Shocked at how much difference even a little denser soil makes to those roots. I planted my ZZ raven in a bark/soil/perlite mix but after seeing this i'm thinking it would thrive much better in a more airy mix. Thanks for these informative videos, your channel is one of my favorites for plant info🌿🙌

Thank you, new subscriber! After watching discovered my ZZ has some root die off in the original nursery pot mix. I was so careful not to over water it too :( I feel more confident now on what to repot it in. The two ZZ's look very nice in the new pot you chose, you arranged them perfectly.

Tyler, since there are so many varieties of orchid mixes, is this a correct soil combination for a zz plant: 1 part sphagnum moss, 1 part charcoal, 4 parts medium sized orchid bark, 2 parts perlite?

I don't know what an orchid mix is, but I have a regular Plagron potting mix and some wood chips, and also perlite, as well as worm cast. Would that work? Guess I'd have to put a lot of wood chips.

I always placed small rocks on the very bottom of my pots to help with drainage and prevent mold, do you suggest I do that with the ZZ? Is there an alternative to bark? I hate to buy a big bag. Thanks!

I almost killed my raven zz. I think the pot was just too deep and the bottom inch never dried even though I only watered like once a month. There was like an inch of mold at the bottom and the zz was not having it!! Lol she’s bouncing back.

Good to hear!! I noticed a huge positive difference when I used a bark based mix!
