soil after all that cover cropping!

I terminated my cover crop with the sweeps on my wheel hoe. Cut the plant off just beneath the surface and left the roots in the ground; which is the most important thing. Roots are really what give your soil the organic matter it needs.
@gardeningwithhoss
@gardeningwithhoss 5 жыл бұрын
Never thought of using the sweeps to do it, but we're definitely going to try to keep the roots in tact through the tarping process.

Hoss Tools You’ve forced me into a shameless plug. Here’s a link to the video I made about that: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/as5jY8icqN3cnmQ.html It’s only in the first five minutes. I had mowed the crop down first and bagged the clippings and put them in the compost pile. It doesn’t look like it in the video, but the sweeps were cutting out the crop almost like sod. It made clean up pretty easy (though a garden rake would have made clean up MUCH faster). It left a clean, level seed bed too!

Does sunn hemp regrow once cut? And how long should i wait before planting stuff in to the garden beds after tilling the hemp all in?
@gardeningwithhoss
@gardeningwithhoss 2 жыл бұрын
If cut shorter than 12 inches it will not. When stalks degrade enough, you can till in and plant.

I have sandy soil , will this work. And then after it grows , you said to mow it down, do I tiller it in the grow, then plant what I am going to plant. I have a little garden, about 150 ft. long by 60 ft. wide, some of the plants will come up , BUT there is more grass then plants.OR do you have something to get read of the grass.
@gardeningwithhoss
@gardeningwithhoss 5 жыл бұрын
If you have so much grass that it's hard to grow a garden, you might consider tarping the area to get rid of the grass first. Then plant a cover crop.

What inoculant does it require ? I like a buffet so want to interplant with cowpeas, flax, mung beans. Ideas.i have a fair bit of tilled in wood chips I'm in Arizona, poor poor dirt when I started.
