This is my first winter with bonsai. I lost two of my junipers. I dk why probly should've dug it in the ground. The good thing is my decidious trees made it and now are starting to grow buds.

Just a brief reminder to all bonsai artists, novice to pro: Peter has a very fascinating video which focuses on bonsai substrate. The title of the video is "Bonsai Soil Mix" and was uploaded a few years ago. I found the discussion and demonstration very interesting and helpful.

I wasn't sure about your removing those crossing roots since it seemed that was the whole aesthetic of the tree, but it certainly revealed beautiful areas of root structure underneath. How you see that, what's behind and under the outer layers of the tree, is beyond me.

Thank you... 🙏 😔 🙏 Dr. Chan, all the knowledge and information and experience you have and eagerly share is a blessing and inspiration. Many people fear opinions or arguments or criticism, you don't. Thank you for sharing about your COMPOSTED potting soil mixtures. Do you use "totally inert" items in any of your mixtures? What is your opinion, experience with grafting to create Nebari? Will it or should it work? Sorry, I have so many questions, but I am not as bold as my mentor.

Thank you Walter for raising these points - all this helps to improve our videos. Feedback is all important and I learn a lot from our viewers too. So this is very much a two-way process as all education ought to be. The teacher should be prepared to learn from their students. That is how the fund of knowledge expands. Akadama is partly inert but as I am not a soil scientist - I am not 100% sure but the volcanic grit we use could be almost totally inert. As regards grafting roots is concerned, I did touch on this in one of my videos but will do talk and demonstrate it again in greater detail in a future video. OK.

Regrettably it is important to remind consumers that not all akadama is created equal when it comes to lifespan. Freeze/thaw cycles also will break down akadama much faster.

Is there a plan, or is it still possible, to redo the tree's alignment (balance) with the pot? Or is it just maybe me who sees it. The tree has the right bend and should have more space to accommodate the shape on the right side (more soil). Rather than having more space (soil) at the left which leaves it a bit unbalanced as a whole setup. Or is it too late to grow more root mass on the right side and reduce the left side? Just a query. Thanks

@@HeronsBonsaiUK The leaves are still green (now at the end of april) but they are a much darker green than the new ones. It has a lot of new growth so im not worried. Why do you keep calling your bonsai soil compost? There is probably no compost in it.
@peterchan3100
@peterchan3100 Жыл бұрын
In case you dont know - Potting Compost is defined as "a medium in which to grow plants in pots". You may have heard of the John Innes Institute - they were responsible for creating their famous formula composts known as John Innes No.1; No.2 and No.3 which is still use in the horticultural trade..Bonsai compost is a formulated mix of different ingredients,
@Josef_R
@Josef_R Жыл бұрын
@@peterchan3100 I guess it's just another example of the British renaming things that already have names. Compost is decayed matter. Nothing to do with bonsai. Reminds me of how they renamed aluminum (the original name, given by it's discoverer) to aluminium so it would look nice in the periodic table.

@@peterchan3100 Dr. Chan, too bad we don't use Urdu, because we don't have a very good command of the English language. In this case compost is an adjective, not a noun, well really in both cases. Now I'll keep my "political" opinions to myself. I sure know which dog that rock hit though.
