pro tip: smear wax to fill in all the gaps around the flange, up to the floor, so that if it ever leaks in the future, it won't leak into the floor. It will only show up on the floor around your toilet. That way, your floor won't rot out before you know it's leaking :P
@rezanyc4 ай бұрын
Can you use silicone around it instead?
@imjustapersonhi4 ай бұрын
@@rezanyc I wouldn't recommend using silicone, as it is much more difficult to work with and harder to get a complete seal around the flange. That, and you would have to let it cure before setting the toilet.

You do good work and have great videos. One bit of advice…. Never use silicone on any flange extensions. No matter if the manufacturer recommends it or not. I’ve been in the business over 35 yrs and use to use silicone… about 25yrs ago one failed and when I took it apart I saw the silicone doesn’t stick to any waxed surface even after cleaning it and wiping it with denatured alcohol. It doesn’t bond well with the extension either. When the screws are installed they create waves and the high spots create voids. I use another sealant but, putting a 1/4” - 3/8” layer of wax from a wax ring will bond to everything and won’t leave separate from the voids. The manufacturer isn’t the one who’s going to go out to redo the job if it fails. It would probably only leak if the drain line clogs and backs up. Not criticizing, just trying to be helpful.
@themanwiththeplan128Ай бұрын
I ran into this issue to with silicone sometimes but I started sanding the flange with some mesh cleaning cloth after cleaning and using a rubberized adhesive I found that it hold strong and bond to the old flange better but I’m tending to move away from from wax style seals because the area I’m in is hot and sometimes the waxes melt in the back of my truck and make a huge mess of things

I have found that using silicone over the wax residue will almost certainly fail. Cut a wax ring to 1/2 thickness and use that instead. Also, the wax rings with the plastic horn will usually cause a leak if used where the collar sits flush or above the floor. Master Plumber for 33 years.

Haven't worked with wax rings, or any "proper" plumbing, but I've dismantled/maintained/put together my fair share of Blake marine toilets. They've been made for 80 years, if not more, entirely handmade in England, with only English parts, and priced accordingly, a new Victory (their top model) costs over ten grand, so them being called "the Rolls-Royce of marine toilets" makes sense both in quality and cost. But by god are they amazing to both use and work on, basically foolproof! All the hardware is metal, the pan porcelain, with seals and gaskets made out of rubber and leather (yes really). Spare kits of all the seals and gaskets are like 400 bucks, and you can buy just about part separately, even the porcelain pan. Not everything new is better, and maybe wax rings are one of those things.

Been using Sani Seal for about 10 years now. Never had a leak or call back. They surprised me when a toilet, at an extremely overweight customer's house, was loose, every time i was there for something. I eventually had to use Marine Grade Silicone Adhesive, to hold toilet to the floor. But, even with toilet moving an inch or so, the Sani Seal never leaked. One more advantage, is at gas stations I service. If I have to pull a toilet to rod, I can re use Sani Seal. I do replace them every 3 to 4 times, or 6 months, if toilet is removed often. I've tired Korky and Fluid master wax less, but don't think they're as good as the green Sani Seals. A quick note... They redesigned them a year or 2 ago. Originally had a 2 inch flap, that folded into flange, or allowed you to stack 2 gaskets if needed. Probably tried saving a few cents during manufacturing. They sill work great, but I liked them more, before they omitted the flap. Wax seals are great, under perfect conditions, but how often do you find a flange in perfect shape.
