I'm really lazy, I've never bothered with removing the soil in 20 years of gardening unless its the original peat moss that it came in from the nursery and I'm changing it to something completely different. I also don't bother with loosening up or touching the roots either, they can make their own way to the new soil fine, never had a strangled plant. The only time I touch the roots is if I want to limit the size of the plant so it doesn't take over my space or I want to keep it in the same size pot, then I take the scissors and prune usually about a third. I live in an apartment so space is really limited. There's more than one way to look after plants, and you do what works best for you and yours. Ignore these Plant Gestapo. They'd probably have a fit if they knew I reuse all my old potting mixes as well.

You do you! Everyone has opinions and what works for them, doesn't necessarily mean it works for all! You are an expert with YOUR plants! I rarely disrupt the roots. Unless I have a pest infestation, I leave the root ball as is when up-potting.

I find that if I'm repotting a rootbound plant like those, if I soak the bottom of the roots for a minute or so, it softens the roots enough that they are much easier to untangle without too much breakage. Although, if I have one where the roots are really circled and compact at the bottom, I use a really sharp, large knife and just cut the bottom off and then repot. So far, so good.

It's so interesting to see how everyone has different techniques and experiences with their plants. I've personally had rootbound plants go into remission a few months after repotting if I do not loosen up the roots. Upon closer inspection some roots have always found their way into the newer and fresher soil while the ones trapped within the ball continue to decline. Others swear by leaving them be which I find bonkers...but like you said, whatever works!

I wondered if by putting the two plants in one pot, won't that make them root bound awfully quick and have to make you separate them all that quicker? By the way it made a beautiful plant. I liked the idea you say your not an expert and your learn as you got. That's me also. If it wasn't for youtube I'd be lost.

When I repot I loosen some of the roots(if the roots are not those that are very thin) I remove some soil from bottom and some of the top then I just put some fresh soil and backfill. My theory is that in nature plants don’t always have fresh soil lol. You know your plants so you do what you know makes your babies thrive!

I agree get rid of that old soil! Refresh it with new soil which will have lots more nutrients! I also break up the roots a little when really root bound, I think it depends on the plants too. Either way your videos are great and I trust your judgement since your plants always look so happy and healthy!

I need a Hawaiian pothos!! I saw a huge one at my local nursery early in the spring. They had it on a trellis. The stems were as thick as a shovel handle at least!! Humongous leaves as well, definitely sparked some serious plant envy lol

Personally I don’t think removing all the soil from the root ball is necessary 🙂 your plants seem happy so I would just keep doing thing your way!

I did combined my golden pothos . Mine didn't have crazy roots☺️ I let it grow outside whole summer and colors turned great. But I don't really like my indoor plants growing outside, to much cleaning and worrying about pests

Exactly what I did to my heart leaf philodendrons but didn’t bother untangling the roots and seems to be doing fine 😁

It's good to prune the roots. When root pruning it encourages more foliage. Very few people do root pruning anymore. Study up on root pruning.

I have a feeling you will be repotting again pretty soon as how prolific grower pothos are !! Nonetheless, I like the fuller look !

What if I rinse the soil partially off of the root ball and then work the roots loose? I have a huge trailing Pothos that I'm repotting into a 24 inch pot. I repotted it into a 15 inch pot 4 mos ago but it has already outgrown it and is fully root bound.

I don’t like really bushy plants so I always get everything off the roots and root prune once a year. I would not have kept that root ball together and just up pot it. I don’t use peat for my smaller plants. So when I get a plant home I remove all soil and keep it in water for about a week before putting it in a new substrate. Some of my philodendron have finer roots so I may only root prune every two years. Pothos have aggressive roots and the biggest I will go in pot size is maybe an eight inch but I prefer to stay with six inch pots in the house. Except my monstera and fiddle leaf. Jeff a really good read over at HOUZ is about container growing by AL he goes by Tapla on the site. Very interesting stuff. Thanks for the video!! I have quit a few of my plants in my version of AL’s 5:1:1 or gritty mix. He even shares when to do a root pruning that’s best for the plant. I use to do it in spring because that’s the advice so many people gave. You like doing experiments like me so I hope you try one of his substrate suggestions out. Hello! I tried to combine two pothos but they didn’t fit nicely into the bigger pot so I put them back into their pots. Will this kill them? I’m not sure how sensitive they are. I’m so worried now since they were both thriving! One soil was moist and the other almost dry and they got mixed. I ended up watering both plants just a tad. Was this a mistake? If you have any advice it would be great thank you! (:

I have question about terracotta pots. Do you experience any kind of heavy residue on yours ? I don't know what it is, and mostly is on home Depot pots. I make my own mix, maybe to much of something ? I wipe that residue with paper towel soaked with diluted peroxide. Any ideas if that's normal or....?

I only remove most of the soil if it was not my own potting mix the plant was in.

So you go up a size in pot, But ensure that it is gunna be root bound again by putting 2 in the same pot?

What is the best soil for a pythos? I use miracle gro soil anf it dtays so damp my plants start to die 😔

Why is taking off the soil such a big deal? And why would anyone say anything? It's really up to the plant owner. An individual choice. And if it works for you, why should YOU change?? I would think that being rid of all soil will damage the roots more than help... Not saying anything, I'm just sayin'....

You don't have to remove all the soil.

Why would people get after you for not removing enough soil? That's ridiculous. So much root damage happens when cleaning the soil off that much. Yes they recover, but it's totally unnecessary. Loosen the roots a bit, shake off some old soil if you want, and you're good to go!

Way to small of pot for two plants with all those roots.

Woah this pains me. I soak my roots some, use a paint brush to get the wet dirt free and am gentle as possible to save roots. I literally gasped at ripping through with a pencil. Can you post follow ups on what they looked like and If they bounced back? I’m not even hating but like… if this works I’ve been SO careful using so much time 🫣🥹
