Love the curly begonias so much! The right size pot is key. I put my tie dye into a too big pot, now I have to make sure I don’t over water each time. I might pot down soon.

Beautiful begonias! They have become so popular now as houseplants! So many varieties. I am trying to give them enough humidity just like my orchids but very difficult in the Southern California desert!

I love to add a product called soil moist to my party mix. Not everyone sells it a lot of gardening centers do I know Lowe's here in the United States sells it but Home Depot doesn't. I love these crystals because they absorb 50 times their weight in water which helps keep the soil from drying out too much if you have hanging baskets and potted plants outside or houseplants maybe in a sunny window. The crystals swell up with the water and keep it in reserve for when the plant needs it. I also think it helps keep from overwatering because the soil doesn't get soggy the crystals hold the soil the moisture not the soil when there is excess. If I forget and use it twice and a pot from one summer to the next it doesn't do any harm the only way I find out that happened is sometimes after a heavy rain it looks as if I'm growing clear chunks of Jell-O in the pot. I've never used too much and made my soil soggy. I've been using it for years. I get a lot of coleus cuttings in the spring because I keep coming back to coleus I buy or the ones I've been able to overwinter so I can expand my collection to plant outside in the shade. It's hard sometimes to get water routes to adjust to soil but when I add soil moist crystals to the potting mix I never have any trouble. The coleus get almost two feet high by the end of the summer and at least a foot in diameter. After the frost hits the roots when I take the dead plants out of the soil and my pots have little chunks of clear Jello like crystals clinging to the roots if the soil still moist. The other thing I think it helps immensely with my plants is the expansion and contraction of the crystals helps to keep the soil from getting compacted and helps I believe aerating the soil. It makes it easier for the roots to grow through the potting mix so it does the work probably that earthworms do in the ground. I also use it in the ground when I plant impatiens and a lot of my other annuals that don't like to dry out. The crystals keep the moisture around the roots instead of letting the rain or the watering that we do get away from the root system. I think it's the best invention ever are Gardens indoor plants. Take care I was just wondering what part of Ireland you are living in. I had a chance to visit relatives and Northern Ireland in Londonderry or some people call it Derry. I use my microphone on the keyboard on my cell phone to dictate this comment too so it could post I'm not good at using my thumbs or my fingers to type on my cell phone. So I hope I edited out any words that didn't print right take care my Garden friend

Here in Tampa with our climate perlite is one of my biggest expenses with potting media. That's a very lovely begonia, I have a couple friends a bit north of me that hybridize begonias and similar plants.

Is it OK to separate the tubers of a begonia? There were a lot of smaller new growth leaves stuck in the stems of the bigger leaves so I separated some of the tubers out from the main clump and spread them out in my new pot.
@GardeningatDouentza

You can remove tubers, just make sure each piece has at least one growth point where leaves come out.

Hello Rachel, I sent you a shout out some time ago on a orchid cactus that was gifted to me by a gentleman that lost his wife. He figures it to be very old. You gave me some care instructions on it and happy to let you know it is full of blooms. I would love to grow this for Josh but not sure how to do it. I do not have Facebook, Twitter or instagram. Thank you for your channel and your growing tips. And let me know how I can add this beautiful plant to #growitforjosh. Thank you

Here in Maryland you can find these begonias in Lowe's Home Depot Walmart and gardening centers and nurseries. They don't have the necessarily the one or the ones she's working with but they have rex or other begonias

Dear Rachel, my begonia has some coper coloured leaves that did not have before (copper spotting) I removed them thinking they were old but it has it also on the new leaves ) what shall I do? I am thinking this is some kind of problem.

Hello Rachel. A couple of my rex begonias dealt with the lower humidity over the past month or so rather poorly (which may have been exacerbated by my overcompensating with watering when I noticed the problem) and have thrown all of their leaves off in protest. Some of them still have plump, albeit leafless, tubers. Is there a chance they'll put out more leaves in the near future? Is there anything I can do to help them?
@GardeningatDouentza
@GardeningatDouentza 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Taylor. You describe a problem that I don't need to deal with here in Ireland. I would imagine the tubers will send out new roots if you peg them to the soil and keep humidity up, perhaps with a humidity tray.
