Imran Hosein is appealing to reverts like me, at first. I mean, he has the 'sheik' title for a start and speaks about the 'exciting' parts of the Deen, yaum al-qiyama..I was always into eschatology, so naturally even before I reverted to Islam ( alhamdulullah ), Imran Hosein was the be-all and end-all as far as Islamic scholars went..Then little things started nagging me, from his bad Arabic pronunciation to his interpretations-ta'weel?. Unlike most fanboys, I looked up the hadeeths Imran uses for his interpretations, and found the guy seriously over-stepping his authority. My knowledge on things Islamic is nowhere near most others, I'm not making takfir on the guy, I'm not qualified to point out links to sufism or his brotherhood with the Shi'a, but if his interpretations and certainties don't jibe and his interpretations are not based on Sahih hadeeth, then I got wary..I learnt my lesson the hard way and if I could only give one piece of advice to my fellow reverts: be careful where you learn your Deen and who you learn it from.. Back in the days of jahilia, I'd look up to rock stars or other celebrities, now it's brothers like Sheik Asrar Rashid. This brother is a wealth of knowledge, it would be a humbling experience to meet him someday, insha'Allah.
