This video shows the repotting of a large, half a metre wide Escallonia that I styled last Autumn.
It's a slightly different repot to normal as the main purpose is to remove the heavy, wet clay ground-soil that is at the centre of the rootball, something that I see all too often on bonsai despite it causing problems with the health of the tree, lack of vigour and rotting wood.
Please note that it is not safe to remove more than a 1/3 of the soil if you are repotting a coniferous tree species such as Pine, Juniper and Spruce.

Removing old ground soil from a bonsai is precisely a focus of mine, as of late. I have this 57 year old Wisteria I'd collected from a soon after demolished mansion, early last fall. The base is around 10-11 inches wide, and similarly was grown in clay like soil. Wisteria grows like a weed here, so I feel I'll allow it till spring 2021 till I preform this action. Great video again man! I'll be rewatching when I repot

Joe Quiggle thanks man! Sure, keeping some ground soil immediately after collection can be very useful for recovery, but in another 1-2 years it really needs removing. Particularly as wisteria are prone to rotting

@@bonsai4me2 Right again, man! This wisteria in particular has hollowed completely, with holes revealing the deadwood and character. I'll tag you in a picture of it on Instagram. I truly got lucky in acquiring it.😎

Nice work... I was surprised by the size of pumice you used to fill the cavity under the trunk... but then adding Akadama made sense of the whole process...
@bonsai4me2
@bonsai4me2 4 жыл бұрын
Leszek Rybak yes, the akadama and remaining soil will have made their way into the pumice, which in itself is a great soil

Beautiful! could you comment about moler and wooden grow box? Thank you for sharing.

Paolo Mh tbh I’m not using either at the moment so difficult to video. But molar works wonders, as do wooden boxes. The molar I was using became too small a grain so I stopped using it, and I prefer to use old bread crates and half-pots as they are more uniform and lighter. I also don’t have problems with extremes of heat and cold here in the uk, one of the big advantages of using wooden boxes.

Horrible this “sticky “ magma like bad quality substrate, pain in the heart ♥️ wen we remove it, so aggressive for the thin roots... greater as usual. Congratulations 🙏

Thanks Harry for your videos, you mentioned that its good to leave some soil around coniferous trees, when repotting my pines I practice that,and the white miceum, so is myceum beneficial to all my trees?eg would it be good too harvest a wee bit and mix it into other trees soil as I repot this spring?
@bonsai4me2
@bonsai4me2 4 жыл бұрын
Paul Ballantine mycelium is species-specific so soil from a pine will only be of use to another pine and so on. But ‘old’ soil from any tree will contain a huge amount of beneficial bacterial and mycelium, whether you can see it or not

Harry recently purchased an Itiogawa Juniper (13" tall) and it looks as if it still has the original clay soil, would this time of the year be right to partially remove the clay? Another stunning tree to worked on👍
@bonsai4me2
@bonsai4me2 4 жыл бұрын
Brian Kavanagh I will literally excavate the original clay soil without even removing the tree from the pot, and replace it with a soil that won’t break down. You can safely remove the inner 1/3 of this type of soil of you are not disturbing the outer ring of roots. Avoid using more than say 50% akadama as this will also break down over time.

is that soil mix used on a lot of your trees or just spacific trees
@bonsai4me2

Arc Turus I use the large grain pumice in mixes for coniferous species and a few deciduous trees that require a fast draining soil, particularly newly collected blackthorn and hawthorn. But not for refined deciduous trees that require a smaller grain for better ramification.

Michael Hudson only as a surface dressing, I still very firmly believe that using (pure) akadama on some trees is the kiss of death
